I mean…..for actual pitching, throwing strikes is most important.

1) no offense but highly unlikely your kid ever throws 90mph much less 96+mph which is about when you can worry a little less about location

2) doesn’t matter how hard you throw if you can’t throw strikes

Idk how old your kid is, but he should hold off on throwing any off speed besides change up for as long as possible.
He may never throw 90…. May never play college baseball…. May never even make varsity on his middle school/High School baseball team….. That doesn’t mean that you coach in a way that sets him behind other athletes.

My son pitches between 55-57 consistently which is the high end of average from what I have witnessed…. Some kids pitch up to 70 mph at this age from what I have seen… I have a radar detector but don’t use it with him bc he will change his mechanics to try and get a few mph out of his arm…. I don’t want him to do that. I want him to throw as fast as he can with correct mechanics.

What they do at a lot of Little Leagues/ even some travel ball is to basically get the kids throwing batting practice style…. They are not teaching the kids to be pitchers…..My son averaged one walk or less per game…. Every single time he or anyone else walks a guy….. all you hear is….. we don’t care how fast you pitch it…. Just throw strikes and let them hit.

Why don’t you feel like they should throw curveballs… studies show that it is one of the easiest pitches on young athletes arms.

Thank you. How old is your son? Also, sounds like overcoaching for sure. Throw the 2 seam and only go 4 seam if he wants to do it. If your son is under 13, I would caution on the curve ball especially if not throwing from 60 6. If he is doing it at a shorter distance then it is going to be tough to fix the break when he moves back to 60 6 and ball will break earlier than it needs to and can get hammered. If he is 12 or 13 and you can find a good pitching coach that can teach him a good slider that uses pressure points with his fingers with less wrist turn, it can be a real effective pitch for a third pitch instead of a curve ball. He will need long fingers however. Most college and my son's pitching coach ( who works with some mlb guys in the off season and spring training would caution curves before 13 or 14 and never start with the smaller mound difference. If a kid is throwing well and a coach wants to tinker just to make himself look smart, then you have a right to be ticked off.
He is 12….. He just started using it in games( last two regular season and through all stars…. He had been pitching just a fastball up till that point….I watch a ton of videos to help with my son….. one thing I learned from watching a video from Barry Zito….. he stated that he threw different pitches from the age of 7…. He didn’t use them in games but during warm ups with his dad…. He said that he would warm up to where he was loose and then throw 10-15 curveballs…. Sliders…. Changeups….. whatever….. I started doing that with my son…. He loved it…. Playing around with the different grips and styles…. It was very relaxed with hardly any intensity…..His curve became above average and he was begging me to use it in our bullpen sessions….. when we first started…. He would change his mechanics when pitching it… I told him he couldn’t throw it in a game unless he proved to me that his mechanics stayed the same…He did so I allowed him to use it in the last two games of the season..

The thing about switching mounds make sense but is there another reason they don’t think kids that age shouldn’t throw curves…. All the new high end studies state that it is easier on the arm than a fastball…. He throws a slider, cutter, and a change but none of them that he can throw consistently enough to use and I want him to just focus on a couple of pitches right now anyways.

I have thought about taking him to Ben brewer in Charlotte but I don’t trust many baseball trainers…. We have had a few including a few ex mlb… they weren’t very good and some had no clue what they were talking about… Many taught what they were told years ago…. Some of their teaching didn’t match how they played….too many cookie cutter approaches without trying to figure out the best way to reach the kid… My nephew went to several pitching coaches/hitting coaches…. Everyone changed something different and not a single one helped him to become a better player.

Check out Mike Reinold. He is a physical therapist up in Boston and he worked on the Sox staff for a number of years. Has a ton of info for youth pitching.

Went to a conference to hear him and Dr. Andrews speak on this topic
Thank you…… very interesting ready up on his views.

Hey Braves fans..............

July 3rd, 1966

Tony Cloninger hit two grand slams and drove in a total of nine runs in a 17-3 rout of the Giants at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. He became the first National League player at any position to hit two grand slams in one game, and remains the only pitcher ever to do so.

Question for the docs or health nuts on here. How much magnesium should one take?

I was taking a supplement of magnesium and one for calcium. Didn't notice until about 6 months later the calcium had magnesium too, started having dizziness and disorientation a little.

Stopped taking the supplements and everything back to normal. I think I was taking 650 MG.

Anyone in the know, was that too much?

@Mike4Vols

Had a great trip. As mentioned we got screwed on our boat. Made it only 25% of the planned journey. Dream Yacht Charters is a ****** company and I'll never charter with them again if I have the opportunity. The base staff was nice and as accommodating as they could be but the management away from the base are all POS. If I have the chance to do it again, I'll hit you up.

Check with @Mike4Vols
He has a very good company in the boat charter business.

Sucks when a planned vacation gets screwed up like that.

Smart guy, but very narcissistic. He was caught injecting mlb players with Toradol which is way outside his scope of practice.
