Pruitt was "hand picked" in a way, but in a way he wasn't. Haven't we heard some pretty solid reporting that Fulmer was turned down by a number of candidates before he got to the final three of Pruitt, Tucker and Steele.
A few that come to mind: Brohm, Doeren, Patterson, Fuente, and we know the situation with Gundy.
Right, but he was involved in the process and interviewed some of them in tandem with Currie, if I remember correctly.he wasn't the AD when those guys were approached, originally.
That situation was very unique and will never be repeated.

yeah, that's how i remember it as well. but that still wasn't FUlmer, the guy in charge, making those calls.....Right, but he was involved in the process and interviewed some of them in tandem with Currie, if I remember correctly.
I know Fulmer called Gary Patterson and he said he wasn't interested. Then he called Cutcliffe, half to ask him about his interest and half to get any recommendations, and Cutcliffe told him to call Fuente and Doeren. Fuente didn't want to leave VT, Doeren was all but signed then caught wind of the backlash on Twitter and didn't want to be Schiano'd.
I believe Brohm came up as a recommendation from Peyton - and a deal was done with him until we told him we weren't paying the full buyout.

Reading the tea leaves, and considering the fan base (and the boosters we hear from on this board) get madder week by week, I think losing 3 out of 4, with Florida and A&M blasting us into the sun, I think we'll have a new head coach in 2021.I agree, just such a drastic change. So what does your gut tell you KV, do we have a new HC in 2021?
you remember the 2017 off season? lol.@Kingston Vol, appreciate the info you bring, curious question: In retrospect, is there a reason that the candidate pool boiled down to 3 guys who had limited experience (if at all) as a HC? Do you think we'd face the same issue if in this same scenario again this season or next? I'd like to think CPF has unlimited contacts and relationships throughout the coaching profession, but then again, his 'coaching tree' isn't as robust as some others.
I think we just spend too much time feeding into each other. Pruitt has atleast another year. We will make coaching changes, and try to bring in another class or two before we give up on Pruitt.Reading the tea leaves, and considering the fan base (and the boosters we hear from on this board) get madder week by week, I think losing 3 out of 4, with Florida and A&M blasting us into the sun, I think we'll have a new head coach in 2021.
I'd say there's about a 5% chance it's Hugh Freeze.
Yes, I know we were all clamoring for him, and I know the second time Curry was scrambling, but going back to that well the second time...made no sense. He told you no once before. He's at his alma mater. He is not on the hot seat there. Here's the deal, I think there are very few current head coaches at P5 schools, who aren't already on a hot seat, that would have any interest in coming to a TN or SC to having to play FL, GA, Bama/Clemson every year. Facts are facts. That is why we end up hiring a McGoogle. When Pruitt's gone it will be a G5 HC or a P5 assistant. Occasionally, you end up like A&M and find a "Jimbo" but that is akin to finding Moby Dick. And look what they had pay to get him. He has a $50M+ buyout. The only other P5 school coaches that are even within the realm of possibility are Matt Campbell and Tom Allen, just because they are traditional bottom-feeders, but with all the TV $$$ these days, why leave somewhere you gotten your team to a point where your fans are perfectly happy with 7 win season to go to place where going 7-5 after yr 3 will get you canned?Twice!!

1) Unlike past athletic directors, his allegiance is purely to the University and doesn't plan to be in this job much longer. He's not tied to this coach in the traditional way an athletic director might be. For this reason, he won't be worried if people think he's a failure because Pruitt failed. All he wants is to win.
2) I know how close he was to pulling the plug last year, no matter how its spun now. He was getting itchy and making calls. This year feels much more serious and depressing than last.
I think Fulmer made the calculation that he wasn't going to be able to get a successful, sitting head coach to leave a sure thing for the program and fanbase who just got two hires nixed (Schiano and Doeren). So, once that was the case, he went down to the coordinator level, and you could argue Pruitt, Tucker and Steele were the top coordinators in the SEC at that point.@Kingston Vol, appreciate the info you bring, curious question: In retrospect, is there a reason that the candidate pool boiled down to 3 guys who had limited experience (if at all) as a HC?
