Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I’ll be upfront in that my knowledge of basketball pales to my knowledge of football. That being said, I have a problem with a coach being here as long as and having as much success as Barnes has had and yet we’re saying there’s a depth issue. Am I wrong in that mentality?
Basketball is kinda like a QB room. You lose a guy or 2 and suddenly you have depth issues.

Estrella out for season with foot injury.
Cam Carr hurting hand then portaling (I think he'd still be here if not injured).
Boswell and Phillips banged up with shoulder injuries but still playing.

Those are things you can't control. No matter how the roster was put together, if you lose 2-4 guys to injury you have depth issues quickly. I think Estrella is the biggest loss. He's the biggest guy we have and actually would've been a much better matchup against Florida last night than Okpara. He could've bodied up with Chinyelu and Condon more effectively.

Addition: I'm reaaaaal close to saying we flat missed on Dubar. That would be on the staff evaluation. I know when he visited the rumor was the staff was not impressed with him and felt he had lied about his height. He has no dribble and I'm not sure he has a brain.

Bru coming back can be a really good thing. He would be another year removed from his injury and he had already transformed his body this last season so he could be more lean and athletic. I think it could be the best version of Bru we have seen. Should he be the #1 target? No, Matthews needs to be that guy. But if we can have just two guys out of Matthews, Staley, Brazzell, and Boo be guys that defenses really worry about like Hyatt and Tillman in 2022, then Bru could have a really productive season. He was great in 2022.

Lmao this is wild

And while Florida defense was physical, a lot of these were uncontested or easy shots. Bizarre game. I knew in the first 4 minutes the game was gonna be bad for us and there was nothing that would change that. Sometimes in basketball it’s just not your night and this was not our night on steroids and against a really good team.

The biggest issue this year specifically is we thought it a good idea to leave 2 scholarships wide open.

So 11 of 13 to begin

JP out for the year, down to 10, Carr hurt & leaving, down to 9...and people are welcome to say "Barnes usually only plays 8 anyway" sure...but having the 5 other scholarship bodies in practice allows everyone to get better while also allowing each to use less energy. Don't believe me? Go run sprints with a group of 10 people one after another then do it with 5 people. You're still only running for 2 minutes but that larger group will allow each person more rest time between their sprints.

Cade, Bishop, and Mashack all being banged up and having to play through injuries is going to make the rest of the season tough. Unless they get healthy and/or Dubar starts contributing at a much higher level so we don't have to play them as much.
