Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

Depends on who the QB is. I doubt many teams have the secondary to man all of those guys.

If a youngin' like ferguson or Dobbs ends up starting, then zone blitz zone blitz zone blitz to try and force him into a mistake.

Against Worley, I'd try my luck with some man coverages and make Worley make the throws to beat us. He won't make a lot of tragic mistakes, but he's not the type of guy who will consistently make big throws to beat coverages.

However, no matter what you do, you run the risk of any one of those guys turning a 5 yard catch into a TD if you miss a single tackle.

I'd expect teams try to blitz us and get into our QBs heads with a relatively inexperienced OL this season. Hopefully we get more production out of our screen game to keeps defenses honest. Having Wolf to block on those plays will be huge for us this season I think.

I'm so pumped to see this offense play ball.

Did I mention the offense is running a play every fifteen seconds? How do you substitute? Your big uglies are gassed. Make sure the right guy flops so you can catch a breather and get the right personnel on the field.

Honestly, I forgot about the fact that we'll likely run a higher tempo this season.

Last season was so slow I forgot that facet of our offense (though that likely had to do with our needing to give the defense a breather because they often had trouble getting off the field).

My thoughts exactly. Screen passes will definitely slow down an aggressive defense.

Whoever our QB is, he's going to have to be able to read the defense & then get the ball out quickly.

You are an opposing def. coordinator. How are you going to cover North,Pearson,Malone,Croom, and Hurd in the backfield? Who gets the double team?
Can you cover Hurd with an LB? Got to keep an eye out for our DT QB.

It's a nightmare isn't it?

If Worley starts you bring pressure play man and make him beat you deep. My guess is this will happen easily 5-6 times this year

No matter who starts you better bring pressure. You can't allow those WRs to work against the DBs all game. They'll break lose for big ones.

But the problem is Hurd will make you honor the run a lot. If you miss him going for the QB your DBs are in trouble.

I just finished watching the Vols drain the swamp in 2001. Man I can't wait until our DL wreaks that much havoc again. They were in Grossman's face all game. Go Vols!

Three questions:

1. Does anyone else think it's possible that our offensive line this year may be physically stronger than our offensive line last year? I mean none of those guys last year were squatting 600+ lbs. Right?

2. Does anyone else suspect that the guys on the offensive line this year have been and are now working harder (training wise) than the aggregate effort of the guys last year?

3. Does anyone think that Jason Carr can make the transition to offensive line well enough and fast enough to make in game contributions this year?

Q: I would bet that you've never hit on a situation where you're doing a wholesale overhaul of the offensive line like in 2014. You had a few guys in the spring who can help immediately. You foreseeing things jelling in August?

A: I do. I do really see those individuals coming together. You're exactly right, so much is working together. I thought we had pretty good continuity among the five up front. I've never been in a situation where you basically have to replace both your offensive and defensive lines. Again, it's the reality of building a football program right now. We're going to have to play some true freshmen on both sides of the ball, and as we know in the SEC, at those positions it's unforgiving. But it's also invigorating, being around an inordinate amount of youth and developing them. I thought our older players did a great job of really mentoring the young players that came into the program in January.

Coach's Corner: Tennessee's Butch Jones

This year's O-Line may be stronger than last year's group, but by no means does that mean they are better.

I have faith that Jackson and Kerbyson can be solid. Crowder can be serviceable. And who the hell knows about the Tackle spots.

IMO, the OL is the weakest group on the team.

I would take Tiny over Blair
I would take Jackson over Bullard
I would take Stone over Crowder
I would take Fulton over Kerbyson
I would take James over Thomas

I absolutely agree with your takes but if Butch is right and these guys come together we may shock the 4 and 8 crowds. The guys last year had a lot of hype coming into the season and by most accounts didn't consistently live up to expectations. This year the guys don't have that hurdle to get over, quite the opposite actually, so I won't be surprised if their performance exceeds the meager expectations of many. I don't think they'll be all-SEC by any means but I think barring injury they just might work out not too bad. We have 3 more months of strength and conditioning and then 29 practices before we get to fairly grade their first performance. The clock is running.

I go with yes, yes, and clueless on the Carr question. James is the only one they will miss IMO. They would have missed Tiny, but his performance dropped a lot last season. Understand why. Doesn't change the fact he was average at best.

Super strength is great if you can still move your feet quickly enough to get to your assignment. Last year's O-line struggled with that.

CP getting some love, still pissed he was there for the Colts to draft(and they needed a WR) and they didn't. Sounds like he is coming in to his own, and he was taking a couple classes at UT during this offseason. Good to hear he is still wanting to get a degree. BTW, I would love a purple authentic Patterson jersey.

I'm proud of Patterson. He's working hard in his life.

Brice said that it does not appear that Pig Howard will be back, He did not get his academic affairs in order.

I wish Kerbyson would be able to move to the left tackle spot and out perform the other guys. Then we could put Weisman in his spot and be good to go

I actually had that same idea written and deleted it because I figured it would get ripped on here. I agree obviously. He's played right tackle, but we need somebody to take ownership on the left come fall. They could use Weisman in there as a starter. Mean on the field and takes nothing from nobody.
