we do this every off season....and it doesn't matter, because once we see the games played, the "how" comes in to focus and each win and loss looks a certain way thru the "eye test" lens.

9-3, would be ridiculously good coming off this year, no matter the lens.
It would be huge. What if we are 9-3 and get blown out by the big 3 though? We have to start being competitive in those games.

They suck at math.
And in parsing reality.

On talent alone Pruitt left at least 2 games on the field against Arkansas and Kentucky meaning this year should have been 5-5 at a minimum. With competent coaching there is at least one more potential win out there in Auburn.

So it's not even trying to convince yourself that there is some complex algorithm to translate a Covid all SEC schedule to a "normal year" (and that requires ignoring his atrocious failures against "sure" wins like GSU and BYU which means you can't really count extra wins as gimmes anyway), but in understanding how much he underperforms.

Put in a position to hire Gus or keep Pruitt with reasons for him to stay for 2+ years.

I’m not keeping Pruitt if I’ll fire him anyway. It’s the same outcome if Gus fails.
You're hatred of Pruitt is clouding your common sense...failure is failure whether it is Pruitt or Gus.

I want them to go after someone with more opportunity for success than Gus.

And your closed mind against Gus is forgetting what he can do for the image of Tennessee rignt now.

Everyone wants a successful coach. We’ve tried 4 times and failed horribly.

We are really going to hang in a year too late and all these instate studs will go elsewhere when we fire him next year. It’s so obvious it hurts. We are going to waste a chance at signing Nolen, Simpson and James. No chance they sign here after a 6-6 5-7 season next year.

you won't be able to replace the departing assistants with quality coaches w/out 2 year deals. and if they do bring pruitt back and overhaul the staff, they're not gonna handcuff the hiring of assistants like they did with Fulmer, Dooley and Butch.

him staying means they're hitching their wagon to pruitt's success. they don't need to set him up to fail. that box is already checked.
Exactly. Keeping Pruitt is doomed to failure regardless of who you bring in for him. If they are too dumb or mule-headed to see this, they deserve the consequences and I want to keep it as cheap as possible.

Atlanta is 1.5 hours away with western Georgia being closer. The Florida panhandle is 3 hours away. Charlotte is closer to Knoxville but only by 2 hours.

Most of our talent in TN is in the two grand divisions in the western part of the state.

Charlotte may only be 2 hours closer, but Atlanta is only about 1 hour closer to Auburn, AL than Knoxville. And they have share their instate talent with Bama. They might have a geographical edge when you break it down line item, but that edge is marginal. The only significant edge they have over us is recent success.

I really think the game has passed up Chaney. His offense was great in the mid 2000s. But, he loves to draw up long-developing routes without an elite O-line or elite WRs. You have to have those for that to work. We also run a lot of routes where we catch the ball at a stop.

Today, you have to use motion, mis-direction to confuse the defense even for a split second. You need quick throws to get the ball to your playmakers in space to avoid sacks. Drags, rub routes, slants, crosses. Let our receivers catch the ball on the run. Instead we run mostly hitches

The slow developing plays kill me. On Bailey’s sack fumble, you had a pulling guard coming out to pick up an edge rusher and the play-fake right in Bailey’s field of vision, and the play side routes were two deep post routes.

Everything about the design of that play was a disaster, and people are like “he should have gotten it out quicker.” If he had, there was nowhere to go (when he started to throw, they were just starting to break their routes), aside from chucking it out of bounds, which is what we probably would have done had we not been playing head games with him and Shrout playing “make a mistake and you get yanked” musical chairs with the QB. The only thinkg I can think happened was 1) one of those WRs ran the wrong route or 2) someone was supposed to drag across the middle and that didn’t happen.

Nevertheless, seems like a lot of f@#$$ing moving parts for a freshman who adjusting to the speed of the SEC, or even with Shrout that is struggling to make multiple reads because his development was stunted with JG siphoning up reps for 8 damned years it seems.

Yea i mean that makes more sense and i wasn’t trying to attack you... i guess it’s harder for me to stomach Bc i seen first hand how Pruitt was handed every single thing he could possibly need to succeed here... much more than Dooley or butch ever had and still managed to screw it up time and time again.

Also, The whole covid excuse that they keep trying to point to is also sickening to me as well because it doesn’t add up. If we had been bad at the first of the year due to missed practices and such but got better fine. But we looked better early and just absolutely fell apart and got worse every week as the season went on. So that just totally shoots that excuse down the drain.
no worries.
i think covid, while everyone had to deal with it, was a bad draw for this staff, and this roster. considering that the best accumulation of talent on the roster was FR and SO, missing THIS off season wasn't ideal, and i think that is one thing that separates us from some other programs in terms of the "everybody had to deal with it" take.

QB's in particular....detrimental to the whole room to not have a spring/summer and fall competition.

still, doesn't excuse the personnel decisions made as a result, as the season went a long....

as for the assistants, i would look for that to continue if they retain pruitt. they don't need to hand cuff him, like they did fulmer, doolely and butch. if he's kept, they're going to give him every opportunity to succeed....again. don't need to set him up for failure with 2 losing seasons in your first 3.

That’s what will probably happen if he stays. A bunch of guys over their head that will be yes men costing Tennessee more money than firing Pruitt now
