On the last possession of regulation, we were trying to get a TD or a 15-yard penalty (to get into FG range) on those two long pass plays. We knew that we were going to beat them long or they would have to commit interference to prevent the score. The refs had been flag happy all game for DPI, it had been reinforced all game that if you throw it up, it's gonna be a flag or a big play. Purdue actually did commit holding/DPI but the refs didn't throw the flag.
We were trying to be too smart and put the game in the refs' hands. It wasn't a bad play call. It should have been flagged. If they wouldn't have held we would have scored. But for whatever reason the refs weren't going to throw the flag. Maybe it was to let the teams play it out?
Well letting them play it out flew right out the damn window in overtime but whatever.
Point is - we had three timeouts and enough time to run whatever we wanted to get in FG range. We should have just been methodical and got into FG range the old fashioned way instead of saying "well, hey, if they like throwing flags, let's let 'em throw some flags."
Easier to say in hindsight because it absolutely was a penalty on at least one of our long passes to end the game. But we'll never know why a penalty wasn't called and we'll never know why the ref was so eager to blow the play dead in OT.
