I think it will end up being the conferences trying to enforce the NIL rules. They will threaten to withhold TV cash to schools who they say violated the rules. Most SEC schools will be afraid to sue the conference. Too many bad things the SEC can do a member school without even tying it to possible NIL violations.

Yeah I almost see it like each conference will essentially work as its own "union"

They kind of create a tier system for how much any one player is permitted to make from a team in conference...obviously they'll want to be more competitive than the other conferences, but they will want Vandy to have just as much freedom as Bama to pay top dollar (of course we all know Vandy's boosters/donors won't do this, but that'll be the "level footing" that exist if you will)

I don't hate it...I could see essentially every SEC team saying "you're worth 800k over 3 years" and stop bidding against each other (on the NIL side of things). But you can still sweeten deals based on market and % of earnings, also something I'd be fine with. If Vandy will give you 50% on appearances and Bama only 30% (because they feel there brand is worth more) then so be it. Let the kid decide if he values a larger piece of what may end up being a smaller pie or not.

I get your points, but if everyone reads the article, it’s filled with quotes of ADs at power 5 schools like Colorado saying they are angry the NCAA isn’t prohibiting the collectives and demanding they do so. This is coming from certain schools. Membership of the Association fighting among themselves. This is likely the fight that will define what’s next with cfb (perhaps this battle will be the end of the NCAA because these crap schools like CO can’t compete and should step aside).
And Alabama. Nick Saban was meeting with state legislators.

It's certain schools attempting to force the NCAA's hand via media pressure.

I know we instantly think we are being targeted but I really think I this is targeted at the Texas/AM/Miami type collectives that are paying salaries to kids for play and attending school. Spyre in surface at least to me seems to be pushing money through actual business marketing events not simply for attending a school. They aren’t saying they are paying team or positional salaries like others. Nico deal is based on his branding potential. He legally can make money and has been doing events when in town. He isn’t sitting on his butt being handed a check.
One article specifically mentioned an 8 mil NIL deal.

Wouldn't work because Bama would end up paying more than allowed, sliding some of it beneath the table as they've always done.

Folks may or may not be aware that the NYT bought The Athletic around a year ago. About the time Ubben may have stopped selling cigarettes to children and got his promotion from cranking out hit pieces on UT.

They paid $550 million for it. Really. A sucker born every minute. So to stop the financial bleeding in a declining industry and business, they plan to enhance (could not resist) readers' experiences by adding advertisements later this year to the soon to be former no ads experiences. They plan to even bundle it with other subscriptions, presumably the NYT for one.

😂

Posting this to just let folks on here know before they subscribe or renew. Consider it a PSA.

From what has been posted on these new NCAA/NIL rules. It appears the NCAA is going to set new rules based on NIL contracts for recruits that will penalize the schools associated with the collectives instead of penalizing the players. They know they will get sued if a player is suspended so they are going to try and fine the schools enough to try and discourage them from using boosters/collectives to give NIL contracts to recruits.

This would be akin to an Engineering firm being fined for trying to recruit engineers from others firms by offering them better deals.

Both of these actions would cause the players/engineers to get less money. Any of you lawyers know if this would fly in court? Especially when most of the players are African American that would be getting less money.
From what I can tell, there's little indication from the NCAA what they plan to do. It looks like some institutions using media pressure to try to force the NCAA to do what they want.

This is similar to a few legislators showing pictures of sad children over and over, going into a vote to add political pressure for an outcome on the vote.

Never was a subscriber. I could not in good conscious support such a degenerate as Ubben, who targets and corrupts our youth with his vile cigarettes. He never stopped selling, he just expanded his operation.

Let them try to do whatever they want against the collectives, because our collective named Spyre sports has nothing in their name that connects them to Tennessee and I guarantee there’s nothing in those contracts that connects them. However, when the negotiations occur it is understood who that recruit is supposed to go and play for. The NCAA will have zero proof to do anything to us. That is why back when we were hand wringing about all of this and seeming like we were way behind, we were making sure every single I was dotted and every single T was crossed before putting this out.
The donation tiers are named after UT history and directed at UT fans. lol

Personally, I think when they start digging into this, they'll be more schools on the side of collectives than not. You just have some noisemakers, like Saban, spewing their hot air because the playing has got a little more even, when we're talking about the big boy programs.

Its funny to me that NCAA is all about even playing field, until its not. Its sooo biased as long as the checks are good, it isnt funny.

That's exactly what they are already doing. And it's not a matter of who will pay more, it's just the window dressing by the SEC for all teams to "be allowed" to pony up.
It's what they were doing. Why do you think Saban is so pissed now? It's because collectives allow for more money to be paid above board than he can get them below the table.

Saban is pissed because he got outdone. He was all smiles when discussing what BY was making in NIL money, which at the time, was considered astronomical. Spyre comes along and punts his ass out of the way and his little man syndrome kicked in. Now he wants to bitch and fuss. He was happy when he thought he could still buy his players. Now he sees it won't be as easy.

Very little can be done.

The NCAA is an archaic, washed up entity that has 0 foresight. They arw literally cutting their nose off to spite their face. clearing the brush away from the forest. Grasping at straws.

Zero sense in this other than to grab last iota or spot of power before its completely snipped.

Yep, Little Napoleon is being exposed.

Will happen in all of the revenue sports reasonably soon. Mass coaching and AD retirements on the way. Oh well...

Which is why we see college coaches courting legislators. They know there is nothing to be done under current law. They needs the federal gvt to specifically carve the NCAA as an exception to anti-trust laws. It's kind of dirty, actually. (We know it's against the law to set up a system that victimizes these kids, so... In order to keep victimizing them, we need an exception to the law that would keep us from victimizing them.)
