VA Tech fans are wishing for this to happen.

Yeah, my thinking is he’ll be fired around the same time Pruitt is.

I like Fuente, but he wouldn’t be at the top of my list either.

I just remember him being Fulmer’s first call in 2017 (at Cutcliffe’s recommendation) and I think he might try it again.

This article doesn’t fully mention it, but it’s the best I could find.

He’s been very underwhelming at VT. Lived in VIrginia for 18 years and a lot of friends are tech fans and they’ve wanted him gone for a while now.

Has very Dave Doering vibes.

I personally think getting rid of JG will have a lot bigger positive impact on UT going forward than any coaching changes. JMO

JP needs one year without horrible, inconsistent qb play. JG has been like fools gold for him IMO

And this is the circle, and I’ve been wondering if Pruitt hasn’t been mapping on his own sh&$ from being a former QB is high school and initially in college into JG and that’s why he’s treating him with kid gloves. That, plus the Rona curtailing Bailey’s reps and apparently JG being a practice star, is how we got to where we are.

I’m mad about it. I think any coach that loses to Georgia State, Vandy, and Kentucky in his tenure is red-flagged, but I just don’t see Fulmer cutting ties. Especially with early signing day, and since Fulmer is old school and sees the coaching convention as a crucial part of meeting people to fill out a coaching staff, and that I doubt that is happening, I just don’t see him pulling the trigger.

Trying to go back in time on the Twitter machine:

When Fulmer took over, it looks like the first two to report Fuente as Fulmer’s first candidate were John Brice and Tony Basilio.

Then it was quickly reported that Fuente had no interest in either the Tennessee or Florida State jobs.

Couple of notable things: he was coming off 10-4 and 9-4, so it’s not surprising he didn’t want to leave VT.

Since then, things have gone south and VT fans want him fired. He tried very hard to get the Baylor job last year before they hired Aranda.

Fuente?? Tee and Ansley made your list now it’s failure at VT, Fuente? Why do you troll us like this?
Questions like this legitimately make no sense to me.

“My” list is irrelevant, it’s not nor has it ever been about who I want - because I’d go to Ames, Iowa and start the bidding at $7M a year.

I’m just trying to find the middle of the Venn Diagram of realistic hires, coaches Fulmer has an affinity for, and people who would take the job.

In three successive coaching searches we’ve hired, at best, our 4th place candidate (Butch).

To act like we’re going to make this swift decision on Hugh Freeze is comical.

What’s even more comical is that after all these coaching hire failures in a row, UT would hire Tee, Ansley or recently fired for failing Fuente. I get you’re trying to be “realistic” but I think you’re setting the bar pretty low for a Pruitt replacement if he’s fired this year, even if we are low bar UT.

Fuente has done fine at va tech. He hasn’t taken them to their ceiling and thus wouldn’t be the home run hire he would have been 3 years ago but it would be a solid hire. 7-9 win seasons would be the norm and that is what we need now

Since everyone is calling their shots on dates of coaching hires here’s mine

Dec 20 th 2020 Pruitt is retained

Dec 20th 2021 Pruitt is retained after going 7-5

November 20th 2022 Pruitt is fired

Dec 1st 2022 bill clarke is hired

Do you think Campbell would be a good hire here? Just asking cuz he’s been around the Midwest region and never in the south. No question he can coach.

Then why have they been so average since Vince Young Colt McCoy?

The better question.

Like Kingston said, lots of similarities with Tennessee. Mack Brown and Fulmer had similar career trajectories - great talent accumulators, average game day coaches who would always get beat by a big rival, then got over the hump one year and won a NC. Mack had another couple of great teams in 2008-2009, similar to Tennessee in 2001, and then things got stale, complacent, and there were a lot of recruiting misses, other coaches in the league passed him by. Sound familiar?

Like Tennessee, Texas has found that replacing a generational coach isn't as easy at it may seem. They didn't have a Kiffin, but Charlie Strong had the exact same record as Dooley, and Herman is looking a lot like Butch's body of work. There were some early recruiting successes, a few big wins and respectable records, but this year is a lot like Butch in 2016 - a team with a senior QB and several developed recruiting classes playing in a very down year for the Big 12 (like the SEC East in 2016), and they aren't even going to get to the title game. By all indications, it looks like Herman is gone, possibly as soon as this week, but they may wait until after the last game.
