HB gonna transfer to Georgia and win the heisman and a NC. That’s TN’s luck.

I hope he does to be honest so he can show how dumb and blind these two clowns are we hired at this university and HB has the tools to beat us each year! As a Freshman.I hope he plays against salter and plays lights out

I’m ready to move on from Chaney. Good OC can mask poor QB play to an extent. JG isn’t good but Chaney did him no favors in getting him in position to make plays and throws. He has zero creativity. We never motion. Never try and make the defense think about what they’re doing. He’s written off a top 4 GA high school QB in history. Him and Pruitt have barely given the kid reps. I feel bad for HB. It was his dream to come here. He worked his way to this level and did everything you can ask form a high school recruit to get to this level and then his OC and HC don’t even give him a chance. He may never amount to the hype but he deserves a chance. Chaney has to go. He didn’t even want to be here until we overpaid him.
This is just me thinking out loud. If you can not manage your own weight how can you have the energy and discipline required to manage a whole offense and develop it. Probably has zero to do with anything just putting my two cents in.

Some here might disagree, but the way that went down is actually a sign of some dysfunction in the program, IMO. Not a high-functioning one.

Before that season started, Johnny was not on the hot seat by any stretch but he'd rubbed many in the AD the wrong way by going around publicly chirping about his contract and about how he was underappreciated/deserved a raise. His job security, while solid, was not at the level it was perhaps in the late 80s. Then he's out for heart surgery and the team performs very well under Fulmer in his absence, going 3-0 with wins over ranked Georgia and Florida teams. You can also believe or not believe that Fulmer worked back channels about forcing Johnny out.

Johnny returns and wins his first 2 games back, but then loses 3 in a row (2 upset losses + a loss to Bama), then closes 3-0 against weak teams, then is forced out.

The thinking is that perhaps Johnny had rubbed some important people the wrong way, and it coincided with Fulmer's emergence as a good OC and a trendy name who was being mentioned frequently on the coaching carousel in connection with other head coaching jobs. They didn't want to lose him.
the Florida game that year is what really opened people's eyes on Fulmer. Georgia to a lesser extent.

when johnny came back, the wheels fell off, losing to USCe, Bama and i think Arkansas?....it was the equivalent of what butch did in 2016. we should have won the East that year, not Florida....but as has prove out, dysfunction won out, and we lost.

i think you could spread blame across both camps that season.....Johnny wans't on a hot seat, and had no reason to fear for his job, despite what Fulmer did. and Fulmer was still the heir apparent, and they both got impatient and antsy about the whole situation. just a terrible way to end what was otherwise gonna be a great year.

don't disagree. and he didn't really help shrout with the intial play calling he did for him when he got in the game either.....you could arge the same with Bailey.

He never does!!! Any QB other than JG the playbook gets smaller! Extremely smaller it’s BS! this kid came here during a covid year with serious restrictions and they are already writing him off?...it’s wrong just plain wrong.he could have literally went anywhere and chose here...would y’all have honestly wanted to play against him if he went to Florida for 4 years!?!..f*** no

He really is a bad OC the game has changed since he was at UT with Bray. The lack of creativity is mind blowing. Other teams much worse than us look like they are doing illegal stuff compared to our offense.
i don't think he's bad. i just think he's better with better players. lol. i'll put it this way...i wasn't upset he got hired here, and i thought it was a very good hire all things considered. i didn't however, think we were getting some great offensive innovator....

and really, last year, and this year, a lot of the play calling really hasn't been terrible. the execution of some of those plays has been, and was last year...but the calls themselves, many of them have been well timed, very good calls....you just don't get credit for a good call when the play blows up in your face.

Trask is a SR and if the one time transfer is approved and Bailey went there, there would be zero drop off for them. Mullen would have him as a 1st rd pick.

This goes back to seeing these fat ass coaches who we let coach our kids in little league football run these kids to death until they throw up!..knowing they wouldn’t or couldn’t run that hard themselves..I will never have someone do Or work harder than what I would work it’s just not fair.surprisingly a lot of your overweight coaches never played a sport or a lick of football in their lives.

whoa....chill. i don't think they';re writing him off at all. he really, probably, isn't/wasn't ready because of the covid off season.

i think things may look a bit different after the guy gets some more reps under his belt....and shows some proficiency at the "adminstrative" part of the position....

he may prefer salter's overall skill set....but that doesn't mean if baiely starts performing, that he won't play or be 'the guy'....

i'd put all that in the TBD camp.....

After listening to the VQ podcast I believe Salter will be the starting QB next year and Chaney was never sold on Bailey.
Then fire Chaney after the last game! You never put all of your eggs in the basket of someone who hasn’t even signed his NLI yet! Develop what’s on your roster and let them compete when he gets here.

eh. they got what htey got, and chaney wasn't here long enough last year to make an impact on getting another QB in the mix, and that was the case when what's his name decided on aTm...so you have to stick on HB.....

and that he wasn't chaney's first choice doesn't mean that they won't be successful together.

and by all accounts Chaney is getting "his" guy in Salter...so if nothing else you should get a solid competition at QB between two kids that should be really good.

if HB turns out to be uber productive, he's not gonna turn a blind eye to that.....

Rule #1 of OC Hires

Do NOT hire an OC who is ready to retire. The game will have most likely passed you by (unless you are Chan Gailey) and you will NOT be aggressive by nature. I wanted Briles, Osovet, but no we pay all the cows for one fat magic bean who was servicable at best when he was here last, over a decade ago. How many times do we have to watch crappy OC's sink the ship at UT?

mike deboard approves this message.....

in genearl, i do agree.

Yeah. It was before my time (I was just 5 years old), but the combo of Johnny publicly complaining about money, the team's unimpressive performances with him as coach that year, and his heir apparent looking great in limited games did him in.

I don't know if it was time for Johnny to go or not, but you can't deny that how the team performed with him as coach in 1992 was pretty bad. He went 5-3, which doesn't sound terrible on the surface but the 5 wins were against total junk opponents that had a combined record of 19-36, plus he lost to bad Arkansas and South Carolina teams (first year in the SEC for each) that had a combined record of 8-13-1. I'm sure in the back of people's minds the whole time were thoughts like "Yeah, Johnny's been pretty good, but he won a national title at Pitt and he's never been able to get us to quite that level here." In the modern era, I bet Johnny would have lasted 3-4 seasons at Tennessee before being fired.

Still don’t know how VQ and others like Locked On determined that we don’t have anything better on the bench by watching the hand off contests following JG’s injury. Failed gameplan makes all QBs following it fails.
yep. game plan for that kid. don't throw him in mop up duty in a game we're toast in, and then judge him for that.

Tennessee needs to:

1) Cut ties with whichever coaching search firm they have on retainer. The performance has been abysmal.

2) Stop asking Peyton Manning for his opinion. The guy cannot evaluate today's college game and what it takes to be a successful head coach.
Peyton Manning thinks Adam Gase is a good coach. That’s all you need to know right there 😂😂
