Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Feel like as a team we're sooooo close to being a great team that doesn't have to play flawless to win against lesser teams (like Arkansas).

On defense I think it's still an inexperience thing, especially in the back 7...Pili goes down and we got real thin real fast and real young. Didn't help that arguably our most talented LB (Spillman) hasn't seen the field think it's been health related.

Carter, Telander, Smith all 2nd year guys and really not a ton of games until this season. Perry is a 3rd year guy, but also pretty inexperienced.

Secondary has the talent, clearly but you can still see mental errors because of the inexperience back there.

Offense is frustrating, have experience everywhere but QB...have talent (OL a bit behind though if we're honest) but can't seem to clear the last hurdle to really just get back to 2022 level efficiency and maybe that won't happen again...that team had a lot of NFL talent on it at all levels.

Just need to see the team handle business against UTEP and Vandy. That's all you can control.

Does anybody know when or if Spillman will be available at all this year, how bad is his injury? Would be nice to have him out there at LB

No excuse for the front 4 not to win one on ones in my mind, this was the worst game they have played all year
No excuse for Banks not to switch up his scheme and bring blitzes when he saw the front four were getting zero pressure. Pressuring Beck was easily the biggest defensive key to the game. He has consistently crumbled when pressured.

is that Nico quote real?

I've seen it a few times, but the hound and flintlock sentence set off the "fan service" red flag that you see in most of our fan-generated posts

if it's real, he really does love the university and its fans, and he's right
Doubt it

This is just my opinion, but I would have played with two tight ends if not 3 the entire game. They were open most every play. Beat uga at their own game. Send the 2-3 WRs deep every play. Either they give up a short to mid level pass to the TEs or RB or they leave a 1-1 coverage on the WR.

I hate to say it but near the end of the first quarter (maybe after our third offensive possession?) they did switch to this for mid-field. They were fine giving up plays underneath. They almost ran what you would run late in the fourth quarter for a team in 2-minute offense.

Once we got to mid-field, they would tighten up and blitz more, and we crapped our pants pretty much every time.

I can see why national media are using it as an excuse to dismiss us, because it did give the impression that UGA was in control. They'd let us get a few body shots on the soft underbelly, then tighten up and we'd stall. This happened several times.

I do agree that a few more heaves downfield would have served better to at least make their safeties not scoot up.

We just could not push it past mid-field. That's why we had a few weird special teams decisions to make, too. Right on go/punt/FG fringe in really awkward situations.

ACC at best will get 2 into playoffs
Big 12 (with BYU losing to Kansas) is only going to get in their champion.
Big 10 at best will get in 4, I still think someone is left out but we will see

That's 7 of the 12 right there...your highest rated Group of 5 champion is in and that's a 2 horse race between American (Army) and Mountain West (Boise State or no one). Notre Dame loses to Army and they're out. So good chance the SEC sees at least 4 teams in the playoff of the 6 with 2 losses or better.

We have a rush package and a run package for Dline…they played hurry up so we could not substitute. Blitzing a safety or LB would leave a spot open in the passing game in which Beck was deadly accurate all game.

You have to get pressure with 4 no excuse not to have your best 4 out there on the Dline…the coaches are getting too cute with the rotation

He played in Kent State and at OU, they'll preserve his non medical redshirt. But I'm not sure if he's missed a lot of practice or not. Ya get 4 games...but he could play the bowl game/playoffs and not lose the RS (like Nico did)

There is a lot of blame to go around, Banks got schooled but not going to harp on a guy for 1 bad game plan so far this year when he has been elite in all the others. We still have a top 10 defense in the country and that’s a far cry from the last two years

Probably true but the wound is still fresh. The players didn't show up against Georgia either. There is no reason Beck had that clean of a pocket nearly every single play. We have a great defensive line and they did not make plays.

I mean it's pretty obvious a big part of starting at WR is run blocking.

But our most talent WRs (based on 247 ratings) are all Freshmen except for Bru/Thornton. Squirrel was a 3 star, Brazzell a 3 star, Nimrod too.

But the assumption has to be that Matthews, Staley, and Leacock as well as Webb aren't as good run blocking or they'd be out there more.

I agree Georgia deliberately schemed our rush package from being able to sub through hurry up, the coaches are getting way to cute with the rotation which caused what you saw Saturday. Was a damn good game plan and we failed to adjust

I’ve been saying WR has to be our priority.
We have talented WRs. It's silly to pretend that we don't. Part of the problem is scheme. The dink and dunk passes are part of Heupel's scheme to open up down field shots. Then it's up to Nico to throw an accurate downfield ball. He struggled with that earlier in the season but has gotten better. Or receivers have also struggled making catches. The question is why? Maybe the receivers coach needs to be looked at? People keep clamoring for Matthews, but maybe our WR coach hasn't been able to get him ready yet? When it's the whole group struggling, at what point do you question their coach?

I still think the biggest stat was the goose egg for Georgia in the turnovers.

They've had 5 games with 0 turnovers Kentucky game is the anomaly. But the other 4 times they didn't turn it over they scored at least 31 points, held the opponent under 18 and racked up 375 or more total yards.

Another stat, Mississippi State is the only home game they've had a turnover in all season.

So 1 play = elite blocker? I mean...they've had how many practices and other games this year and you cherry pick his ONE good block?

I could pick one of Squirrel's great catches and share that every time people complain about drops... I guess from now on.

To me there is a reason the younger WR talent isn't on the field... and I don't think it's because Heupel's an idiot.
