You have to account for the fact that our offense also makes it significantly tougher on our defense. They are on the field a ton in both time and plays given how fast our offense goes. With a distinct lack of quality depth on all 3 phases, that's a tough ask.

The only thing that is concerning/ needs a major fix is third down and fourth down defense. We gave up so many long third downs this year. That was in large part due to lack of talent from pass rushers and linebackers (QB runs up the middle). Scheme also had a major role in that I would suspect.

Fix third downs and this defense goes from not great to pretty darn serviceable. That's all they need to be for us to win a lot of games.

You'll seldom do that when you consistently rush 3 or four. That's my biggest disappointment was we knew we were undermanned and seldom challenged the offense. When you're short handed, you need to gamble. Instead we allowed virtually all the teams played to methodically March it down the field. Given that we score quickly, the defense gives up a couple of long, time consuming drives and the defense spent by the end of the first qtr.

1. ALL good coaches self scout and self evaluate, especially in the Off Season. No one wants to improve more than they do.
2. ALL good coaches continue to study the game and seek to learn and grow if they have any longevity in the game. (37 years in, still studying, talking to other coaches ,etc.)

4. WB is a VFL. He didn't play well, but he played his ass off not knowing what he was or wasn't allowed to do based on the officiating. Those who are trashing him on here need to check themselves. Have know Coach Martinez for years and he will get these guys better.

You need to call him up and get us some good recruiting nugs. Who we looking at in the portal, other than Verse? Surely we're chasing some secondary.

Offense - option formations to help with short yardage run plays.

Defense - Whole secondary, need more speed.

I didn't see the stat for TFL but it sounds like we were good there so we've got that going for us.

We literally sucked at every meaningful defensive category that I could find. We couldn't stop the run. We couldn't stop the pass. We couldnt sack the QB. We couldn't get off the field on 3rd down or 4th down. I can't believe the excuses that you guys have for Banks. It as Sunseri level bad. Vandy was statistically better, significantly, on many of these stats.

I'm not calling for the guy to be fired but tied ignore how pathetic this defense was is burying your head in the sand.

I am coming around to this line of thinking. I am hopeful another year in the system will help some. Need some more dudes. Need a more aggressive scheme. Not at all out on Banks yet.

The defense got worse as the season progressed. They were effective early, although not great, which was a surprise. They ended this season being pretty terrible, which is what everyone expected to see all season. We just have to hope that depth and lack of talent are to blame. We'll see next season. I'm not ready to throw in the towel on Banks. He was working with a skeleton crew at LB all season and I think that really hurt the defense more than anything else.

This is why we hired an offensive minded coach lol. Banks had nothing to work with this year. He definitely deserves a year 2 here. Just need more bodies and better talent. LB position was by far the worst. Especially in pass coverage. Gotta have elite LBs in SEC and we ar far from that haha.
