Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Maybe in 10 years like UGA did Mark Richt but to even consider doing anything but extending Heupel on his next contract, after he's taken us to where we are now vs where we were in this amount of time is just...idk what. Beyond stupidity.
It’s just too early make conclusions about ceilings and whatnot.

Here are Steve Spurrier’s first years at Florida:
1990: 9-2
1991: 10-2
1992: 9-4
1993: 11-2

Aside from year one, very similar progression in an easier SEC. And it would still be a couple of years before he really broke through.

Josh’s destiny is nowhere near written yet. My biggest concern with him is that his past experience with being fired may make him hesitate to make needed personnel changes.

took last nights loss pretty hard.

I mean, uga is as vulnerable as they’ve ever been. They’re not that good. Top 3 backs missing. Top 3 receivers missing. Mash unit OL.

And they dominated us post first quarter.

It’s the kind of game that really makes me wonder if we’ll ever be elite again.

And I love me some Heupel, but I’m seriously doubting his system can win in the SEC.
What do you mean by “win in the SEC?” Are you hoping to never lose a conference game again?

I think it’s clear his system wins in the SEC. UGA has just been a thorn in his side because they’ve either been elite when he has played them or they’re a cornered animal that desperately needs to beat us and we had to play them at their place at night.

The offensive scheme will not change. But someone new needs the keys to this offense. Ever since Joey Halze took over. There is no vertical passing game. If we throw it over the middle, it’s a five yard slant. We stopped attacking the middle of the field the day Golesch left. Everything is short and near the sidelines.

A worse OL and Milton/freshman QB will do that.

Heupel is still calling plays. We are slowing recruiting and developing the talent have an offense put up 2022 numbers every year. Just takes time.

Did you not see him cussing them out after the "facemask" call? Or the "offsides" call? Or the "12 man" call? Or the"overturn" call?
Everyone’s favorite meme is him chewing out the refs during the MCB. He is not afraid to chew the refs. But he’s gotta take a fine and put it out there in the media. Go into a press conference and lay out their incompetence. I’m sure Danny White, boosters, and fans alike will pay that fine.

Also, Greg Sankey. Make these refs full time. Stop hiring realtors from Tuscaloosa who want a fun side hustle/hobby. Get some full time officials so that we can have some more consistent officiating.

Even VQ guys pointed out, we find something that works, then go completely away from it. I 100% agree here.

Look USF isnt world beaters, but Golesh gets his guys ready for tempo, and the playbook is open. Its truly fun to watch. Different looks, movement, using PA...creativity.

No one can tell me the offense has gotten better. In fact, would argue its gotten worse since first game. More of an indictment, there is no adjustment to what defense is doing.

Backing out the FCS games, I wonder what our PPG would be.
Good post.

Very few want to hear that Golesh added great value to the offensive system. Yet, the O regressing for two seasons afterwards is right in front of their eyes. The opponents know it and take advantage of it. Fix it in the off season or continue getting what you get.

Your point about SEC offensive performance should smack people in the face. Until last night, the defense has won the SEC games.

We are still in our Clemson 2009-2014 phase.

Need to keep stacking 10 win seasons to reach the next level as a program.

We’ve come a long way talent wise, but we’re still lacking at a number of positions. Oline, WR, linebacker, safeties etc.

We’re a top tier SEC team now, but not at a championship level yet. We just have to keep grinding and stacking talent.

Some of y’all need to sack up! Hated how soft we looked after the first quarter, hated our defensive game plan, and hated that we did not lean on our running game that was effective in the fourth quarter. However, in our fourth year after wondering in the wilderness for almost 15 years, Heupel has us 8–2 and still in the playoff hunt. In hindsight, going into Georgia at night last night with them having two losses was a monstrous task. I felt like we sensed when the calls started going against us in the second quarter, that we knew the SEC was going to do everything possible to prevent Georgia from losing a third game. The game seemed to be called pretty evenly in the first quarter. We need to flush this game, and be mad the next two weeks. Don’t give anything to chance, and certainly don’t let the SEC send one of their crony refereeing Crews to Vanderbilt and try to put them in position to give us a third loss.Be aggressive, and go obliterate our next two opponents. If we do that, I still think we have a better résumé than at least three of the SEC teams that will be in front of us on Tuesday night.
Shouldve been fahrrin's after Arkansas 🥴

I do think some changes need to be made at years end. We all want to win, and in order to be elite that will likely need to happen.

