Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I’m only shocked that Andy got punched because if you ever saw him in real life, it’s hard not to feel sorry for him. He’s an oddly small man. His head looks too big for his body.

We saw him standing outside the uscjr stadium when we left in 2022 and my youngest son, as a 7th grader, was bigger than him. There’s no way he weighs more than 120lbs.

I mean, I get he can be obnoxious and if he runs his mouth in real life like he does on Twitter, I can see why someone would want to beat the piss out of him. But again,to actually do it considering his appearance is another thing.

The offense scored zero in the first half 3 straight games? They won those. I can’t discuss it anymore with you then.

UF had 2 turnovers, and if I recall we turned Mertz over inside the 5 after our own turnover. Also did it at OU with Arnold. Our defense saved us in a bunch of first halves.
Against bad offenses, we played 2 good teams all year and the defense got destroyed.

And Banks let them drive right down the field and tie it to take us to OT

Small piece of a big puzzle. Saying the offense won the game bc they scored 23 and the D gave up a game tying drive when they only gave up 17 points in the game is leaving out every other drive in the game.

They also held FL to -4 yards on their possession in OT. Why doesn’t that count?

We looked like '22 in our games til OU. Idk why we stopped calling the plays. Maybe Nico got shook, maybe Heupel was just being conservative. They need the urgency they had in '21 & '22
Nico got rocked against OU a lot and a few times against NC State. I feel like that had a big impact on what happened the next several games.

can we all just agree something needs to change on offense? as for the Banks crap, his defenses have gotten progressively better each year, talent has gotten worlds better. And they continue to recruit well there. Seems Banks is a better GM than his peer.

fact: Huepel likes offense.
fact: he is competitive as hell
fact: we have won 10 games, twice

He is smart. He knows our deficiencies.

If its money they need, i'm sure (I hope) Spyre will be our banging the war bond drum, again.

My point is let's see how things unfold. Truthfully as much as WE can see the line issues, WR issues, hastily firing Pope and Smellherfeet, would be disastrous.

Also, those guys had a hand in 10 win season. If it were me, i'd have a detailed plan in place, with goals and objectives (expectations) outlined for them. That may be too micro managey, but, what happened in 2024 to offense cannot go on. Offense is literally regressing. There is no excuse.

Trust Huepel. I dont envy him to have to make decisions, as is issues when you hire friends. Really think answer to OL is getting recruiting help for Ellarbee. Same for Pope.

On Halzle, those saying the routes are vanilla, play calling is bad, etc etc. May be on to something. Will be interesting to see what happens.

One thing is for sure, they need to attack the porthole. Need to ensure we dont put any players on peddle stools, and Nico maintains pocket presents at all times.

No pressure was brought against the freshman qb. Lord knows they read everything quickly.
On the VQ podcast last night. Eric Cain read a stat from Pro football focus, on 31 drop back passes, we sent 8 pressures. Thats 25%. Howard sucks against the blitz, but we never blitz.
Also, the excuse for not blitzing, is we don't have the DB'S to leave one on one, fair enough, but watch the UGA and OSU games we weren't giving our corners very much safety help.
So it's like here take 1 on 1 shots, and here's all the time in the world to get open. It makes no sense.

All through the 2010s people wanted a return to the “decade of dominance” in the 1990s.

Welcome back!

This is exactly how it was. We are reliving it. Big expectations, high rankings, chances at titles and blown opportunities. All-time great players and moments. Frustrations with coaching. Elite SEC program we can’t seem to beat.

It’s all back. Enjoy it!

The offense made the big plays late to win the game. The defense tried to blow it.

Against some of the worst ooc competition, and the bottom dwellers of the sec. Look at how bad our defense played against teams with a pulse like uga and osu. Arky, florida, and vandy had times where they were moving it at will against us too. No in game adjustments either.

OSU and UGA, 2 of the elite teams in the sport that are also in the playoff, are the only teams we play with a pulse?

Everybody moves it well against other teams *at times*. It’s real life football, not PlayStation. Those guys are also on scholarship and getting NIL and their coaches also make millions to figure out how to move the football.

UGA gave up 41 to Bama, 31 to Miss St, 20 to FL (more than we did), 28 to Ole Miss, 21 to UMass, and a whopping 42 to GT that could’ve been more if not for the weird OT rules. Are Kirby and Schumann bad defensive coaches?

Question for you folks that live in the Knoxville area. A few days ago a few mentioned a street or neighborhood with some incredible Christmas lights. We will be traveling through Knoxville on our way to Bristol soon and thought we may check them out if near the interstate.
Gray Eagle Springs

It's in Farragut, about 5 mins from the interstate

This says otherwise. Howard led the nature in completion percentage against the blitz. I’m not suggesting that we couldn’t have done some different things, but he also does well against man coverage. Additionally, we are 26th nationally in blitzing percentage. This board makes it all sound so easy.

Some teams it’s about matchups and strengths and weaknesses. UGA got lit up by Bama and GT. Ole Miss also put up 28 on them. Don’t think anybody would say Kirby and Schumann should be fired.
I’m not saying fire his ass
I’m saying recruit and develop better
Bad matchups can become good matchups with better players and development
We’re too slow at LB and safety and Dline is strange with how it went farther into the aeason

Need speed at safety and speed at linebacker. The offense needs speed at WR because we couldn’t get separation against teams later in the year. We need OT that can keep speed rushers from zipping by them. We need a damn DC that has instinct and can adjust on the fly and he needs to be able to teach these players(LBs, CBs) how to read what the offense is doing when it doesn’t look like what they saw on film.

If we don’t improve any of these, we’ll be 8-4 next year.
