Recruiting Football Talk VIII

There were a lot of people on here who called him a great hire for Mizzou as their OC and later at UCF as head coach. He flew completely under the radar for me. I was barely aware of him as a coordinator or coach until his name popped up during our post-Pruitt search.
When Pruitt was hired I was really hoping for Mike Leach, really surprised that we would go after someone like him. I was aware of Heup mostly because of his connection with Leach but I would've never guessed that UT would hire him. To me it was a huge shock and very unUT-like.

You can thank Phil Fulmer for that hire. Wasn't one of his best moments in the end.

So Sampson needs 8 TDs to hit 38 for his career (1st all-time), 2 TDs to hit 19 for the season (1st all-time).

vs Kentucky (12th in SEC in rushing TDs allowed)
vs Miss State (16th in SEC in rushing TDs allowed)
at Georgia (6th in SEC in rushing TDs allowed)
vs UTEP (gives up 2.1 a game, same as Miss State)
at Vandy (11th in SEC in rushing TDs allowed)

I think he's got a damn good shot, I believe he'll have surpassed 18 before going to Athens.

And Sampson runs in a different offense.

Travis Henry was a bad man.
- 4,000 Yds & 40 TDs as a Sr in Florida
- 3,000 Yds at Tennessee
- 3 seasons of 1200+ Yds in NFL (6k total)

Cheese would do absolute damage in this offense, too.

- Zero Condoms used

The whole Pruitt "scandal" was really about Fulmer. He really ticked off some big time boosters when he extended his own contract. The original deal was for him to serve out his contract then retire. Pruitt being fired had a lot less to do with what he did , on or off the field, compared to the desire to axe Fulmer.

It is pretty astonishing. Nobody would have guessed that he would turn himself into a first round pick.

Sincerely doubt Sampson ends up a first rounder.

Second for sure. But not a first rounder. And that isn’t a slight on the player as much as an indictment on how devalued that position is in the league these days.

The young man from Boise State is only RB I have viewed predicted in 1st round.

Sampson could slip in to a team like the Chiefs near the end of 1st round though.

If we make the SECCG and playoff, or just go deep in the playoff, there's a chance Sampson could set the single-season SEC rushing TD record. Derrick Henry had 28 in 2015. But he only had 12 through his first 7 games.

Sampson even has more through his first 7 games than Henry had during his last 8 of 2015, which is when he really started pouring it on. Henry had 16 through those last 8 games.

The top running backs still go in the first round most years. I don't think one was chosen in the first round this year but it happens. I know Alabama, Georgia, and LSU had backs go in the first round in the last ten years.

Since 2013, only 12 have gone in the first round. So about 1 a year.

Jeanty has a good shot.

And while they might not statistically match Sampson, guys like Omarion Hampton and or Ollie Gordon or the kid at Miami might get higher draft grades than Sampson.

Don’t get me wrong - I’d love for Sampson to go round one. I just don’t se it.

Jalen Hurd switched positions to WR and ended up being an All-Conference player in the Big 12 and got drafted in the 3rd round. He's as talented as anyone to ever come through the University of Tennessee. If he played on a team that had an even halfway decent offensive line he would have been a clone of Eddie George.
Funny how I’ve not heard anything about Hurd in the NFL.
They must not realize what a talent he is!!
Meanwhile, Everyone knows who Kamara is!
Kamara was twice the talent of Hurd, Lyle was to stupid to see it.

I’ve figured out who Dobbs 4 Hiesman is!!
How you been doing Butch

Now they have to prepare for a qb they don't have film on. Hopefully they have a talented young guy
I seem to recall (but am not sure) that the backup was forced to play in relief of DinkyWick's son-in-law during last week's game. But still. I read last night that Mizzou's leading rusher is out, too, but that the guy RB is playing well.

You would think that after publicity and fanfare about a secret visit of a committed player ended up alerting the other team to pressure the player to nix his visit in the Carnell Tate case (whether he was serious or day tripping), starting a lot of publicity about such a visit would be the last thing one would do. I didn't understand this from the get go.

I would say there's always a shot...

2023 draft Bijan Robinson went 8th and Jahmyr Gibbs went 12th. But neither has really justified their draft spot to this point.
