To be fair we probably need 35+ or so to even hit the 85 next year (after graduation/draft/transfer attrition). We went into the bowl game with 60-65 scholarship players available.

Per LWSVOL's post "Look at 2022 Roster" on the FF, we went in to the bowl game with 67 - Kameen Marley so 66. In those 66 are another 8 that have to decide whether they're staying or moving on. The rest have already announced they are returning. I thought the same thing you did, until Larry put that out. Basically we have to assume most of those are leaving or we have transfers to make room for even the numbers I mentioned in my OP.

I mean if Jim goes to the Bears, Michigan can snatch up Stoops from Kentucky.

WTF you trying to do to me? 😫

Edit: Still on the Bears…nm.

I mean, I'm okay if the Bears want to hire Stoops, or Smart, or Jimbo, or Saban. Hell, let them hire all of them.

That 66 include guys sitting out for injury related reasons?

Yeah ya always play it as losing EVERYONE and then work around anyone that decides to stay. Cause regardless of the culture shift we'll still lose some to the portal before Fall.

As for our boosters…. I don’t blame them for being hesitant with as much of their money UT has wasted over the years…. Look at baseball…. TV gave everyone a reason to be excited and more money flew into that program than had happened in years. We have one of the best ADs in the country…. It feels like everyone is starting to push in the same direction…. All of our programs appear to be growing and headed in the right direction…. I’m excited about UT athletics for the first time in years.

Agreed, remember just a year ago tens of thousands, most likely hundreds of thousands of dollars got thrown at recruits supposedly to secure their commitments. Pruitt got crawfished by an entire group of players. It was embarrassing and from what I heard it pissed enough money people off they were done with Pruitt. Pruitt let his ego believe all you had to do was throw money at recruits to get them here.

If Banks leaves, I want us to throw the brinks truck at a true and proven defensive coordinator. Our offense paired with an elite defense would be so tough for opposing teams. We need to find our Dave Aranda
I do not think Banks is leaving, but before offering job to Banks Heupel offered job to Bryan Brown. Brown’s defenses at Louisville have been awful. Hopefully we do not go that route.

Yes, it was total scholarship players with eligibility remaining.

Interesting. He built up Stanford and took the 49ers to the SB but when you look at him in interviews his heart doesn’t seem to be in it…

We aren't the only ones playing with numbers. Portal is about to get poppin.
Ironically enough, we should actually be in am enviable numbers situation this year due to losing so many last year.

Most teams will be struggling to get below 86 considering how many "super" class kids they have. If the NCAA doesn't make another exception year, we can find some very good late pickups when many other schools don't have room.

Good time for the scumbag to leave. Stoop(id)s peaked this year winning a nail-biter in a bowl he didn't deserve to be in against the worst team to appear in the bowl's history.

Bud Elliott was hinting at the possibility of more roster changes/rules considering we'll have these Covid "super senior" impacts through 2024.

Wouldn't a simple (helpful...but not a pure fix) way to help with parity be to expand seasons of playing from 4 to 5?

One theory as to what may have helped parity this year (2 newcomers to the playoffs) were all the "super" class players. This helped teams with middle talent to have a more veteran team than normal. Michigan finally overcame the more talented OSU...Cincy was the first ever G5 team in the playoffs. The top teams would still lose a bunch of talent to the draft each year, as usual.

If we expanded the number of seasons to 5 permanently, then you'd have more veteran teams that could challenge these young, but very talented, teams and inject more parity into the game.

It could easily be sold (by the vast majority vote of non-elite programs) as both increasing "competitive balance" (as they call it), but also helping kids get more graduate degrees.