Good news is I trust Huepel to make right decisions.

- OL will have new blood
- WR will have new blood
- Lewis looks good

There will be growing pains but the future looks good, and with Nico being in Y2, i'm hopeful.

Just hope development is there.

Ah, the bards are once again singing the Ballad of Alex the Great.

They mysteriously took a week off, though. Seems strange.

Let me keep going back to 2018 then since you keep telling me there’s no similarities.

How about this?

2018 in SEC games: PPG 20.25

This year: PPG 23.42

JG: 9 TDs
Nico: 5TDs

We either got to tinker with the offensive scheme or we need a better play caller simple as that. And OL needs a new coach don’t care if he is your best friend that’s 4 years in a row your line got dominated by Georgia. We can’t compete if that happens, no teams can compete with that

Here’s where I am at: we are getting closer to Georgia and that is good to see. I was pretty discouraged last night with the way the defense played. If you had told me that we would have scored 17 in the first half I would have felt GREAT about us winning. Defense just wasn’t as sharp tonight. 10-2 in 2/3 years is a great step in the right direction as a program.

I said last night, I’m not normally a “blame the officials” guy but that was really bad. Georgia fumbled the ball twice (on drives they scored I’m pretty sure) and one was reviewed and called back, and another wasn’t even looked at. I have never once in my life seen officials AFTER the play to review for 12 men on the field the way they did. Not to mention the bad facemask penalty that gave them a first down when it would’ve been 3rd and long on our side of the field. False starts not getting called on the last drive of the game. I could go on and on.

It was so obviously one sided and that to me is so frustrating as someone who loves CFB. I’ll never understand how a former ALABAMA QB is allowed to call games in this conference. I also could go without ever hearing Chris Fowler calling one of our games, he clearly does not like us and lets his bias get in the way. GBO 🍊

UGA would be overall favorite in a 12 team playoff. Who would you have over them? Oregon? OSU? I don’t think so. Neither team is tough enough nor do they have the overall personnel.

On a neutral field we could give them as much as anyone else. Maybe we find out.

People need to step away from the ledge. UGA hasn’t lost a home game in 5+ years, and nobody is outtalenting them. They were in a must win situation. They hit an intensity level we couldn’t match in the second half.

I understand the frustration because we were close, but the reality is we still lack talent at multiple positions and UGA capitalized.

UGA's defense scheme wise is elite compared to the Vols high school level. Tim Banks did nothing. He never adjusted. If you asked GA to outline the perfect defense for them to go against, it would be that one.

The Vols defense looks great if you can pressure the QB with 4/5 guys. When you can't, it's game over. It's the same script we've seen play out since he's been here.

We you call people out when they criticize Banks and they win, you need to accept the beat down when they suck. "Oh, he just had a bad game" doesn't cut it.

I mean the job of the defense is to keep them from scoring, right? 4/5 straight drives isn't doing that. The bend but don't break, broke. 😅

Absolutely can call out. That’s why I agreed he had a bad game.

I’m just not ignoring all the good games and saying Vols will never win anything of significance with him as DC.

Always strange to have the Glosh truthers when we have WR's open but overthrow them, ball gets to open WR and they drop it, or play is open in the pass or run game only to have the OL miss a block.

Is Glosh a better OC than Hazle? Who knows. It's an apples to oranges comparison. One had Hooker/better OL/NFL WR's while the other had Milton/freshman QB/worse OL/average WR's.

This alone is the refs helping UGA win. They correctly call that and the game is in OT. (I could also assume Tennessee get at least one FG with one of the TOs) So really the refs beat Tennessee. Not Georgia
