A lot of you are prescribing traits of old athletic directors on the new one that may not totally fit.

My bet is Fulmer is far less patient and timid than the ADs who came before.
why do you think that though? i've never seen anything about Fulmer that says it's in his DNA to make a move like we're discussing here. him being a former head coach that has been on the dirty end of being done dirty by back room politics, i doubt very seriously he's of the mindset that says that's what's needed here. especialy for a guy that he picked.....

i would be really surprised if he's already "there" in terms of not only being willing to do something about CJP, but that it was in process, or about to be so.

1) Unlike past athletic directors, his allegiance is purely to the University and doesn't plan to be in this job much longer. He's not tied to this coach in the traditional way an athletic director might be. For this reason, he won't be worried if people think he's a failure because Pruitt failed. All he wants is to win.

2) I know how close he was to pulling the plug last year, no matter how its spun now. He was getting itchy and making calls. This year feels much more serious and depressing than last.

How long did Fulmer give Warlick? Good chance Pruitt has 2 more years regardless of results. Its unfortunate but it is what it is

Whatever the case this year, Fulmer should absolutely be on the phone sending out feelers and making a list that is ready to go. The good part about all this is it isn’t a surprise. There is plenty of time to do this right. At a minimum Freeze should be his first call.

He’s trying to say that it’s gonna be hard to hire a standing HC when the regular season for most teams ends after or during the early signing period
Their fans probably won't be too happy. But Bobo is probably their best bet unless they have a big fish on the hook. If not him their class may look worse than Butch's last one.

VALID POINT! But much different scenario. Warlick was Pats right hand man who Fulmer loved and respected, all 3 have been around the university for what seemed like eternity.Warlick unfortunately just isn’t and wasn’t Pat!

True, but the situation with Holly is much different than any other coach could be.
And both of you all have very true and reasonable counter points.

An AD who was a coach that won a national championship who feels he was fired wrongly will probably give his hand picked hire more time than you think.

ok, so that's interesting.

i can buy 1.

on 2 though.....i believe he was probably pretty antsy especially after the way last season started....i mean you could tel by looking at his face when they'd show him on TV....

but why go with the whoel "vols are back" and the extension hoopla if he he had reservations? afterall, the same guy that won out is the same guy that had that awful start.

and this year, i think covid/offseason plays a heavy role in where we are, vs. where we might have been.....

like i said, that's interesting. and if true, i'd probably feel the same as you. i just think this season is a different animal, and i could see phil "understanding" how we got where we are now this year a whole lot easier than understanding how last season started.

There was a poster on here who threw a barb at me, but I thought it was a pretty good description. I wouldn't say I'm "in the know," but I have a lot of media contacts and they hear a lot of stuff they're afraid to report. I've got no skin in the game so I can talk about some of that stuff here.

Anyway, the reporting by Pete Thamel (who we all hate) last year that Fulmer was considering firing Pruitt and inserting himself as head coach, on a temporary basis, was correct.

I don't think it was ever going to happen - it was mostly Phil just throwing ideas out to his friends and former assistants, but he was talking about it.

Oh nice!...I’ll keep up.I appreciate the honesty 🤘🏽🧡🤍

Pruitt will get one more year regardless of how we finish. He will get a year without JG and that will be the measuring stick. Prepare your bodies.
The measuring stick should be continuing to trot JG out there with lack of development!!

Pruitt was "hand picked" in a way, but in a way he wasn't. Haven't we heard some pretty solid reporting that Fulmer was turned down by a number of candidates before he got to the final three of Pruitt, Tucker and Steele.

A few that come to mind: Brohm, Doeren, Patterson, Fuente, and we know the situation with Gundy.

he wasn't the AD when those guys were approached, originally.

Then he gave him a raise and extension?
