I was the poster you were responding to, and I'm literally saying that when I said "sucks" it was too harsh and wrong. But "sucks" is also subjective.
Point was, Tennessee basketball wasn't revered or respected on the grand scale nationwide really until the last 15-20 years. I think its fair to say "middling." Bruce made us be taken seriously. Barnes has sustained longevity. Together they've made us relevant to a generation of youth basketball players. The longer we sustain this consistency the better we are in the long run for recruiting and changing the narrative of what Tennessee's program is.
First, please don't ever put the word "the" in front of OSU again, even if grammar calls for it. Just on principle.
Second, speaking of grammar, I don't follow:
Did that need to be two sentences?
You're saying that if OSU beats Mich 50-17 they will be left out of the playoff in favor of us and a USC that wins out? I see no way the winner of (an) OSU and Mich game is left out of the playoff.
That’s awesome lol. If I ever move to East Tennessee like I plan to eventually I’ll be applying to your office first. No need to know the field. One of the managers who reports to me is recently hired and a Columbia, SC native. Being that we were not sure he had experienced the full breadth of East Tennessee hospitality yet, we adorned his desk with a number of welcome to Tennessee gifts this morning.
I barely remember Secretariat. I was 7 years old in 1973, but my Granny watched every race and I watched with her. I remember her going on and on about Secretariat and I think I remember that and probably not the races themselves. Great post. There's something about horse racing that's truly unique I think. The track doesn't change. The horses aren't getting faster. The jockeys aren't heavier. The bar has always been the same. The only change has been keeping ahead of PEDs.
Other sports, well its hard to compare a great by today's athletes. Babe Ruth wasn't likely hitting off 100mph fastballs. Bats have changed. Humans have gotten faster, taller, and bigger. Modern sports training and nutrition has helped with that. Tracks and distance stays the same, the shoes and suits have changed. Swimmers have toyed with different hydrodynamic bodysuits.
The marathon is the same, but the route always changes. Nevertheless, humans are still getting better at it.
Jim Brown and Derrick Henry will have always played in different eras with different equipment. Even different rules. Different season lengths. Then the endless MJ vs LeBron vs Kobe debate.
But in horse racing - its still just Secretariat. The same three tracks. They haven't changed. In the thousands, nay (pun), tens of thousands of horses that have run on these tracks (different divisions) none have sprung a good rep in perfect conditions to beat these times. And in 100 years only 13 total horses have won all three in a single year. I think its the only sport you can truly judge today's athlete to yesterday's.
I've come to the conclusion I need a job in the recruiting office. Nothing that involves me actually talking to the recruits, but something that lets me know all the details of what's going on. Then I can tease VN about knowing things I can't talk about....
I am going to start my second reading soon. I read it the first time. I may try it on audio this time. What are you reading? I just finally finished my 2nd read through of TWoT last week.
OMg I had forgotten how awesome and emotionally draining "A Memory of Light" is. You would think that knowing the story would preclude having that feeling again...nope.
That has to be the greatest payoff of a epic series ever written.
Sure..if you don't think being just barely good enough to not be called the worst is not sucky...most of us think pure mediocrity "sucks"
Many years ago me and my family went to Calibroun Stables (not sure about spelling) while I was in Lexington for a week. Visited Secretariat's grave and got to see and pet some of the other horse's like 49'er. It was an amazing day for my at the time small children.I barely remember Secretariat. I was 7 years old in 1973, but my Granny watched every race and I watched with her. I remember her going on and on about Secretariat and I think I remember that and probably not the races themselves. Great post.
There was a time after the game that CH talking about that play where Hyatt got so wide open on the sidleines, the one where Bru blocked for him down the sidelines, and CH said when asked about it said yeah we had that play in our back pocket and it was a great call. Doesn't sound like something CH would say about himself but maybe Golesh gives him suggestions according to what D they are running. Or it could be simply, "hey coach this would be a great time to run that play. Like I said I have no clue and I also see CH with the play call sheet. Maybe its both working together with the final word from CH.CH is calling those plays. Go back and look at film. It’s why Drinkwitz was getting mad that Heupel was outside of the coaching box. Because it was making it easier for him to see defensive alignments and call in plays on the spot.
What to watch for this weekend - a nice morning appetizer, then head outside to enjoy the brilliant fall afternoon weather (afternoon snoozers incoming), before the Cock beatdown nightcap twss! Here’s a rooting guide:
Noon
3:30pm
- Baylor rivalry game at home over TCU on their Senior Day. This is TCU takedown try #2 of 3
- Illinois run D slows down Michigan RB Corum’s Heisman hopes
7:00pm
- University of Kroger with the home shocker over UGA, all but guaranteeing our CFP place regardless of SEC outcome
- Maryland makes OSU QB Stroud look pedestrian.
- Miami over Clemson.... just enjoy the fall outdoors at this time slot alright?
- Vols overwhelm the Cocks twss
- 8pm UCLA over USC to eliminate any possibility of PAC12 CFP chatter. The dominoes are falling in the PAC12 and after the chaos last week, USC is the final piece of that puzzle. This is 1 of 3 USC takedowns (Notre Dame and Oregon/Utah winner upcoming)
