For all of our issues, I think 70% of our potential success hinges on the QB position. The difference between subpar, serviceable and above average could swing up to 4 games, IMO

The crazy thing is, we really don't know what (or who) we are going to get.

Hard to predict this season

I know we haven't seen them on the field yet, but has there even been such a turnaround at a position in UT history? I mean we went from one of the worst reciever corps in a long time to arguably the strength of our team next season. In just one year we added a huge amount of talent and depth. Pearson, Malone, Helm, Wolf, Jenkins returning, and Wharton in one offseason.

Not that I know of and based on projections and depth alone they could end up being one of the best WR/TE corps in country. Other teams may have individuals or duos who are better, time will tell, but as a unit the WR/TE corps is unreal. If our Oline can give them and the QBs half a chance we'll see some big time plays.

You've been using 70% as a benchmark quite a bit lately. :)

x1000. I've said this a few times. Sure our OL/DL are question marks, but the kind of play we get at QB could change a 5 win season into an 8-9 win season in a hurry. Yep, I just said an 8-9 win season. :) If one of our guys asserts himself and takes off we could truly be in for a special season.

Just ran across this:

NCAAF David Shaw: Why can't SEC play 9? - ESPN

"Waaaaaaa!!" is all I can say. An 8-game SEC schedule is more difficult than any 9-game conference schedule in any other league imo. More typical PAC-whatever whining.

I refuse to use facebook for comments but one of those idiots in the comments section posted this:

Ian Yates
case in point. Non Conference Games for the Entire SEC (2014)

Alabama - Florida Atlantic, Western Carolina, West Virginia
Auburn - San Jose St., Louisiana Tech, Samford (SAMFORD!!)
Georgia - Troy, Charlston Southern
SC - East Carolina, South Alabama
Florida - Idaho, Eastern Michigan, Eastern Kentucky
MS State - Southern Miss, UAB, UT Martin
MIzzou - S Dakota State, Toledo, UCF (WEEKS 1-3!!), Indiana
Ole Miss - Boise St (at home), LA Lafayette, Presbyterian (MF Presbyterian), Memphis
Tenn - Utah St, AK St, Chattanooga
A&M - Lamar (WTF is Lamar), Rice, SMU, UL Monroe
Vandy - Temple, UMass, Charlston Southern, Old Dominion
AK - Nicholls St, TX Tech, UAB, Northern Illinois
LSU - Wisconsin (in baton rouge), Sam Houston, UL Monroe, NM St.
Kentucky - UT Martin, Ohio (not Ohio St), UL Monroe, Louisville (away)

so out of all these non conference games you have a legitimate argument for LSU Wisoncon, but its in Baton Rouge, Ole Miss - Boise St, but its at Ole Miss and maybe Kentucky - Louisville. but Kentucky has 0.00% change of winning the SEC.

now how is that playing top competition.

Notice anything missing just on the ones I bolded?

Haha, what an idiot. Of course the data supports his point perfectly when a few things are conveniently left off.

Yep!

I know and when he concedes that LSU is playing Wisconsin, he immediately says it doesn't count because it's in Baton Rouge. Sneaky little PAC-homer.

Oklahoma, Florida State, Clemson and Georgia Tech I would say have been left off.

Yep. UT, UF, UGA, and USC's schedules don't align well with his 'they don't play anyone whine.' And bringing up UF, UGA, and USC would bring up the fact that those schools have permanent OOC rivals against quality opponents. Georgia is playing both Clemson and Tech this year.

Also Auburn's missing game (and I know I didn't highlight them) is K-State.

I guess that means it doesn't count that Michigan State is playing at Oregon.

Here's their schedule. Looks like we share a lot of cupcakes but other than that they are the only power conference that couldn't seem to get on our schedule this year.

So the Big East has one more title than the title stripped PAC. No wonder they're mad. :eek:lol:

The PAC can't make the SEC schedule this year and they throw a fit over it? I don't think that's the way to woo people to want to play you, especially when you're across the country and there are plenty of schools for SEC schools to choose from on this side of the Great Continental Divide. A little politeness goes a long way in getting marquee match ups like that - it's an ordeal to go the width of this country even with air travel and programs are more inclined to do it when there's a good relationship rather than a snotty one.

The SEC is so tough that he probably assumed Florida State, Clemson and Georgia Tech were already in our conference.

You are an opposing def. coordinator. How are you going to cover North,Pearson,Malone,Croom, and Hurd in the backfield? Who gets the double team?
Can you cover Hurd with an LB? Got to keep an eye out for our DT QB.

It's a nightmare isn't it?

Depends on who the QB is. I doubt many teams have the secondary to man all of those guys.

If a youngin' like ferguson or Dobbs ends up starting, then zone blitz zone blitz zone blitz to try and force him into a mistake.

Against Worley, I'd try my luck with some man coverages and make Worley make the throws to beat us. He won't make a lot of tragic mistakes, but he's not the type of guy who will consistently make big throws to beat coverages.

However, no matter what you do, you run the risk of any one of those guys turning a 5 yard catch into a TD if you miss a single tackle.

I'd expect teams try to blitz us and get into our QBs heads with a relatively inexperienced OL this season. Hopefully we get more production out of our screen game to keeps defenses honest. Having Wolf to block on those plays will be huge for us this season I think.

I'm so pumped to see this offense play ball.
