Recruiting Forum Football Talk III

The money we were offering was comparable to what Florida was negotiating with to Kelly.......

So why wouldn't you wait on Florida if the offer you have a Tennessee is virtually the same that Florida is prepared to offer their next coach. Worst case, Tennessee and Florida get into a bidding war over you and you make more money.......

But yes, this is obviously revisionist history.....
because there was no guarantee they would ever even give you a call? the only guarantee at the time was you could stay at MSU and probably get a raise, or take the TN job.

or wait and hope the job you really want, gets far enough down their list to give you call. but in the mean time, "whew, sure is a good thing i got this offer on the table, i'm all good either way."

i'm sure he was offended by our offer, and that's why he tabled it, fingers crossed FL would call.

I hope it was worth it. How many recruits, current and future, did we lose due to all these rumors flying around?
See, that's the thing. How many recruits will we lose out of Tennessee's class next year? And all the following years? Because JP doesn't have the backing in the administration or with fans anymore. Recruits know that. If they don't other coaches will make sure they do.They are not going to buy what he was selling anymore. So the only HOPE we had of even getting out of the basement of the east was to get a coach that would bring in some excitement or move to another conference.

Hope bailey transfers with shrout. Eric gray needs to transfer as well. Henry T should transfer. Hahahaha I love it.

Where is this coming from? Not saying you are wrong at all, just have no clue why he would want us and not AU.
I don't see a scenario of him turning down Auburn but wanting this job as being likely at all.

Just more indication of where we are, we are staring another third tier coaching hire in the eye.

yes. it would have.

it wouldn't have mattered. he was gonna wait and see what happened at FL. and if they would pay him $10m, he'd still go there.

If Tennessee would have offered 8 million or more, it would have been perceived as over paying for Mullen across the country and in the media, but Mullen would have been Tennessee's coach.

About what I thought. The problem isn’t BCS vs Committee, the problem is parity. I don’t have the answers on how to fix that, but I do know there isn’t an easy fix.
Yup. BCS and CFB top 4 is typically the same. I’ll go back and post them but I’m almost certain the top #4 is almost always the same sometimes a different order tho. Saban has changed CFB

Agreed. The big names that are floated about-- Meyer, Petersen, Bob Stoops, even Patterson and Campbell-- generally are ruled out quickly. They're in a position to say "no" if it's not what they want. But schools with openings make the calls.

Then you have guys like Fickell who's in a position to be choosy as well. So working a list gets you past the homerun hires pretty quickly, and then it becomes a matter of how much you'll compromise what you want with what you can get. If you're smart and lucky, you find the sweet spot; if not, you make a compromise hire and hope for the best.

Yeah I’ve kind of resigned to this fact. Bring me Sarkisian, Brown, Malzahn, Napier, O’Brien, or Marrone. I think at least some of these guys would reasonably say yes and would do so much better than Pruitt has. At worst, they would be a stop gap guy until the program can right the ship enough to attract a top shelf guy (I have no faith that this will happen under Fulmer either BTW). At best, you hit on the one. Pruitt is 100% not the one.

Mullen and his camp always knew and were told by Stricklin that he would have shot at job if things broke down with Chip Kelly.

To say there was no guarantee that Mullen would get a call from Florida is just not accurate. Especially considering the only offer Mullen had in hand (from Tennessee) was around the same amount of money that Florida was putting out there for its coaching search.

Hypothetical question. Where would this program be if Mike Gundy had taken this job? I believe at least 7-9 wins per the past 2 seasons. For the life of me I can't understand why he's the only coach the Brinks truck was pulled up to. At least that we know of.

Napier turning down Auburn doesn't mean anything. He wants the TN job(assumption based on runors). But he's got it made at Louisiana. He has no reason to be in a hurry and just take any job. Im sure he is perfectly fine at staying at Louisiana another year to see what happens with Pruitt, if he keeps hi success up, there's no reason not to believe he won't get more offers next year if he doesn't get the TN job. He's betting on himself and has nothing to lose, it doesn't mean he's heard something.
