Shouldn't the hot board and priorities be set by the coaching staff? That sounds more like an indictment of Banks (or the position coaches) than the support staff guys. If the coaches are having a hard time identifying the guys they want because the support staff isn't doing a good job of vetting and presenting options, that would be a problem too. Of course they could just ask VN. We have many experts here with large monitors, cherry wood desks, and cordovan leather chairs.
I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

If we are self imposing 10, that is a massive mistake, IMO. We are going to hurt ourselves for several years by doing that.

You do realize it’s the 85 number not the signing class. I assume we used some of the reduction this year while numbers were low already. You can recruit 25 a year and have more than 85. So no it’s not going to hurt for several years lol

There are so many on here who mistake opinion for fact.

We don’t know that the administration is self-imposing 10 scholarships this year, but many assume it because of someone’s opinion on here.

We don’t know what the defensive recruiting philosophy, but because Hubbs thinks they don’t have an official defensive “hot board” many assume that everyone is lost and doesn’t know what they’re doing.

But @frank loves a good rumor because it just means more posts and page views to help stock his Scrooge McDuck coffers.

Gigantor..my fav show as a kid. Could not wait to get home and watch him wreck some fools.

I had to look up what Gigantor was but once I did I kinda recognized it from a documentary we watched on Marvel. I can't remember the name of the doc now but it was really good and had a big section on Ladd and his time in Japan.

Yeah, it sounds like excuse-making to me.
It sounds like an administration who is too entangled with academics and wants their image to be better. It doesn’t seem like an administration that cares about championships. It cares about experience and the appearance of wanting to win. I think they are content with 7-8 win seasons and don’t want to try to be a force like Bama and UGA.

Couple of thoughts here:

1. really hard to tell a early enrollee we want you him back in the summer or fall but not in January. In my opinion it's hard to sign a kid if you tell him that. However, by taking so many early enrollee guys they are in a January numbers pinch. Now if a guy didn't want to be an early enrollee and you talked him into it then that's a different story (I'm not aware of that scenario).

Why the numbers pinch? There are a variety of things happening here. Some thoughts on that and more.

1. Self imposed penalties. Are you going to divide it out over multiple years? You going to rip the band aid off at once, get it behind you and move on with full numbers? Certainly debatable on how to do that. Feels like Tennessee is ripping the band aid off. Could they change course with that and turn it into multi-year restrictions. I would think that's possible.

2. How many is leaving your program? Could it be that you felt like more were leaving than left? Did some guys decide to stay after this fall? I thought J. Williams was leaving and he's staying at linebacker. Latrell Bumphus was a senior so there was a number. But he was able to redshirt (a decision made Kentucky week). Is getting him back for another year better than a transfer? Everyone can debate that as they want. What if a kid doesn't want to leave till May because he's a semester from graduating? You telling him he has to go lose some transfer credits and maybe have to talk another semester to graduate? Scholarships are one year deals. So guys have to voluntarily withdraw. Marley left but I don't think in good enough standing to get his number back. As I always say numbers are fluid which is why it's been hard to give you guys a hard number.

3. Not landing Gilbert or Scott as a juco DB changed the DB needs as well. Land one of those and the dire need for a DB transfer is a little different. Also, horrible play at corner in the bowl game changed the outlook at that position in the minds of all of us.

4. The challenges of the portal. It's clear that some guys know where they are going when the enter the portal. Tennessee swung hard on Verse and missed. They didn't land him and also missed on a couple other HS kids at that spot like Agu. There were some other guys in the portal that Tennessee has simply not liked. Right call? Time will tell. There were some who simply had no interest in Tennessee.

5. Other schools like Florida, LSU, USC, Oklahoma have more room. Why? No penalties. Lots more players leaving the program and they signed small numbers in December -- Oklahoma signed 17, Florida 12, USC 8, LSU 13.

Now before some of you jump in here and say crap like CWS just got owned, blah, blah. No he didn't. He's made a point that is worth looking at and examining. He's right in that some of the offensive linemen aren't going to be guys who provide immediate help.

Others are right in that this is a marathon not a sprint. Vols aren't winning the SEC East in 2022. So there is selectiveness in the portal guys. Vols have liked some and couldn't get in the door. Others they haven't liked. Have they made mistakes? Maybe. Time will tell. It's a tough call for coaches. You don't want to look up and see a guy having a huge impact somewhere and say we should have tried to go on him. You also don't want to look out on your practice field and say dang we cost ourself someone by taking a guy who can't help.

I kinda like the idea of going ahead and ripping the band-aid off right now, all things considered. It’s still early in Huepel’s tenure. Also, with the NIL and portal, I don’t think it would cause nearly the kind of long term impact that such a move once would have.

When did the "1980" joke become a thing? Surely it was not much earlier than 2010. By then it was 30 years and seemed a significant amount of time. 1980 sounded really far away. By 2020 it was like ancient times...40 years ago.

Just curious how many years until "1998" becomes a thing. Thinking we still have at least 7 more years...

Yeah I think the hot board thing is weird outside of the issue that we fired everyone and this staff was starting from scratch or based on what they had from other places. That may have been the issue more than having no idea what we were doing. I think our previous decade and ncaa investigation was more the problem.

Possibly true! Why should fans care as much?

It’s already a thing now.. we’re at or near the back of the “Bigtime” SEC schools in terms of the last time we’ve won a national championship. Can thank the wonderful administration over the years for that. Look forward to “doing it the right way” while Aggie, Bammer, Dawgs, Gators, LSU go full force on this NIL and facilities thing…. At least our academics will be the best outside of Vanderbilt!

Dang gators added Bateman former UNC and Army DC as ILB coach. Yes his defense sucked this year but was solid before that and he can recruit. Stout get as assistant. Napier has an elite defensive coaching staff. Offensively……..well that is to be determined especially considering he thinks he is a QB guru all of a sudden

i can tell you as an ETSU alum, let the other schools be academies of higher learning. just win.

Frankly no I don’t care about cheating. Because it goes on. Always has and always will. Do I wish TN could be this squeaky clean program that really sets a great standard? Absolutely. But let’s face it, can we do that and win? No we can’t.

Fans attitude towards cheating has absolutely zero effect on its continuing. Cheating is a part of college football. I just want us to win.
Fans attitude does count on the elimination of cheating. Attendance is falling at most schools. Even Alabama has empty seats now. I have hope in Plowman exposing the standard operating procedures in the SEC. It is time for the game to have some credibility.

Was told by many that we backed off on Agu when Pearce signed. 🤔

I agree.. the fans don’t give a $hit about doing anything the “right way” they just want to win.
i care, but we've tried that.

again rome wasn't built overnight. we've made a lot of strides... cant expect to be sec title contender Thanos style.

like losing weight first 10 is easy, second 10 is whole helluva lot harder.

last time I was in atlanta watching Ainge, Ainge. I was in my twenties. 🤦🏼‍♂️
