I hear you. If you were the DC what would be your plan for improvement in 2022? Just curious.. I like talking shop even though I’m by no means a coach or expert.
First, I would probably see if Jalen Hyatt could cover another receiver.
GBO!!

Just thinking back on the season, we need better line play on both sides of the ball. Both sides struggle with consistently getting a good push IMO. A good off season in the weight room should help that. Hopefully.

After the bowl game, I'm convinced secondary is our biggest weakness. I really hope we take some portal DBs.

And I'm still hoping Verse picks us. Would be nice if he announced soon.
At this point I’m having a chicken and egg conundrum. Do our DBs look awful because they have to cover for so long or can our pass rush not get there because WRs get open too quickly.

Idk probably both. Defense needs an infusion of talent in a baaaaad way.

we 'struggled' against the 6 teams who had veteran players and depth. I mean if you think about, Matthew Butler played 80+ snaps a game. Think about that.

How can you expect a defense to hold these offenses, esp well coached like Saban's, Kiff's, and Brohm's to any sort of in check? You cant blitz, QB sees it all day. Line cant get a push. If you do blitz or play zone, they throw over middle and you get torched.

So im not sure why people demonize Banks. The guy is a helluva coordinator. Granted we stunk it up against Purdue, they did hold to three FG's and had two INT's.
Two interceptions against a QB that threw 0 all year.

I will also say this, one area the defense can really improve (at all levels) is tackling. When we get to the ball carrier we need to bring them down, and not just dropping the head and trying to blow them up.

Much rather see us wrapping up and running through runners.

Yep, they have a 225lb RB like Purdue and you see what he did... I am so sick of us not having a big RB who can pound the rock up the middle. The Purdue kid was probably like a 2* and ran over us all day... No matter who the coach is for UT, they won't get a big RB... I was so excited to get Crouch, thinking he would eventually split time, but no... Beckwith is the closest thing we have, but everyone says he's afraid to get hit? Go find me a hungry big RB that's a 2-3* and I guarantee he will be valuable...
Tyon Evans was a big back. He skedaddled. Kid from Maryville was a big back. Couldnt find the field.

Yea, I didn’t want to go back and watch. But I recall that we blitzed several times and still couldn’t get there.
our blitzes were wide and time consuming the real problem was no push in the middle area and no stunting at all that I saw. pitch and catch

One thing I noticed in the bowl game as the game went on, it stopped being so much about the tackle and they seemed to focus more on trying to strip the ball. I didn't like that. If the strip is there, fine, but stopping the runner should always be first priority.

I'd ask for some help. Seriously, I'd hire an analyst just to study every team we play next year and see what schemes were effective against them. Personally I'd study schemes from the best defenses, not necessarily teams like GA or Alabama but teams that seem to be able to get more from less. I'd look at innovative coaches. When your outmaned you have to overachieve, play above your billing. This is exactly what we've seen from Heupel's offense.

And we somehow got the one Big 10 team that doesn't play this style of slow/run first ball.

I am still pissed Purdue won and the refs hosed us, but that damn QB they got is the real deal. Walk-on or 8th string be damned Brohm has turned him into a damn good QB.
I think everyone knew that all year. His 3rd year. Threw for 3,712 yards this senior season. The announcers took the angle they did to intentionally mislead their audience. Didn't appear to know all the players we lost in the portal or anything about Cade, AT, or Evans. Same ole same ole.

Made it sound like their top 7 QBs all went down at practice on Tuesday😄. Had to pull a guy off the badminton team at the last second.

Sloppy field conditions really took away our quickness edge on the dline. Also being a sluggish game it masks holding calls on the los. Fast track and I believe it would have been a different outcome
MCB and whoever runs that stadium for these events should be ashamed of themselves with the condition that field was in.

We were 117th in first downs allowed
We were 120th in red zone defense
We were 122nd in passing yards allowed
We were 60 (woo hoo) in rushing defense
We were tied for 32nd about 10 other teams for interceptions.
We were 103 in 3rd down defense
We were tied for 54th in 4th down stops
We were tied for 42nd in sacks
We were tied for 103 in recovered fumbles
We were tied for 90th in scoring defense
We were tied 98th for total defense

I didn't see the stat for TFL but it sounds like we were good there so we've got that going for us.

We literally sucked at every meaningful defensive category that I could find. We couldn't stop the run. We couldn't stop the pass. We couldnt sack the QB. We couldn't get off the field on 3rd down or 4th down. I can't believe the excuses that you guys have for Banks. It as Sunseri level bad. Vandy was statistically better, significantly, on many of these stats.

I'm not calling for the guy to be fired but tied ignore how pathetic this defense was is burying your head in the sand.
So we were what everyone said we would be with the depleted roster? They said we would win 4 to 5 games with the talent we had, and yet we could have won 9 to 10 if not for calls. How many games should we have had a chance to win with those stats? Sometimes stats are not everything and not putting your focus there is not sticking your head in the sand.
