Well either the players aren’t as bad as you think or the coaches were better than you think bc that’s the only explanation that you would be in position to win those games only to piss them away.

Hint. I can promise you it wasn’t that god awful coaching staff that butch rolled out his last year
I think I saw Chico Canales working at a car wash last week.

So..I'm supposed to think that team was good because it "almost" beat one of shark humpers garbage teams and the Halfcocks?

Dude you have to admit that losing to Florida on the last play of the game irrevocably broke the team. If that doesn't happen I would say that CBJ is still our coach, for better or for worse. Now can we please move on from the 16th million conversation about past coaches' tenures here?

Absolutely! I’m not disputing it.

We all like Pruitt and think there’s a good chance he’s building a solid foundation and culture. I think I speak for everyone there. But you know what will happen if we fire him and hire someone else? As soon as they hit a rough patch we’ll all say “well this coaching staff has to change the culture! There’s a reason we fired Pruitt, you know.”

And it’s technically true - especially in year one. But to me, by year two, you should have successfully implemented enough of your culture and system to beat teams you are clearly more talented than. Just my two cents.
Long but here's why I'm good Pruitt right now.
After having read mostly all your posts since his hiring, I'm not even gonna comment on "we all like Pruitt".

But yes, we absolutely should have beaten Ga State. A rookie HC mistake that I don't expect to see again.

The differences
1. This is truly his 1st time as HC at any major level, not just his 1st year at TN.

2. The fall has gotten worse as time goes on. Butch brought a decent uplift but not "getting back" then, just made it even harder.

3. I don't expect CJP to be an overnight fix all. There's 2 kinds of good coaches, the dynamic genius offense like a Leach or Meyer. Then there's the Richt, Saban style of just building a strong and fundamental FB team.
Looking at our staff, that's the Pruitt plan. It will take longer but if he succeeds, we'll be a good PROGRAM, not a team reliant on 1 certain coach and that falls apart when they leave.

Good post. I don’t disagree with any of this in theory. If he turns it around, wins 4+ this year, I think/hope he’ll be able to continue to recruit well enough to keep building.

There’s very little chance he’s fired this year - I’ve said that 1000 times and have never advocated for it. My fear is a really bad year undermines everything we’re trying to sell on the recruiting trail which leads to an average class. We then go into 2020, win 6 or 7 games, and then we’re in a really tough spot because you’re looking at needing to extend a coach with a sub .500 record through three years or deciding to move on from him.

Tl;dr for some, I know. I don’t have a problem with anyone saying they want to stay the course for the sake of continuity, to avoid a coaching search that will not likely result in a “proven winner”, and in the hopes that Pruitt figures it out and becomes a great head coach. I really don’t. You can sell me on that. What I can’t be sold is that he’s done a good job so far. It just hasn’t been the case.

Well said. Pruitt has to find a way to win 4-5 games this year. If not, he could most certainly be in trouble. And we need some continuity right now. We have to beat MSU or UF. I’m not sure how this team will react if they start 1-6 because there are a lot of winnable games after Bama.

No disagreement.
He's screwed up about to the tune that I expected, except for Ga State. That was huge but we at least got lucky that it was game 1.

Keep looking as good and improved as we have since, and I expect we can salvage a good class. Especially if we sneak an upset somewhere. More riding on QB play than I'm comfortable with, if I'm being honest.

I mean crompton spent time with cutcliffe right? So i think it’s unfair to say he was never developed. No player is going to change THAT much in a year. Crompton benefited more off hardesty being an absolute bell cow more than he did Kiffin imo.
The fact he did and says that speaks volumes. He was also speaking of the entire team. Many of those guys were pushed to another level by that staff that year. Nobody going into that season was pointing out all the NFL players. Never mind what the rest of the roster looked like outside of those few NFL guys.

I'd grade Kiff, Butch, and Pruitt hires as fine.

Dooley hire was and always will be completely inexplicable and inexcusable. 4-8 La Tech coach? WTF? What the hell did he do to even land on a single DA's radar?? Incomprehensible! Still makes me mad just thinking someone could be so dumb as to hire that bum.

I'm talking bad with complete hindsight. I agree though that Dooley was the worst hire on paper.

I was no fan of Kiffin when they hired him, but I liked his dad a lot.

Results of that year were mixed like everything else about Kiffin's tenure. A couple of good wins (SC and UGA), a few bad losses (UCLA, Ole Miss, Va. Tech), and a few near misses going both ways (AL and KY). He had some outstanding talent in some spots (Berry, Hardesty), and some hole fillers in others. Recruiting was mixed with some bright spots and some duds. 7-6 was about right--mixed.
