Recruiting Forum: Football Talk XI

As a few of you guys pointed out, these guys probably wouldn't be in the two-deep this year, but I hate losing linemen. It is what it is, but I'd like to see some guys stay in the program and go through several years of S&C. At this point, O'Brien seems like an old man.

That said, if they weren't gonna make it, I guess they might as well find more compatible situations now.

From FranklinVol on VQ...

Just a couple of small, random things

Some of this may be old news and maybe some of it won't. I mentioned earlier about Ryan Johnson (2016). He's a large young man and a very polite and intelligent young man. I've given his history before but he is being recruited pretty hard by others. The good news is that he is being recruited as hard or harder by the Big Orange. He is definitely not being taken for granted by Butch and company. It makes all the difference.

I didn't realize that Rico McGraw is from/grew up in Giles County. He and Ordway are buddies. I had not heard that connection. I was told that Rico is very much in play in Knoxville and there was a chance that both these guys will go to the same school. Not that it would definitely happen but that it was a possibility. Both guys should be back in Knoxville this summer/fall.

I didn't get an update on Bryce Matthews but will get one before long. Obviously, it's been posted about CJ. No big surprise there at all except that a lot of folks thought he may end up on the west coast. Being away from home was never going to be an issue.

My son was at a QB workout last week with the kid (Matt Williams) from Lancaster Christian. It was just the 2 of them. I'm going to assume that we will land maybe Gibson and/or Gentry but Williams was a good sized kid with a pretty big arm. He didn't have the control and precision that I thought he should have but his arm and size was better than I expected. Nice kid. His Dad told me he was going to a prep school this fall and hoped to be an early enrollee in college next January.

This is pretty early to say but a BA kid that is a rising 9th grader is going to be a stud. Cam Johnson will probably start at wide receiver as a 9th grader. Cam is a fantastic basketball player and will start on the HS hoops team for sure next year. He's about 6'1" or 6'2". He plays AAU at a high level and I'm not sure he's done anything at this point to get himself noticed in football but he's very talented. He takes honors classes and makes great grades.

Coach Thig went by Maplewood to visit a kid today that had transferred from Pope John Paul. I forgot his name but he is a beast I'm told. He will be a senior next year and has kind of gone unnoticed. He's about 6'3" and 240 while running a 4.5. I'll get his name next time but I'm sure he's not on any Rivals Top 100 lists or anything. He also has good grades.

Kyle Phillips will in all likelihood come down to UT/Bama with UT holding a slight edge right now. I was told that one UT coach felt like Amadi was too short while another absolutely loves him. Sometimes those things happen. He definitely has an offer but it would explain why he wasn't feeling as much love as we would expect. It's a long time until signing day and hopefully, we can get it together and get this guy.

Finally, our coaches are all over middle Tennessee! It really fires me up how well our coaches are recruiting here and using relationships while developing more relationships! That's it for now.

Can we get a comparison vs opponents for this season?

What's GRRM? Maybe I'll read it next.

Other side of the discussion. Game of Thrones. Far better writing, IMO.

If you like fantasy, The Bone Doll's Twin is a solid series. I'm also an Orson Scott Card fan.

Can't say I'm a fantasy/sci-fi guru though. Never read Goodkind, Butler, Herbert, Asimov, etc. I like it, but it's too epic. Takes me too long to finish.

Love OSC. Too philosophical to ever be super mainstream, but one of the deeper sci-fi writers out there.

His prose is kinda clunky for some, and all of his characters are the smartest people to ever live. I enjoy it for the most part, though.

Nice work, but I was hoping you could tie in their astrological signs, to predict love, and on field production.

Love Orson Scott Card. Asimov's stuff is truly incredible as well, can't recommend it enough. My dad had a bunch of it so I grew up reading. Check out the Foundation series if you get the chance.

Card has a very...absolute sense about his writing. You get the feeling that everything's going on in the same universe, almost. Many of his protagonists share a lot of the same traits. But I very much enjoy that he's willing to take on contemporary and/or uncomfortable issues, even sometimes before they become contemporary. His approach to them is, I find, very similar to how a lot of things play out in the real world. The guy is a brilliant visionary, possibly too brilliant.

The Carr loss only stings because of wasted potential. We thought he was going to be big time coming out of high school, but it was becoming apparent, for whatever reason, that was wrong.

I'd rather have the extra space and wish him luck in the future. Bring on some more DL!

Your first sentence is so true... my hometown Memphis should maybe adopt that as the city motto; something like, "Memphis: The City of Wasted Potential!"
I always believed it to be: "Memphis: Half-Arse Or Not At All!"

White Station High School has been known for its students exceeding their potential, kinda an outlier to things that are the Usual Memphis Way.

Was really rooting for Jason Carr. This truly makes me sad for him.

Saw Marcell Dareus got arrested. I feel like a lot of Saban's Bama kids have had run-ins with the law in the NFL, but not in college. Off the top of my head Rolando McClain is the only one I can think of though. Two questions:

1. Are there others or am I imagining this?

2. If I'm not imagining it, how does Saban manage this?

What's our 2015 WR big board look like?

1. Preston Williams
2. ?

What's it look like after Preston?

Regarding Jason Carr’s transfer, I want to go on record in opposition to some of the demeaning comments I’m seeing on VolNation, admittedly, mostly in the FF. I think it’s painful to lose a relationship with someone you had high hopes for but sometimes for any number of reasons things just don’t work out. I think parting ways, though as noted not without pain, is sometimes the best thing for all parties. The fact that Jason wasn’t going to be able for whatever reason to be used by our staff to, in their view, the best benefit of our football team does not in my view reflect negatively on Jason or the coaches. It just didn’t work out.

Parting ways now is in the best interest of Jason because I think he still has a bright future in football, just not with us, and I think we’ll be okay without him. The difference between someone like Jason Carr and Allan Carson or Woody Quinn is that we could have used Jason at different positions based on our needs. Some guys don’t offer any versatility.

Jason wanted to play DE and he’s not the first guy , and he’s far from the last, who has balked at a move to another position. I don’t think he was going to play DE for us so I respect the coaches for moving him to where they thought he could contribute in our present schemes and with our present roster. I don’t know that they wanted to force a transfer. I sort of doubt it but the move to offensive line was a significant factor, yet according to Butch yesterday, not the only consideration. I believe and hope we will be fine.

I also believe Jason is a fine young man with tremendous potential who still has a lot of opportunities available to him. He will land somewhere and I expect he’ll be a star. He needs to find the right fit and a team that has a need for what he whole-heartedly can offer. I’ll be cheering for him for the rest of his career no matter where he is, no matter whether he’s up or whether he’s down, because in my book if you’ve ever worn the Orange, I’ll be one of your fans for life. God speed Jason Carr. #GoVols!
