I am saying with 100% certainty you don't know how coaching searches work. Coaches are informed they won't be retained all the time, and HC positions are not advertised/posted. AD's actively pursue new coaches while still having one under contract (but not being retained) regularly.
Recent ETSU HC examples not advertised...
Baseball HC position NOT posted
Basketball HC position NOT posted
Football HC position NOT posted
All Of these recent new HC's were identified by the AD and pursued and landed.
But keep telling us of the NCAA family member you have that has zero understanding of the hiring and firing practices of universities in the state of TN. A hiring search has zero to do with NCAA compliance.
Im open to reconsider. Someone convince me why Mullen would be more than a solid hire (which I think it would be). Convince me with coaching staff, stories, philopsophy, etc. why Mullen is a sexy, championship-level hire.
Cliffs notes version:
As an assistant:
Position coach for #1 overall draft pick. OC and position coach for heisman trophy winner. OC for two national title teams.
As a head coach:
Has made the worst job in the toughest division of the hardest conference in the country an above average to good program. A program that had only 13 bowl appearances in its history prior to him, he has made 7 in a row and this season will be 8. Has the reputation of maximizing and developing talent and finding good recruits even though all the schools around him have more to offer.
He pretty much is to the west at MSU what Franklin was to the East at Vandy. If he had similar results at UT that Franklin is at PSU im in i guess. I just want Gruden. That would be epic. Mullen isnt epic.
I want Gruden also but Mullen is a ground rule double with a runner on second and one out. Would win 9 to 11 consistently and with right QB, watch the f out!
Specifically, I don't recall many of them. But practically, you wouldn't want to enforce it if the guy decides he doesn't want to be at your school.
1. Greg Schiano Defensive coordinator at Ohio State
You might scoff at this, but Im all in on Greg Schiano.
He did tremendous things at Rutgers, and then he decided to give the NFL a shot. Obviously that didnt work out too well, but hes hardly the first great college coach to suffer the same fate.
Schiano then went to Ohio State to learn from one of the best in Urban Meyer.
I think Schiano is the most realistic possibility for the Volunteers. And I think hes probably the most sure thing on this list. He has the ability to turn Tennessee into a national championship contender.
And I dont think hed hesitate to take the job at Tennessee plus he probably wouldnt force the Vols to break the bank for his services.
Schiano, who is only 51, has the potential to be the next great head coach in college football.
Is that a big deal coming from BabyVol?
I thought that was a different babyvol here in 2012?If, as another poster mentioned, that's the original BabyVol, then he is legit. However, I would caution that in 2012 he was all in on Gruden and completely believed Gruden was coming here. He was one of the primary insiders fanning the flames last time around. I do think BabyVol had serious contacts at the time of the last coaching search, but he was either fed some bad info or the situation turned a different direction than his contacts expected. TIFIW.
This!! He needs to officially be a part of our program. Hire him as VFL coordinator and official motivational speaker.
