He may never throw 90…. May never play college baseball…. May never even make varsity on his middle school/High School baseball team….. That doesn’t mean that you coach in a way that sets him behind other athletes.

My son pitches between 55-57 consistently which is the high end of average from what I have witnessed…. Some kids pitch up to 70 mph at this age from what I have seen… I have a radar detector but don’t use it with him bc he will change his mechanics to try and get a few mph out of his arm…. I don’t want him to do that. I want him to throw as fast as he can with correct mechanics.

What they do at a lot of Little Leagues/ even some travel ball is to basically get the kids throwing batting practice style…. They are not teaching the kids to be pitchers…..My son averaged one walk or less per game…. Every single time he or anyone else walks a guy….. all you hear is….. we don’t care how fast you pitch it…. Just throw strikes and let them hit.

Why don’t you feel like they should throw curveballs… studies show that it is one of the easiest pitches on young athletes arms.

You are correct on easy on the arm. IF THROWN CORRECTLY. And most 12 year olds can’t do it repeatedly. Also, if not thrown from regular mound distance, then they have to relearn it anyway. Most middle school coaches can’t teach it correctly and if they do, kids can’t consistently repeat. Darren Holmes as well as guy who has worked with big name mlb guys with a biomechanics degree have shared this with me.

He is 12….. He just started using it in games( last two regular season and through all stars…. He had been pitching just a fastball up till that point….I watch a ton of videos to help with my son….. one thing I learned from watching a video from Barry Zito….. he stated that he threw different pitches from the age of 7…. He didn’t use them in games but during warm ups with his dad…. He said that he would warm up to where he was loose and then throw 10-15 curveballs…. Sliders…. Changeups….. whatever….. I started doing that with my son…. He loved it…. Playing around with the different grips and styles…. It was very relaxed with hardly any intensity…..His curve became above average and he was begging me to use it in our bullpen sessions….. when we first started…. He would change his mechanics when pitching it… I told him he couldn’t throw it in a game unless he proved to me that his mechanics stayed the same…He did so I allowed him to use it in the last two games of the season..

The thing about switching mounds make sense but is there another reason they don’t think kids that age shouldn’t throw curves…. All the new high end studies state that it is easier on the arm than a fastball…. He throws a slider, cutter, and a change but none of them that he can throw consistently enough to use and I want him to just focus on a couple of pitches right now anyways.

I have thought about taking him to Ben brewer in Charlotte but I don’t trust many baseball trainers…. We have had a few including a few ex mlb… they weren’t very good and some had no clue what they were talking about… Many taught what they were told years ago…. Some of their teaching didn’t match how they played….too many cookie cutter approaches without trying to figure out the best way to reach the kid… My nephew went to several pitching coaches/hitting coaches…. Everyone changed something different and not a single one helped him to become a better player.

My son threw 4 seem Fastball and changeups until 13 and he was in 8th grade with slider. Picked up cutter and two seem in 9th. Mostly 2 seem slider cutter and change now. He was fortunate to have one pitching coach since 9 and a summer coach that was similar with his regular coach. It’s hard to find good ones.

Looking back at that 2021 class... two things:
1. Woof
2. Hype wasn't shy about setting his standard and getting rid of the guys that didn't fit his culture or meet his standard.

Of that 2021 HS/JUCO class:

12 were dismissed or transferred. Only 4 of those 12 ended up at P5 schools (Merrill, Evans, McNeill, Coby - 2 of those transferred this offseason). Meaning 8 players ended up at Jucos or G5 schools (some <G5).

1 was drafted - Byron Young

4 are still on the roster - DeShawn Rucker, Christian Charles, Jaylen Wright, and Jeremiah Crawford. Crawford was the lowest rated player in the class (also why y'all need to stop pooping on the low 3*s we pick up - they can be puke-in-Bama's-face legends)

Of the transfer class, which Hype had more control of:

3 Dismissed/Transferred - Dajon Terry, Willie Mohan, Juwan Mitchell

4 Graduated/Drafted - McGrath, Hooker, Tremblay, Payton

3 On roster - Joe Milton, Kamal Hadden, Brandon Turnage

That's some MAJOR attrition, but we are that much closer to having ALL Heupel recruits. I'm not sure of the 4 HS recruits which were retained in the class and which Heupel brought in after he was hired.

This is what I think: Crawford - H (committed on signing day), Wright - Pruitt, Charles - Pruitt, Rucker - Pruitt. Byron Young was a Heupel recruit.

I would suggest heading on over to Vestal if Dot's Grill, from the 80's, was still there. . . Mr. Pease would always buy the broke kids a hamburger or hot fudge brownies & ice cream there.
I didn't grow up in Vestal (I was a Navy brat), but my family is from there. Is that where you grew up?
