In Egypt it very likely was. Brewing beer was crucial to human development. It marks when humans go from nomads who don't understand farming (hunter-gatherers) to civilization. It also enabled Egypt to become the amazing Dynasty it became. It was a portable, high calorie, drink that didn't easily spoil and enabled warfare, conquest, and even giant public works projects (see Pyramids and other monuments) that simply weren't possible prior to it's advent. Without beer, Egypt (and the rest of the world and human civilization) would have stuttered greatly. It's unlikely humans ever stop being hunter-gatherers without it and/or similar fermented high calorie drinks. IOW, civilization doesn't happen without it.
And it brought about the inventions of the keg stand and the boilermaker.
