The purpose isn't just explosive plays. It's also about catching the defense off guard; not giving them time to adjust, shift, substitute, etc.
Yes that needs to be a point of emphasis is this offense is not the best for 20 yard line in and I think backs and te need to be utilized more effectively along with a banger for the short runs. 2 biggest short falls. How many games we need 1 or 2 yards to really get it going and not get it?

I'd like to see how you act after a 350 pound lineman falls on top of your ankle with all of his weight.
He just had his trainers carry him off with no pressure on his leg. As soon as he got to the sideline, he walked to the tent. I now see he’s being carted off to the locker room just like the Auburn game. I really hope he’s not injured as the kid is tough as nails. But I’m just saying he likes the dramatic effect and plays into it well.

I ignored the question because it has nothing to do with whether this defense was acceptable given the roster. I did play and I played multiple positions. I can tell I also do math and physics. 4 vs 6 isn't a winning combination. We rushed 4 90% of the time. We seldom even hurried the QB. We ranked statistically as one of the worse defenses in all of football. We continued to do the same thing over and over and saw no improvement, actually got worse as the season went on.

If you're counting on a huge influx of talent the class just signed is on par with what we've had in the past few years taking into account transfers. From a talent standpoint we're not going to be much better on defense. Maybe some transfers in will help, but from a talent standpoint we won't be much better. If we're relying on talent to improve the defense, we're in for a long few years. Maybe Heupel can outscore everyone.
My opinion we rushed 4 to cover for the weakness of our safeties, neither of which have to speed not skillset for SEC. basically teh defense did not have a difference maker or a person the offense had to account for, If you blitzed more, it increases the probability of a big play. Banks was bend but don't break to try to make the QB's beat us. Think it would be interesting to see if it was him or one of his assistants who suggested the blitzes at the end of the Kentucky game. As far as the digression at the end of the season, that was a combination of scheme, injuries and complete lack of depth as players were just worn out.

LOL and they trailed in the 4th quarter in both.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love an actual 10-win season (I’m open to claiming 10 wins this season)… but UK is still UK.

They won 10 games because of their schedule. They played an imploding Fl team, a down LSU who fired their coach, and a crappy Louisville team. We played the ACC champs, Ole Miss, and Bama and we beat them head to head. They are a product of their schedule.

That being said, Stoops has done a good job there. We need to show the same patience with Heupel while he builds us back

So is he tough as nails or a drama queen?

I expect the new staff and AD expect to win now.

However, in another couple of years you will see a very strong and deep team fielded by CJH that will be competing for Championships.

Getting the D shored up with playmakers now and developing the existing core will pay dividends next year.

Stay tuned - Go Vols !

He took over a dumpster fire Kentucky team that was dead. They were patient with him and what he’s built is impressive.

I’m not suggesting he’s some great coach or that Kentucky is amazing. But what they are doing is impressive. They’re a better program than we are right now and that sucks to say. Better seasons. Better bowl games. Better recruiting classes.

I was bummed after our MCB performance but I trust in Heupel and I think he’ll get us turned around. But IMO we’d be lucky to have a ten win season in the next couple years.

Kentucky was good this year. They’re gonna be good next year. What used to be a gimme game for us is now a stress game. Sure we’ve won most of our recent ones but too many times they go to the wire. Goal line stand two years ago. Crazy sequence to end this year. Etc.

IMO Tennessee fans refusing to give them credit or dismiss what they’ve done is foolish.
Right on. I was hoping Stoops would take another job. A lot of folks on here will attempt to discredit anything and everything that a rival program may have going for them. The only program that’s on the uptick is the one in Knoxville, and everybody else is a fraud. Too bad that’s not reality. Kentucky will be tough as long as he’s there.

Context is hard.
