Not true. If we would have "overpaid" at the time for Mullen, he wouldn't have waited out Florida and Chip Kelly.

What I didn't get is why we did "overpay" for Mullen. Getting a solid coach while screwing up our rival's backup plan would have been worth the money.
He waited out BOTH Kelly and Frost. That’s how badly he coveted the Florida job.

I mean, it's pretty obvious his source is Tee Martin, right? Both are from South Alabama, I'm pretty positive he was out front on Tee coming back here and he was the only one providing updates on the Tee-South Alabama HC position. Additionally, he was the one that had the lead on Velus Jones being interested in transferring here two years ago and then again when he transferred here last year. Velus is also from Mobile, so is Tee, Tee obviously coached him at USC and here.
I think it is well known that Tee is a source for Trey - Tee has been on his radio show multiple times. For this reason, I believe it would be very stupid for Tee to immediately go and tell everything he knows to Trey.

Each coach or staffer usually has a media member they talk to - and the athletic administration usually monitors those relationships.

I know a couple of folks over at Fox Sports Knoxville, and in talking to them, Trey had been working on this story for weeks. Tee might have been a source, but he had others.

Here's the bottom line: I have very few sources, and I knew about Neids getting busted weeks ago - and I posted about it here when I heard about it. So if I knew, that means there were leaks all over the place.

i don't even think he ever entertained hearing the offer until after he knew what was happening at FL.

it never got past "hi, dan, this is John Currie...." "hi john, let me call you back tomorrow............"

lol.

Most coaches would jump for another job. For most, it's all about the money. Contracts don't hold people when schools are willing to pay outrageous sums to get the name they want.
The Matt Campbell solution feels pretty natural if you are worried your coach is going to bounce on you in one or two years.

You can say what you want about paying infinite amounts of money to get your guy. That guy's buyout has clearly kept poachers away.

SIAP - this makes sense to me...

This makes a lot of sense tbh!!
Quick, short cool story bro...
I work for my FIL, my wife runs his company, 220 employees, her older brother is VP, and literally has not worked for 5 years. He has zero accountability bc admitting fault in him would be her father admitting to his own failure, and he’s not about to do that.
I see Fulmer doing the exact same thing here on his first big coaching decision. End story.

Fanbase is starting to check out. Attendance totals prove it. They are getting more and more fed up. And the younger generation could care less. I bet we average 60k next year if Pruitt survives. And less every year we keep him. We are literally waving the white flag.

I agree. I never dreamed I’d become so apathetic. I actually looked more forward to basketball season this year then football. I moved to Knoxville when I was 12. (1990.) I hated TN. That is until a sweet grandpa at my church who was a WWII vet and alumni took me to my first game. I was hooked and have never looked back-until this year. Still love my VOLs but not like I used to.

Dooley only got three years and he was a better coach. I dont see how it is even an option that he could possibly come back.

Dooley was not a better coach. How did this rumor get started?

He was 4-18 in the SEC. Last SEC loss he was already out but during his timeframe we went 4-19 in the SEC.

Dooley:

15-21 (4-18)

Pruitt

16-19 (10-16)

Dooley put up points, that’s it. Terrible coach. Worse than Pruitt.

He waited them out because we didn't make an offer to not wait them out.

If Tennessee would have offered upwards of 8 million dollars and put a 24 hour clock on it, he likely comes here. Tennessee did Tennessee things and didn't give him a "make him say no" offer. Instead we tried to go toe to toe with our rival on their fall back option.

People would have lost their minds at Mullen getting offered 8 million dollars, but that would be cheap for the benefit of sticking it to our rival.

Who knows if Florida would have matched, but Tennessee didn't get serious about Mullen.

don't you think that only applies to a certain segment of the potential candidate list? i mean, if you're at a g5, 2nd tier type school, going from several hundred thousand-$1M/year to $3-4M+ a year is a big deal.

but as we've seen, once guys, and there are a lot of them now, that hit that benchmark, they don't necessarily leave for an extra $m/year or whatever.

situation, circumstance, recruiting, competition, administration, stability, rosters....there's a lot to it now, especially when the shelf life is 3 years these days.

we offered Gundy, what $6/7M/year last time around and he said no thanks.....now the guy at Coastal, would jump on that.,...or Napier or whatever....but to get a guy that we think is capable and able, that kind of money is available almost anywhere, and they can choose the situation or just stay where they are.

Mullen wanted FL. Kirby wanted UGA. as we already found out with Mullen, we weren't going to win that battle. so absent UF not ever offering him the job, we weren't going to get him.

Tennessee didn't make serious offer.

Mullen wasn’t somebody who deserved $8m/yr

Dooley took over a far far worse situation than Pruitt and at least came close to beating some rivals.

Dooley was more competitive in SEC competition and never lost to someone like GA state

Maybe but I'd rather watch a Dooley offense with Tyler Spray putting up points than Pruitt and his slop... God that's a terrible thought to think.

We will average 60k if we don't win games. People will show up in the beginning of they are allowed to. If we win people will show up. The thing is, I don't know if we will be winning with Pruitt as our head coach.

Hiring a solid coach plus sticking it to your rival after their first two choices said no is more than worth 8 Million per year. Especially when Mullen was also guaranteed to bring Todd Grantham at DC.

Came close to beating down rivals and got beat by much worse teams. Pruitt does the same thing (minus being close to beating rivals), yet he does it just a little bit better.

Dooley sucks. Pruitt sucks. Whoever makes our hiring decisions sucks.
