Recruiting Football Talk VIII

Never said I thought he was ready. To me that question is irrelevant. He's a freshman. It's expected he won't be as prepared as upperclassmen. The question should be could he have helped us? And IMO he could have given the talent he displayed in his limited opportunities. It's no different than DJ Lagway at Florida. Was he ready this year? Prolly not. But he was the most talented player at that position and despite a competent upperclassmen being ahead of him Florida still found a way to give him playing time. Eventually he got better with experience and closed the season strong.

If our receivers were 2022 good I'd be cool with bringing Mike Matthews along slowly. But we struggled at receiver this year and dealt with injuries. To me that's when you accelerate the growth process for a young guy rather than getting hung up on if he's ready. He's a freshman. He's not supposed to be ready. But if he's talented he can still help you. And that's what good coaches bank on. The young player giving you more good than bad.

We are a big part of the reason for Lagway getting playing time because we blasted Mertz out of the game. I agree with some of what you said but for every "not ready young guys" who thrives with PT, there are multiple cases of "not ready young guys" who perform poorly, make game-changing mistakes and lose confidence. You apply the transitive property of "______ did it so ______ would have done it".

Are you as certain of your posted opinions as you come off? Because, I can agree that there are times when it may benefit a team to roll the dice and play youth but you're constantly calling for it like you know the hypothetical future outcome. Coaches tend to be more conservative with those decisions based on having all the info possible.

Also, there are just some positions that the risk/reward dictates more caution....especially when you're a running and defensive based team in a tough league with thinner margins differentiating winning and losing. A wrong route run leading to pick six or points taken off the board could have completely changed several of our wins and kept us out of the playoffs. At least making it sets the precedent with recruits that we can get there.

So a coach that used us for a raise (twice), a coach that left us for another school (right before signing day and started our multi-year misery) and a former coach of our in-state rival wants our BIGGEST RIVAL'S, former head coach and one of the whiningest, cheatingest, and shadiest pieces of crap on the planet, and the one I consider to be responsible for the current shape of college football, to become the commissioner of all of college football??? For TENNESSEE and most anyone not named alabama, this is the worst idea ever. The 🤡🤡🤡 need to shut up. It can't be anyone still associated with an university. Look what happened with the CFP Committee this year. This would be way worse than the SEC Headquarters being 45 minutes from bama's campus. It's an awful idea and shouldn't happen, which means it probably will. Terrible, just terrible. 🫤

Preach Possum. Literally one of the worst ideas I’ve ever seen or heard. Put me down for a hard, he!! No.

Floyd: And much of their greatest material was in response to losing Syd.

Other bands that improved (their sound) by replacing their singer:

AC/DC
Van Hagar
Savatage
Motley Cru
Rage Against the Machine (AudioSlave) (They were great, great, great. But musically, Cornell was at the top of the game.)

Just curious - RATM? I'm confused. Pretty sure Zack started RATM. Or maybe you were just talking Audioslave, not sure how to read that.

Second the rowing machine recommendation! A concept 2 is loud as a Knoxville home game but it’s a great workout that I’ve been able to be consistent doing. $1,000 and it lasts forever.

Somebody taught me that the foundation of any training regimen is adherence. The workouts you do are always infinitely better than the workouts you don’t do. Because adherence is important, finding a workout you enjoy is also really important.

Also, I can’t cardio my way out of what I eat. An hour’s work on the erg is 800 calories, but so is 4 pieces of pizza that I can eat in 5 minutes. Strength training changes body composition much more effectively than cardio in that regard.
I always thought I would cardio my way out of it and I decided eff it and to start lifting. I use dumbbells. Just got an adjustable bench that holds 900lbs and folds up. Preacher curls and incline curls are monster workouts for biceps that I am discovering lol.

Lifting has made a substantial difference.

I don't understand the commissioner talk at all. The NCAA is collectively the commissioner. We already have an entity filling that role. Why would we need an individual, regardless of his qualifications or biases, to do what the NCAA's job is to do? If we're done with the NCAA, let's overhaul the whole thing instead of just plugging in a new figurehead.
