-HubbsI think it's several things.
1. I think that they have tried to do too much this year and it has created too much confusion. Players all talked in the spring and this off-season about how complicated the system was and then the decision to not pair the system down was a bad one. The result of that now in my opinion is that they have lost confidence and it shows.
2. I think schematically there are issues. I think they are asking players to do things they can't do. These corners can't play man coverage. They don't have the speed to run with receivers and don't have confidence to play man coverage in my opinion. I also think they are asking AJ Johnson to do too much. You look at the draw plays and he's the only guy in the middle of the field. Trying to fight off an OL block to make that play is not easy to do. They also can't get to the quarterback with any kind of consistency whether it's DL pressure or blitzes. Yesterday, they ran a ton of stunts and the DL took themselves out of some plays. I don't see the advantage to run stunts and twists with a guy like McCullers. To me he's a guy who just pushes the line of scrimmage. I don't see the value in him running a stunt.
I think that schematically it puts too much stress on guys to make plays that they can't consistently make.
Shelton and Crawley.
Shelton ended up at USC, so they probably would have swiped him from us anyways.
Crawley was the 4 star DC kid that they let go. He ended up having the grades to get in too.Think it was Shelton, and he grew up an Eric Berry fan. Tennessee gave the boy a cold shoulder. Just stupid......I don't know what this staff is ever thinking. They offer good guys late and take sleepers for days. Just dumb to me. The secondary class couldve/should've been:
Gray, Bonner, Shelton, McNeil, and another Safety or cornerback. They knew Lanier's grades were jacked up. Also they knew we were weak at CB. Taking only two to help solve the problem was dumb. I just don't get it personally.

This staff amazes me.......I liked Crawley too. Would fit the SEC with his frame.
It's been stated that Lanier would have been eligible at any other SEC school, but Cheek is really hamstringing our AD. I wouldn't be surprised if Crawley wouldn't have been admitted here if we'd let him sign. My guess is that it was investigated and Cheek gave him a thumbs down.
This is part of my point from earlier. Right now, we have a chancellor that wants us to be another Vanderbilt and he doesn't care if it extends to the football field. Crawley may have been able to get in but Cheek said no. Izzy could have played this year for any other SEC school but UT. Cheek also doesn't want to pay a coach more than we are paying Dooley and he is fighting to keep Dooley. Hamilton laid down and accepted these new rules.
What I'm about to say, I'm sure I will get bashed for.
Say what you want but Hugh Freeze at Ole Miss is doing good things. I know they got their teeth kicked in by UGA in the 2nd half, but he's doing good things on the academics side of things. When he arrived, 25 players were below the GPA limit, so he started attending classes with kids, he even would help tutor them, now there is only 3 players under that limit. The GPA average for the team has increased almost a full point (1.0). That's very impressive. That just speaks volumes of his character. (I know most of you think he is dirty).
He may not be getting instant results, but if I'm an Ole Miss fan, I'm feeling good about where the program is headed.
Just an honest example.
Don't know why people would think Freeze is dirty. He has won anything he had coached including girls high school basketball. He was on a different career path if the University of Memphis had hired him as women's basketball coach a few years back. He seems to be a good man, and he promotes his faith. For those who don't like that, we have a basketball coach who shares his inspiration and faith as well. It is a part of who we are.
Who can fire Cheek? This isn't Vanderbilt. Tennessee isn't known for marvelous academics. We're a powerhouse sports school.
