The real problem is defense. People can skate around it all they want, but the offense puts up the numbers to win. Defense tends to crap the bed. I think Tim Banks did a good job with what he had, but we NEED more on that side of the ball, thus my harping on the subject that causes everyone to bitch at me. Our defense has been our biggest weakness, and we've done very little to address it. Yes, we made some good pickups in this class, but it's rare to see a freshman come in and contribute at a high level immediately. We needed some portal pickups at key positions to solidify the defense, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen, at least not until after Spring, and I'm not as optimistic as everyone else seems to be on the level of talent we'll see at that time. I really hope I'm wrong.

The Defense reminds me of an old golf joke:

Joe Am: "Hey Pro. Why do I slice every drive?"
Pro: "Loft."

Joe Am: "Hey Pro. Why do I top my iron shots?"
Pro: "Loft."

Joe Am: "Hey Pro. Why do I shank every pitch shot?"
Pro: "Loft."

Joe Am: "Hey Pro. How can 'Loft' be the issue for everything?"
Pro: "Lack Of Fu&*ing Talent."

Everyone needs to be better, I'm not arguing that at all. But in CFB the biggest separation between good and great teams is really good QB play. If everyone else stays the same but Hooker improves this team can win 10.

So you think Stetson Bennett is the difference for GA? It wasn't their amazing defense or road grading linemen?

I don't think Stetson was elite, but at the same time he didn't make big mistakes, put people in the right positions to make plays, hit the WRs when he needed, didn't take bad sacks and didn't turn the ball over much. Basically managed the game well and didn't put his team in bad positions. The team didn't need him to be elite as they were elite on D, had a good OL and good RBs.

Hold the phone. I understand that we need more players that are better than what we have now but who doesn't. CJH and his staff meet and exceeded all of our expectations (except VolsDoc81TX) with what everyone on here thought was a team of left overs and misfits. We were literally a hand full of plays and or calls away from winning 10 games......think about that for a second.

I really think that the way they are going about this recruiting thing is smart, hear me out, We have no idea how this NIL thing is going to play out and slow rolling it may not be popular but in the end may be the smart move . I also think the Stars by a name doesn't carry as much weight with this staff because they are looking for character as much as they are talent and the talent has to fit the system.

Every year from now until the NIL is in it's final form is going to be nothing more than a free agent bidding war and I'm not convinced that this Staff, AD or Administration think that is the way to go at this point.

Another honest question. In what game or what particular throw did Hooker do something that gives all this confidence in him? He made the throws that were there I'm not trying to take anything away from him, but most of the plays made were because the recievers were schemed wide open, or tempo and the DB just got burnt. When did he throw guys open or hit a guy in tight coverage, the big throws that need to be made in order to beat some of the better teams on our schedule? Honestly not trolling just trying to understand what others saw
You make it so difficult for me to hold firm on not putting anyone on ignore.

You are so tiring!!

The offense is built to scheme guys wide open and run the ball period.... Hooker sure as heck beats someone who can't hit the wide open target like some of the guys we've trotted out there in the last few years (i.e.- Guarantano, Milton(he could improve), Dormandy). On top of that he can make things happen with his legs so there's that too

Wrong. I don’t care how good your QB is, if your OL doesn’t do it’s job, then you aren’t winning big. You think if Trevor Lawrence played for us he would have been in the Heisman race and we would have won 10 games? No. Until our OL steps up significantly, we will be stuck in the 7-9 win range. The great teams win big because of great QB play AND great OL/DL play.

If you look at the guys we signed that are OL we should all see a pattern because not every OL prospect in the country could play in this offense. They need to be guick, fast and be in shape to go as fast as we do. The big strong slower guy's just can't do it over the course of a game much less a season. These OL recruits fit the bill but want be ready for a year or two and that is something we have all got to be patient with. Defense, I have no idea what the plan is there.
I'll take my SKITTLE now and watch the squirrels chase each other around the yard.

Gave up an average of 10.2 ppg on defense. In a season where the top 52 offenses scored 30+ ppg. With the #26 in total O that was given short fields to work with the vast majority of the time. All while being behind even us at #49 in turnover margin.

Absolute studs on both sides of the lines and defense in general.

smh at the thought processes sometimes.

Right. The question was directed to the guy insisting that great teams are only so because of great QB play, which clearly wasn't the case for the team that won the NC.

Our biggest issue was depth….. if the guys that weren’t ready last year can give us minutes or our freshman can give adequate minutes off the bench then the defense will be improved.

Yeah, I tend to agree with this as well. I think our defense (more than our offense) was impacted by the lack of depth. Couldn't rotate as many fresh legs in and they were already on the field more than any other defense in the SEC.
