The fight song for Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (Tennessee Tech University today), was written and copyrighted in the mid-1950's. The band director at the time, a WWII veteran and native of tiny Silver Point, TN, was the writer of the song. He was also a TTU alumnus and a faculty member at the time.
It was after this time the director left TTU to assume the band director position at UT, a role he would hold for over 30 years. The man's name is Dr. WJ Julian. Notable accomplishments under Dr. Julian's direction include the uniforms which he designed, the circle drill, and the forming/opening of the "T" for the football team. We can also thank him for introducing "Rocky Top" to fans in Neyland (minus the "woo").
Football traditions as we know it wouldn't be the same without his direction. I would be remiss if I didn't say I am proud a fellow Putnam Countian and alumnus of Tennessee Tech has made such valuable contributions to our beloved Vols.
And now you know...the rest of the story.
