Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Again, how do you know that? What evidence even suggests that? He's not played a single down of football at Tennessee.
He doesn’t know. When has that ever stopped him?

Jabari was damn solid. Didn’t have much wiggle but built like a brick 💩house.

Bishop isn’t very big but seems to be a patient runner with decent instincts. I hope he can be serviceable, bc we’ll need him early. But considering he hasn’t really played meaningful snaps yet, there’s no way you could seriously make this claim.

Prepare for these comments after every long pass play we give up all season long:

“Tim Banks strikes again”

“Remind me why Willie Martinez still has a job”

“DBs still don’t know how to turn their heads”

“secondary is the reason this team is going 8-4”

You’ve seen him in camp to know he’s a liability?

CWM isn’t in charge of safeties. Banks is.
I thought the star position was coached by CWM
I’m frustrated with both then
What’s the point of recruiting talented freshman and not playing them while the older guys continually get beat or make sure tackles 15 yards downfield
You could just portal guys each year at that rate
I know CWM is tied to CJH and I respect that but I also haven’t liked CWM ever
I think there are better CB coaches out there and banks is a pretty good DC but his position coaching is not great imo either
Overall the secondary has left a lot to be desired

Yes the talent was bad at the start but overall it seems to be lacking in improvement of talent and play overall compared to the other positions

I can’t wait for this season but if our dbs keep getting burned in the passing game again it’s gonna be frustrating to watch AGAIN…….

Also I assume you live on Marco island
My parents live in fort myers
I really like that area …fort myers/naples
They have grown up significantly in the last 30 years

I think we are going to miss some of the dedication and effort from Wright in the short yardage plays. After the Purdue no-touchdown he really improved on short yardage plays. we need someone willing to lower their shoulder and get those yards.

There will be individuals in front of Television with their strong @$$ bifocals on making sure Brooks is where he should be on the field.

I think a large part of the issue in the past was our d line quality and depth. Even Deon and Revis could only cover a receiver for so long. A good dline helps a lot and now we have that.

With the Defensive Backfield better at the Corners, I believe CTB will play more in your face press coverage and blitz like hell. He has the studs up front and at LB to play this way now.

Curious - do we need to send more than 4 often when we have a monster DL and the best pass rusher in the game?

Always figured, theoretically, you blitz more when you have to send more guys to get pressure, otherwise you send 4 and leave more help behind you and take away the screen pass.

Football dummy, but that's what I always thought anyway 😴

I might pee my pants if I see us in press. Will tell me we finally have 2-3 really legit corners.

True. Also, as mentioned, there were talent issues. The problem is the logic that "there was young talent; play them!". Even if they are more physically talented, they may be a bigger liability if they don't know where to look, where to be or what to do.

This wasn't a knock on Jabari. I just think Bishop is that good, if he stays healthy. When Small signed with UT, he was thought to be a packaged deal to get Big O. Very few fans thought he'd ever see the field. You consider Bishop a borderline walk-on, but his recruitment was an oddity. Did you see him play in high school? He was probably the best RB in the state. Like Small, he won't wow you on paper with measurables. But the kid just produced every single week. I know Seldon is out right now, but did you expect Bishop to be running second behind Sampson to start the season? He's coming back from a season ending injury that happened last preseason himself. His name was the first one mentioned by Heupel after Friday's scrimmage, and he was running against our first team defense. I know he hasn't played a single down, but I definitely wouldn't bet against the kid. I think the Jabari comparison is fair. He's come in with zero hoopla and just put his head down and went to work. Sounds like Jabari Small 2.0 to me.

This got me looking at their HS stats.

Small averaged 8.45 ypc with 25 rush TDs his Sr year.

Bishop 7.61 ypc with 30 rush TDs his Sr year.

Crazy numbers from those two.

You might end up being correct, but what current evidence is there that Bishop is an upgraded version of Jabari Small? The guy ran for 2100+ yds and 24 TDs in his career while working a pretty even split of carries. Additionally, he averaged over 5 ypc. More than Arian Foster, Jalen Hurd, Jay Graham, Montario Hardesty, and Travis Stephens, among others.

It seems wildly assumptive that a borderline walk-on RB who has yet to take a snap is an automatic upgrade.
Don’t think he runs for more YPC than those guys if he was in the same system they were in. Jmo.
