So you're saying anything less than 9 regular season wins is a failure this year? We still have too many unknowns and depth issues to say that. I think it still has to do with how games play out, and other factors like injury. I think 8-4 is the number this year as the benchmark. More than 8 is exceeding expectations. Like I said in another post 9-3 is my prediction, but there are too many toss up games to say 8-4 is a failure. 7-5 is the floor and will be disappointing, 11-1 is the ceiling and will set unrealistic expectations for the future by the fan base. How is his contract structured that money can't buy him out?
I like him. I like him as a coach. I like him as a guy. I am REALLY impressed with his leadership so far.... and not one bit of that matters if he gets no better than 8 wins in the next two years. To not get 9 wins this year... you assume losses to UGA and Bama. You assume wins vs Vandy, 3 OOC opponents, and maybe Mizzou.
You then look at 5 games- LSU with a new coach, UF with a new coach and some issues, UK, USCe, and a bowl opponent. The season hinges on those 5 games. After dropping the "leaners" last year... those 5 games will say A LOT about whether Heupel can compete in the SEC or not.
Sam Pittman and Lane Kiffin have shown it doesn’t take 5 years to rebuild a respectable program. With the way the transfer portal allows coaches to do an almost complete overhaul of a roster in 2 years if a coach can’t reach 10 regular season wins by year 3 or 4 it’s never going to happen
He needs 9 wins total. It doesn't matter whether you or I think 7 or 8 wins is a success or not. What matters is that he's competing with Bama, UGA, LSU, Miami, UF, et al for recruits. They've done a GREAT job getting UT in the conversation for top tier guys against programs with much more recent success- Tate is a good example. But to get from being in consideration to being the choice means that recruits have to say "Man, that guy can coach" and not "Man, can that guy coach?"So you're saying anything less than 9 regular season wins is a failure this year?
You are still trying to deal with what you think is "fair". Except for the rare recruit that grows up a diehard UT homer... they don't care about fair. They care about results. We still have too many unknowns and depth issues to say that. I think it still has to do with how games play out, and other factors like injury. Did Kiffin and Pittman walk into the exact same situations as Heupel? No they didn’t. And that’s the difference. Saying if a coach cannot win 10 in year 3-4 it will never happen is poor logic. Have we overhauled our roster with the portal? No.
No. It isn't "poor logic" at all. The reasons do not matter. Having good reasons for not winning do not influence top recruits any more than bad reasons. The "poor logic" is that you think it matters whether it is "unfair" or not. It isn't fair. No denying that. If records and performance didn't matter to recruits then I wouldn't oppose giving him more time. If NIL money would continue to pour in for 7 win teams then that would be great. However it is VERY poor logic to think that recruits don't care about a HC's performance on the field or that people will rush out to support a program that appears to still be stuck in its rut.Did Kiffin and Pittman walk into the exact same situations as Heupel? It's not what I think is fair. It's what I think is realistic. Here's what I really like about this staff. They are all football nerds with proven track records of developing lower rated players, with the exception of Garner. Garner is considered the GOAT at his respective position by many. We could see several players emerge as stars this season, but at this point, those are unknown factors. What needs to happen to take the next step, and what's realistic with our roster aren't necessarily going to match up. I want to see them do the best they can with what we have.He needs 9 wins total. This year LSU and UF both have new coaches. Both came into tough situations though not as bad as Heupel. LSU has a QB battle that may not be cleared up by the time they play UT. If the string is going to be broken by Heupel... can he ask for a better opportunity?
Then there's the lay of the schedules. UT plays Ball St, Pitt, Akron, and then UF. They get a week off before playing LSU.
UF opens with Utah then UK then a pretty bad USF team before traveling to K'ville.
LSU opens with FSU then plays Southern. They then play MSU, New Mexico, and Auburn before UT.
I like the way that lines up for UT against both opponents.
Not sure why that is so hard to understand for some. It's not what I think is fair. It's what I think is realistic. Here's what I really like about this staff. Badly need our corners to step up big time. Need both Hadden and Rucker to show out.So we are very concerned about our DB's, but when was the last time we didn't have at least one NFL dude in the secondary?
Makes me feel like at least someone is going to step up.
Even in 2017 we had Emmanuel Mosley and Double Gauldens
Our big-time boosters seem checked out. At least that's how it seems. Ruiz is funding Miami's NIL all on his lonesome. We don't have a booster that dedicated. I'm not sure the common fans can possibly make up that difference. I will say I share your concern, but I still think we can put together a good class. Not sure about a top 10 class, but at least a top 20 class. But it does seem that if money is the final deal maker, it's not in our favor against certain schools. I wish our coaches would follow the lead of other coaches around the country and make a plea to the fanbase for more support in NIL.@Weezer
I'm concerned we may not have as much money for NIL, as I have been thinking all these months; and, FM's recruitment has brought on a bit of concern, and if we don't land Bradley...yeah, somethings up, imo.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe there's an article from 3 to 5 months back, Spyre's initial goal was 5 mill, something like that, then they said that went to 25, 30 mill, annually....that on top with what Nico supposedly got, I thought they were stacking cash. I believe I was wrong.
That dude showing up in here, telling us only 600 or so are signed up, plus this recruitment, with it being Miami that landed him...yeah, I don't believe we have anywhere near 25, 30 mill. If we did, I truly believe we would have landed at least one of FM, Burley, Tate, Benson, Kasper, CJ Allen, Parker, Faulk, Rojas...at least one of them. My reasoning, A&M took several away from Bama, UGA, and OSU last year...with straight cash, homey.
Spyre needs more money, and im not sure they're going to get it anytime soon. They're going to have to hustle their asses off during the season, and we have to win.
