Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Okay, I just realized that if we beat Ohio State at their house, then we have to go to the Rose Bowl and play the number one team Oregon. Alabama, who barely got in plays Notre Dame, who is generally over rated, and then SMU? Seriously? this is some wonky crap.
The number 9 seed is the absolute worst seed in the whole mess. It is truly wonky.

I have seen people say we have to recruit better. And I agree but my big question is how do you do it? Look at the top 10 according to On3:
1. TX
2. Bama
3. Oregon
4. UGA
5. OSU
6. Michicheat
7. AU
8. LSU
9. TAMU
10. TN

That’s 7 out of the top 10 that’s on the SEC. So how do you overcome that? Now I also found something interesting that On3 does. It puts average NIL. Now let’s evaluate that.

TX (215k)
Bama (280k)
Oregon (243 k)
UGA (200k)
OSU (207k)
Michicheat (278k)
AU (190k)
LSU (166k)
TAMU (175k)
TN (178k)

So serious question. How do we realistically ever get into the top 5 in recruiting? And before anyone comes in with oh that doesn’t matter in the portal era, yea it does. Ole Miss built it through the portal and look where they are.
We've been 15-20th in talent in recent years.

If we can actually recruit ~10th consistently, then that's great to get up to #10 in team talent and join the BCR for the first time ever.

Meanwhile here we are with our 2nd 10 win season in 3 years and the playoffs.

Keep winning big (or better yet go deep in the playoffs) and our profile will continue to grow.

In the meantime, these 5* QBs and stud DLs go a long ways...just keep leveling up. 10 wins sure is nice as hell though tbh 😎

Agree with this.

Recruiting rankings also don’t do a great job accounting for positional value. The top players in our classes since Heupel’s been here have been QBs, Edge guys, DL, and WR. Finally got the big fish OT this year but that’s clearly a target. Spend the money there.

I need to do some analysis into the college value of those positions but I think we’d get a nice bump.
You could probably start with Bill C's work in this arena.

His research showed a nice multiplier for defensive recruits, which makes a lot of sense...you can really scheme an offense up to attack a variety of defenses and the talent can take a backseat...but defense tends to be more reactive. Raw talent excels on defense.

Iirc the effects were something like .95 for an offensive recruit and 1.08 for defensive. Something like that.
