Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Did we not just easily win the biggest game in TN history since 2001...on the road and under the largest of pressures?

Otherwise we're just talking "road games vs top 3 talent teams...at night"...well guess what? No one fares well in those.

UGA hasn't lost at home in years...to anyone. It's almost like beating a top 3 talent, on the road, and (often night games) is very very tough for anyone to do. Let alone with this level of talent gap. Which is why we need time before judging those much. The talent gap closure is on its way, but we were 17th this year. Patience.
It's Vanderbilt settle down. Let's not act like we just went into Tuscaloosa and beat Saban

The schedule is soft. We have 2 hard games next year and a coin flip.
Anything less than that 9 number and we have a problem.
Talking like you know how teams will end up in 12 months...

Usually a bad idea. These are just best estimates rn.

OU, Bama, UF, Arky could end up really good. Miss St, UK, Vandy never know. That's a bunch of teams, so at least a couple of them will end up better than expected. Some worse.

Don't move the goalposts now.

It was the biggest game in TN football since 2001.

The question was playing in big road games.

If you're just limiting it to road games vs UGA, Bama, then lol. Those 2 combined have lost 1 home game in 5 years. Good luck for 99% of teams there...

Nope. I said the same last year.
It's pretty easy to tell what trajectory these teams are on.

Not moving anything.
If it was @UF, I'd give it more respect.
@lsu again go for it.
There are plenty of teams that would garner respect.
A 6 win Vandy who lost to GA ****ing St isnt it.

This is the biggest knock on Heupel. The team seems to underperform and gets outcoached on the road. That has been the case against Florida in Gainesville and yes, against Georgia and Alabama. There have been other ugly games as was the case this year against Arkansas. Not just losses but teams that didn't seem prepared. A next step IMO in Heupel's coaching development. Which game are you referring to that we won on the road? LSU? Vandy?

Edit: I'd include South Carolina and Missouri on this list. Ugly losses.

But, overall, great job by Heupel and bigger things to come.

It already is
Hardly. Where are the employment contracts?

The one thing that makes it professional (and would actually help the sport rn) is lacking.

Exactly why things feel so nutty. There are no contracts, so it's the wild west. Pro leagues are too reasonable (we're talking basically every pro league in the entire world has figured this out) to allow such stupidity, all in blind hopes of returning the sport to the 90s...ain't happening Sankey...

It's more than that. Just look at player loyalty, it's gone. It's already turned into a business. Money runs things now. It's a pro sports minor league.

Is the goal to make the NFL anymore? Kids nowadays can get a multi million dollar deal in college and then just retire
Very few would ever survive through old age with so little money. SS rules would hurt them.

Even a $5mm deal after taxes, probably helping family, (agents/handlers?) who knows what's left. Let's say $2mm.

That means the kid could basically live off 60k/year (at their age, they're basically tied to long-term inflation at best...need money for the next 60+ years, so the 4% rule wouldn't apply), but would also have to be extremely diligent in investing calmly and long-term and not overspending meanwhile...be diligent of insurance.

In short I think most would be crazy to not at least shoot for a protracted NFL career of 5+ years to supplement.

I just watched 'More Than A Voice' on the SEC Network again. It's no secret how I felt about Kesling, I didn't like his football calls and Bert Bertlekamp was the only reason why I listened to basketball. Other than "what a turn of events?", I can't think of another monumental phrase of his after 25 years on the air. That is my Bob Kesling memory and that his last game called was us against his childhood dream school.

I don't know who the VOL Network will get to replace Kesling, but whoever it is, has to have an undeniable passion and excitement for VOLUNTEER football/basketball. I want someone who's dream school has always been TENNESSEE. Something that can not be repressed or covered by "professionalism". I want to feel the significance and what the stadium feels, during our biggest moments.

*John Ward can never be duplicated but the VOL Network owes it to his memory, to get this hire right and that means passion over professionalism.

Beautiful post and I couldn’t agree more. 👏👏

Love Heupel and think he will adapt. But as a young coach, he has to cover up these tells and holes. Don’t want to be a sunshine pumper, but excited to see how he adapts next year - I think the competitor in him will force him to get uncomfy and find some new kinks in the offense.

Travis Williams said he knew what was coming too. So did Mizzou last year. Jacob Warren said teams are figuring out the offense.

But for some reason people wanna blame Nico or the players. It doesn’t matter if you have Peyton Manning if the defense knows your offense they will stop

Yeah there’s a pretty damning article floating around that has quoted from players/teams we’ve played and had success against us about how they knew exactly what we were doing based on what looks they gave us. One osu player said as soon as we went to 12 personnel we were cooked.

Even Jacob Warren pointed to how so many teams are now running a variation of this offense and it’s become predictable.
Yeah. But a lot of us didn’t need an article to tell us, we already knew.

Oh sh*+ ! I’m in trouble again, sunshine police gonna throw me in jail.
Not supposed to acknowledge the bad truths,
Just be happy we ain’t where we were 6 years ago.
My bad.
