Before I get the typical VolNation backlash for people who skim a message, I am NOT recommending this. I am 1) Asking if this has ever happened and 2)Asking if this could work with the right personalities.
What if Pruitt is out as HC...he's fed up, he doesn't want to be head coach anymore. But, he (unlike some of us) see a lot of potential on the defensive side of the ball and wants to finish what he started. Could you see a situation where he steps back to DC (and defensive play caller), Garner comes in as a DL coach, Steele as ILB, and Ansley remains Co-DC and focuses on DBs. Then you hire your CEO head coach like Marrone. Has a HC ever stepped back to a coordinator role the following year? Obviously a pipe dream but what if Pruitt, Ansley, and Steele are going out there to say we will be there next year.
This thought started when the Pruitt to Texas rumors started. I thought...Pruitt's family is settled down in Knoxville at this point and he'd just be going to a DC job with new kids. Why couldn't he stay with kids he recruited? Are egos the only thing that get in the way of that? Looking for a sincere response but expecting I'll be blasted fOR RecCOmEnDiNG CoRNbrEaD poSsIBly sTaY.
