Recruiting Football Talk VIII

I think a lot of people nowadays are falling victim to the algorithm.

Engage with a bunch of Vol fan rage bait... Get a bunch of Vol fan rage bait. It's a great way to get a very skewed idea of what public opinion actually is.
Yep. Since Ellen bought Twitter, the algorithm has been šŸ—‘
Most of twitter is just fear porn and rage engagement. Plus, you have a ton of Vol accounts tweeting racist memes and other garbage. Anyone who says something gets shouted down as not being able to take a joke. Then when you give them the business, they get sensitive.
Social media is just a hate and porn circle jerk, no matter the site.

I mean, it kind of is lucky if his scheme is not the reason they're producing. Coming to a team where RG has everything ready for you in the DL is kind of lucky.

It doesn't mean Banks is bad, but he hasn't had to prove yet that he can out coach the other team with x/o, so the jury is still out. He walked into an elite DL room that made it impossible to be bad. Maybe lucky isn't the right word, but saying he deserves all the credit isn't either. If you put me in that booth with that DL, I'd have been serviceable as a DC. Results aren't always the best indicator of ability.

They were hired 4 days apart, February 11th for RG & February 15th for Banks. And no one was claiming that 2021 DL room was elite.

But banks didn't do anything regarding recruiting or developing the unit that made him look so good. And he certainly didn't out scheme anyone, we played ultra vanilla defense all year for the most part. So I just can't attribute that much of our success to him.

There is a big difference in attributing credit to RG and saying Banks is lucky though.

Thatā€™s all Iā€™ve been saying.

Iā€™ve always believed

ā€œLuck is when preparation meets opportunity.ā€

Banks was prepared to be a DC when the opportunity came. He inherited a great DL coach, but he also had to recognize that and agree with keeping RG. He also had to agree with every other Defensive hire that was made. He trusted his guys and that trust has rewarded him, but thereā€™s nothing lucky about that.

You donā€™t think the DC had anything to do with defensive recruiting?

ClichƩs are rarely as wise or accurate as they sound. Luck is not always where preparation meets opportunity.

For instance, a brand new ceo takes over a fold company in January 2020. COVID happens and every single food company experiences record growth. That ceo got lucky. His results are the best the company has ever seen, but his luck had nothing to do with preparation or ability or intelligence. His results were almost entirely unrelated to him, i.e. he got lucky.

If you want to give him tons of credit for retaining one of the most well-regarded DL coaches in the country, I guess you can. But I'm giving him minimal credit for that and withholding judgment on his ability as a DC until he proves he can do more in the x/o department instead of relying on superior Jimmys and Joes. Pretty much any P4 DC in the country could have done what he's done given the circumstances he was given, so until he shows he can be better than the average DC by out scheming the other team, I'm not going to crown him an elite DC just because of the results this year.

I disagree Banks is lucky, where Iā€™ll leave this.

Plot twist...no matter the outcome against ND, Ryan Day gives the OSU fans Double Gauldens and takes an NFL job.
Lol heā€™s got it made at osu. Donā€™t know why heā€™d leave. Fans can piss and moan all they want while he has the most expensive roster in college football and now pretty much guaranteed in the playoffs every year.

Honestly I don't know if UT would've won (I believe they would have though) but it would've a much closer game if last night's OSU had showed up instead of the one against Oregon and UT
I think the difference in the two games was Texas and us, not a different version of osu.

Really like it, and notable how no athlete anywhere ever says, ā€œIā€™m thankful there is no God, that life arose by chance, there are no transcendent immutable truths, and everything we do and believe is ultimately meaningless. That helps me prepare and play my best!ā€
I donā€™t think itā€™s notable at all.

Just saw on X some sports writer say "Josh Heupal on his best day isn't as creative on offense as Sark".... unfortunately pretty damn accurate based on this season. Folks are seeing how predictable we've become with just about zero wrinkles... not sure if it was Heup just being stubborn and not wanting to change or what, but clearly we ran a vanilla O this season in comparison to the last two seasons... In before "but but but we won 10 games soooo...." We 'ish the bed when it counted against OSU and were easily predictable. Didn't change a dang thing...
And it was funny when folks were posting Heup's press conference before the game when he was saying they weren't changing anything up for the playoffs... Several writers were saying, "yeah, you KNOW Heup is gonna whip up some new stuff for OSU"... LOL and then we literally run the exact same O and OSU knew what we were going to do before we snapped the ball.

Hoping something changes...

IF UT had thumped OSU just as badly, would that make us bad guys? Or just doing what we were supposed to do?

I don't understand holding that against them. They did what they were supposed to do. We didn't and couldn't. Shake hands, show respect, and do better next time.

If TX thumps OSU, then it makes UT look that much more inferior to an in-conference rival we'll have to recruit against. Why on earth would we root for that extra salt in the wound? Why would we want to compound the negative effects of our loss to OSU?
Iā€™d love to be the bad guys. Usually means youā€™re doing something right.

Iā€™ll say though that this post has been the most convincing so far.
