For what it's worth from aubs board.
UT has been in touch with Gruden several times over the past month or so. JG has told UT that there were four things that had to be done. UT has begun to set the wheels in motion. Gruden has contacted former vol WR coach Kippy Brown and Tee Martin at USC. Gruden would keep Jay Graham as well. Also, there are plans to remove Jimmy Cheech.

Gruden, I'm sure, has talked to Fulmer who filled him in on this. Think about this - the start of his demise coincided with Joe Johnson and Doug Dickey retiring. It could still be that he got lazy, or it could be that the higher ups were already starting to suck.
This is part of my point from earlier. Right now, we have a chancellor that wants us to be another Vanderbilt and he doesn't care if it extends to the football field. Crawley may have been able to get in but Cheek said no. Izzy could have played this year for any other SEC school but UT. Cheek also doesn't want to pay a coach more than we are paying Dooley and he is fighting to keep Dooley. Hamilton laid down and accepted these new rules.
IMO, if Gov. Haslam can reconstruct a new BOT that cares about football (fire Cheek), and Hart fights for the money and benefits (i.e. getting borderline kids into school) that used to be there, we will get back to where we all want to be.

Who can fire Cheek? This isn't Vanderbilt. Tennessee isn't known for marvelous academics. We're a powerhouse sports school.
We are moving in the direction of being known for academics. Things have changed on the hill since Cheeks showed up. Not just anyone can get into UT anymore. For example, the grade point average for UT incoming freshmen in 2011 was 3.81 (year before it was 3.79 and that's higher than than Vanderbilt, last I heard) and the average ACT score was 26.5. 41% had straight A's in HS. I know a kid that had a 3.50 and an ACT of 24 that was denied admittance at UTK. They are encouraging kids that "under perform" in HS to go to a community college or one of the smaller campuses, now. Later on, if they want to, they can re-apply at UTK. It's Cheek's dream for UTK to become a Top 25 University in Academics.\

Fire cheek now!
I agree with coach Matthews, no admin support really hurts.
So Lanier and Crawley could play at uf?
I applaud the fact that we are striving for higher standards...but what is the real purpose of a land grant University?
I suspect the model the Board of Regents is following is the system in use in California. I think that schools there are on a tier system. UTK is considered the top tier and for the best students. The next tier is ETSU, Memphis, TTU, UTC and UT Martin and they get the next level of HS graduates. After that, comes the community colleges. Enrollment at the CC level has skyrocketed in recent years and the CCs have grown exponentially. Partially fueled by the difficulty in getting into the larger universities. It's still the land grant system, in that anyone in the state can get a college education. They are now just guiding people as to where they should go to get that education.
It makes sense that this would affect the Sports Program at UTK. Sounds to me like Cheek wants to be another Duke. If that's the case, then maybe we have seen the best days of Tennessee Football. I think you can get away with something like this with basketball (Obviously Duke has), because the teams are usually small. I don't think it's feasible with football, because of the number recruits needed every year. There are some really smart, top players out there, don't get me wrong, but one school is not going to be able to sign a bunch of them every year. That means we have to work with lesser caliber players with high academic standing. You don't see teams like that winning constantly in College Football and especially not in the SEC.
Random intelligent posters showing up in this thread (no slight to the regulars :hi: )
Those entrance standards went up when the Hope scholarship started...it's just a coincidence that Cheek showed up around the same time...he put all of his effort and UT's money into making UT a top 5 research facility and that has failed miserably...that will ultimately be what gets him fired
Make UT a Duke? Seems like a bad idea.I suspect the model the Board of Regents is following is the system in use in California. I think that schools there are on a tier system. How's everybody liking this AJ McCarron? Everyone was ready to trade Bray for this dude. Told you what he does with pressure on him to win.
He handled the pressure well when it mattered. Its tough when you lose your 2 best WRs before halftime.
The quick passes hurt Bama but also a missed TD to Cooper, fumble around the 10 yard line, and a fumbled PR. All of these were self-inflicted. I have no idea why Bama kept going away from the run, LSU couldnt stop it. Lacy avg 7.5 ypc., Yeldon 7 ypc.
