It's a power thing.
Similar to Goldfinger in the old 007 movie. He wanted to blow up the gold in Ft. Knox so his gold would be worth more.

When Tennessee is bad, these mega boosters are the bulk of the Athletic Department's revenue. Their donations are necessary. When the Vols are good, income across the board is up. Ticket sales, merchandise sales, corporate sponsorships, lower level donations all go up and make the mega boosters less powerful.
Revenue has been out of the roof before COVID, so I don’t believe that at all. We were the most profitable of any SEC program I think. Tell whoever is nixing these hires that could advance our program to take a hike with their money they rode in on, IMO!

Also Freeze is an intresting hire for Pruitt. He doesn't fit the MO of the slow por style offense Pruitt has had so far

Great leaders and men. Not only on the field but in the homes too.
I can just hear it now:

Coach my mom has a question
Mom: Coach why did yall hire that man that likes hookers and burner phones?

ESPN:

Breaking News: Tennessee likes hookers and phones. More at 10

All Pruitt would have to do is win. If Saban can do it then others can as well.

He’s been a rehab professor for sure. Had Lane come in and helped him. Hell, Sark was drunk AF and making dildo jokes at an athletic booster dinner lol. Now he’s probably going to get a gig somewhere down the line.

Unfortunately Tennessee is in the position where he would have to win those games regularly to keep the heat down not just the lower tier of the conference
The first slip and the phone is blowing up
isn't that happening anyway though? we've been thru this several times over the last 12 years..and i'm not saying there's a formula here that automatially equals bama/uga/clemson etc.. type success....they've all gotten where they are via different paths....

what i am saying is we need to decdie what we want to be. if we're gonna take the 'develop and build' approach, i'm fine with that....if we're going to put all our chips in the middle of the table and go for broke, i'm fine with that too.

just don't half azz either one....if you're gonna be bear, be a grizzly...whichever way you decide to do it.

Revenue was sky high because we were on a 6 game winning streak and the fan base thought we could legitimately challenge for the East this year. Same thing happened in 2016 when we were considered a dark horse playoff contender.

Just don’t lose at home to UK and the narrative is completely different right now.
completely? maybe.

i think there are plenty of folks that would take the 3 TD blow outs to UGA and Bama and still do a "show and tell" on why we're still light years away.

UK is gas on a fire, for those folks.

AP talked on last PC about how they all got to see JG throw his SR year. Kid made all the throws, paraphrasing...they had the ranking right. It's between the ears.
He didn't play a lot of ball. I think only 6 games his senior year. Of course he shined in elite11 7on7 etc.. But you can't simulate pass rush and actually getting hit in practice. Then Butch gave him Chico as a QB coach and a TE coach as a OC. Bajakian would've developed JG, so would Helton. Weinke is a bad QB coach and is putting it on record at this point.

We had $100 million yearly revenue before the winning streak. The money that the program gets from the SEC network is astronomical. We can afford to lose a single prominent booster that is nixing hires and not miss a beat, even if it is Haslam.

Which position group will be worse than this year? I can't really think of any.
TE won't be worse, but we'll be young.

losing trey smith on the O line won't go unnoticed, and we may still be searching a bit for OT, or at least depth there....but as a group, the OL should still be very good i think.

QB will be a question until it's not. you're looking at a RS freshman, true freshman or hoping shrout or maurer finally gets it.....

WR should be good to go
RB should be good to go

DL should be better.
LB should be better
the secondary...kinda/sorta a question mark, but i wouldn't be shocked if it turned out to be the strength of the defense next year.

special teams....always TBD imo....it's been a bit shaky this year and i still don't have a ton of confidence when we go out for FG's.

overall, the team has a real chance to be very good. QB will be the biggie imo.

Yeah losing Trey Smith would really hurt but hopefully spraggins will be good enough to hold his own. I think OL should be fine if everyone else comes back.
