Like someone else said, That’s something the goat MJ would do. He got disrespected and used it as fuel if an opponent didn’t stop by and say hi to him when they were in the same restaurant lol. Much less if someone was talking down on you on social media. MJ in the social media age would have been interesting.
I think you have to be careful because we all love competitors but there's a fine line between someone being viewed as fierce on the field and a jerk off of it. What made MJ a mega star wasn't his game (it was great) but his
image and that was specifically as Mr. Apple Pie All American. No one would "Want to be like Mike" or for their kids to be "like Mike" if Mike's public image wasn't as refined as it was. And I don't know if MJ being MJ could've maintained that image in the social media age.
Teams/franchises had so much more power over the narrative back then as long as an athlete, politician, or performer stayed out of serious criminal trouble (and sometimes even if they didn't) interested companies and parties that had a lot riding on those images could keep the faces of their franchises squeaky clean.
You can't do that today. If someone goes out and acts like an ass in public (and sometimes even in private) we hear about it. There's often video of it and it doesn't go away whenever that day's newspaper is thrown out.
You want Hooker coming out of the pile mad as hell during the Florida game and firing his team up. That's great television and it's competition at its finest but you don't want him to get a rep as the guy that goes after random folks online or takes every little slight too seriously. That can turn on us and him.
To be clear, I don't think that's happening at all but it's an example of how things can turn. Hendon's a celebrity now and he's got to walk a finer line than he used to walk or he can easily fall into a trap. People are going to come after him and he's going to have to be able to let the little things go. It's part of the price of fame. To be fair though, I don't think it will be a problem for him. Everything he's done here has been competitiveness on the field and total class of the field.
