It would just shift things. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy. The bigger the playoffs get, the more important the post-season becomes. Like March Madness...or the NFL playoffs. The regular season doesn't need to be the most important part, it's just what we're used to.
Have a bigger play-off with Byes for the Top 4 or 8, would take care of expansion and still keep regular season important

I still think about these two drives from the MCB:

Early in the 2nd quarter. We had just held Purdue to 3 points to stay up 21-10. Felt like if we score another TD on this drive we choke them out the same way that we did Mizzou and SCar.

We cross midfield after a long pass play. We are in their territory and in striking distance.

1st down: run for 4
2nd down: long pass for Tillman, incomplete, lead him too far. Flagged for HOLDING on Carvin.
2nd down & 22: pass to the sideline, through the hands of Fant. Would have set up 3rd and 10, but he didn't catch it.
3rd down & 22: bomb to no one
PUNT

Next Purdue drive we hold them to another 3.

Our next drive, another chance to score to put some distance in between us and them. We cross midfield AGAIN. 8:00 left.

Key moment:

It was a quick out on the perimeter to Peyton. It's a play we've scored on before, particularly against slower defenses. It would have absolutely got us the 1st down, it may have scored. HE DROPS IT.

All of that, and STILL we pick up the 1st.

Key moment:

3rd & 4 on that same drive. Velus blows by his man in the slot. Just dusts him. Hooker underthrows it to the outside, so Velus has to adjust. Even still, it was a catchable ball.
4th & 4: we get a false start
4th & 9: Hooker gets pressured outside of the pocket. Tillman streaks to the endzone on the play breakdown, but Hooker has no idea where he's going, or just throws a terrible ball, and misses the scoring opportunity.

This 2nd quarter was not unlike many other 2nd quarters we had this season. The defense was not exceptionally bad. The offense WAS moving the ball. However, greed and lack of execution cost us AT LEAST 7 points, possibly as many as 14, and that probably would have been enough to make the game ours.

If we're going to have big balls, or get addicted to big plays, that's fine. I applaud our aggression. But you better execute.

And yet...45....Forty FREAKING Five..

The bent officials and the defense in that order are why we lost that game...not the offense, the fact that we could have scored 70 on them with better execution is irrelevant. If your offense hangs close to half a hunnert on them...you should win every freaking time.

A coach friend of mine and I we’re talking about this the other day. It really does look like Chaney is still running that offense.
They believe in heavy personnel packages and they have the body types to do it. That’s tough to defend. God forbid they ever get a legit QB and keep him

The officiating really did us in. I keep trying to apply football principles to the game but it really didn't matter.

We win that game 19/20 times. I just hope it was a learning experience for Heupel, the staff, and the players.

Honestly, probably will be the smarter play long term. Once you're putting folks in the NFL the talent ya want won't care as much about the NIL deals upfront. Sure they seem nice, but being drafted in the 1st round will dwarf most NIL deals money.

And with the 1 free transfer you'll see more and more HS kids take advantage of teams/boosters like Ewers did Ohio State and less and less money folks will want to invest in fickle teenagers.
Problem is they'll get both. They'll get a huge sum of money up front and then still go to the NFL. This is more money than most of their families will see in a life time. Don't forget the NFL is no guarantee. Even uber talented guys don't make it for whatever reason. Some get hurt, career ending. The majority of the elite players are going to go where they can get huge NIL deals.

But we're not behind on NIL...

Unless the NCAA takes action, which I highly doubt, this will continue to happen, and other programs will follow suit. Nothing I've seen thus far suggests we have boosters willing to step up and do the same, or even come close to the same level. It is what it is. I'm not saying we suck at NIL, but some people are pretending that we can compete with these other programs, and I've yet to see anything that suggests we can. That's the difference between being top tier and mid-tier.

That's what I've been saying. Tennessee has no desire to swim on those waters. Very few reasons to.

I’m as pissed as anyone about the refs and inability / lack of clock management / lack of execution on the final regulation drive — but this ^^^^ is where we lost the MCB.
They did not help, for sure. We left quite a few points on the field. My biggest issue was not kicking a FG when we were up 31-30. I looked back and it was a 4th and 1 at the Purdue 24, so probably not a bad call. Those 3 points would have been huge at the end, though.

What are they supposed to learn? That when the other team throws up a prayer on third and fourth down that the bent ref will call PI or some other 🦬💩 call against the defense...therefore extending four-six drives that ended with points that otherwise were dead?

What exactly do you learn from that?

$30MM #1 class. Wow.

TAMU did exactly what many of us said we should do - but their bigtime donors (not just us lowly RF folks) also thought of it...and actually did it.

Once Texas figures this out, game over

They and A&M will rule the SEC

Yet some posters act offended when pointed out we are clearly behind other programs in regard to NIL. They continue to deny we are behind.

Also, just another note on this:

The next two games with the highest amount of penalty yards after the ACC games.. Bama and UF 🧐

UF game: 85 penalty yards. UF only had 45.
Bama game: 98 penalty yards. Bama only had 30.

We averaged 37 yards/game outside of those 4 games.
That's why I say it is hard to believe that there is not a conscious concerted effort to keep us down.

That Sankey turning a blind eye to it happening to a conference team proves that he works for our cross-division regular opponent and is rigging (in this case by inaction) the league. Oh wait, you said learn not confirm. I guess no need to mention the uncalled OL holding on the same plays. You good.
