I guess my point is that any team can beat any team on a given day. Look at Georgia State-Tennessee. If you played that game 12 times, Tennessee probably wins 11/12.
So yes, culture and pride are important, but at the end of the day, I believe talent is more important to win at a high level in the SEC. But obviously you need both.
Good rule of thumb ...If you play for a team that plays in a rivalry game that carries a title like the “Red River Shootout” “The Iron Bowl” “ The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” etc.... and you get up and leave for the other school in that rivalry, you’re a front running bitch. If you’re a former teammate of his and will likely face him on the playing field and you publicly wish him well, calling him “family” after he goes to your biggest rival.....you’re worse. I don’t care what generation you are or what kids are like these days or who played with whom in AAU ball, it doesn’t change you from being what you are.
Ron Slay is a national treasure
It's kind of a chicken or egg thing, I think.
If we recruited better players, my belief is those players would win. Once we start winning, pride comes back.
It's all about talent.
Thing is that Tennessee is at the point where they’re gonna have to have an HC that proves he can win some with what he’s got before he can attract the types of recruits you are talking about. But this is not new, it’s been like that for 15 years. This is why I was hoping for Petersen when they got Kiffin. Campbell is doing it, Franklin did it at Vandy. Coaches like that are rare, but they’re out there. Hopefully Huepel is that type of coach, it’s really our only hope.
We had our chance to stabilize things when we fired Fulmer. Gary Patterson wanted the job. Hamilton thought he was too much like Fulmer. And here we are, well over a decade later, still wandering in the wilderness and staring 20 straight losses to our biggest “rival” in the face. Our only hope, as you said, is to back into an up and comer who turns out to be really good.
I mean… technically they should lose their Vol card for the moment they put that stuff on…. But yeah….I'll be jumping up and down happy if my kids have SEC offers for whatever sport they play.. world class institutions from top to bottom.. I don;t think anyone is losing their Vol card for having to wear a UGA Uf or UA hat on Saturdays to support their kids..
I mean.. If my wife walks out on me thinking she can do better & ends up with my nemesis you think I’m gonna be congratulating her? Hell nah. I get both angles but at the end of day some kids have passion for the university they play for and some kids don’t. We haven’t been relevant since the 90’s and the last time we had any sort of rivalry was when Lane ran the score up on UGA. (Muschamp hated us more than spurrier but I don’t count that) I can almost guarantee that the third Saturday in fall won’t be so glorious for Too’Too.
