Hawkins did go 53 - 11 at BSU. But, wasn’t that with Petersen as his OC? Unfortunately for Hawkins, that success didn’t follow him to Colorado.

Yeah he was. Both Hawkins and Dirk Koetter never really did much at their gigs after BSU. Harsin has done pretty well there as well. There's just something about BSU where every coach they bring in seems to do well.

Petersen has been the outlier for them, though. It's pure speculation on my part, but I kind of think that seeing Koetter and Hawkins not pan out is part of the reason Petersen waited so long to make the jump and was so picky about where to go. He could've gone just about anywhere that opened up between 2008 and 2013. But for whatever reason, he didn't.

If he became the top candidate, that buyout is easily workable. He’s making $2 mil with incentives currently. Give him a raise to &3 mil and float that $9 mil buyout over 5 years. Would entail a minimal buyout for us if he’s fired...a substantial ($15 mil?) if he jets on us. By year 3 we should have a pretty good bearing of what we hired and if he’s killing it, we can reward him by making his contract friendlier. Thoughts?

I haven't really had him high on my list. I guess it is because I really know very little about him. However, the low salary requirements might come in handy compared to most of the other top candidates.

I just guess I need someone to explain to me how he would be better than Scott Frost.

Hmmm. There was a poster that mentioned Petersen had interest in this job in the past. He/she was ridiculed to no end. Made fun of. Laughed at. Scoffed at. Wish I could remember which poster that was.

We'll see what comes of it all. So far we've got a rumor that Currie will go after him and that's about it.

Frost has the more impressive resume as a player/assistant.

Campbell has the more impressive resume as a HC and was rumored to have been pursued by Bellicheck in the past.

I see them as about equal as HC candidates. Frost probably has higher upside down the road because of recruiting connections in Florida. Campbell is the safer bet to not implode a program because he's doing well at his second stop as a HC and has beaten top competition before.

He wouldn't have pursued him if hadn't received positive feedback that he would listen. I'm confident he's expressed interest in the past.

We've had a lot of coaches express interest in the past. Most of them really appreciated the raise they got as a result of that interest.

I'll wait and see how things go before I buy in to him seriously looking to jump from a school he reached the playoffs with a year ago to a part of the country he hasn't lived or coached in since Ross Perot was a presidential candidate.

Whole thing reeks of LSU thinking they could Lure Fisher away from FSU a few years back when he was atop the ACC. But LSU at least had a connection that could be drawn in that case. Much less to go on here.

He didn't use this interest as an opportunity to get a raise. It went totally unreported. The timing wasn't right before. I don't think he comes here but he has shown interest. What's funny is a few days ago there's no way he would he think about the Vols now he's just aiming for a raise. It really cracks me up.

Good points.

What Frost is doing this year is quite impressive. I realize that his head coaching resume is short, but his team is killing the opposition, with only one game less than double digits (7 points) this season.

People want to sleep on Frost, but you’ve only got one shot at him

I was/am talking about this time. There hasn't been anybody of note go on record and say anything about him showing interest before, so it really doesn't factor into the discussion.

We'll see if there's any legitimate interest this time. If there's any truth to him having real interest, there will be some smoke somewhere other than Tennessee message boards.

I hope I'm wrong, Petersen is interested, and Currie makes an Alpha move to go get him. I'd love to eat crow on this. But, sadly, I'm 99.99% sure nothing will come of the Petersen chatter and I'll never have to. There's just nothing of substance thus far to suggest he has real interest in Tennessee or the Southeast in general. If he turned down UF a few years back when they were stacked with an elite defense, I'm not really sure what would attract him here unless he's in it all for the money and we offer him droves more than Washington is willing to pay.

I agree what he's doing is impressive. I'm just not sure him beating up on AAC teams with a team ina talent-laden area is necessarily more impressive than Campbell beating TCU and Oklahoma at Iowa State with a 3rd string QB.

I think you can make genuinely strong cases for either Frost or Campbell. There are unknowns with both. Either will be a risk, but both have done enough good things to make one optimistic about their potential.

On Frost, you take a team from 0-12 to 10-1 or 11-0 in two years, that's impressive. He's just an impressive figure in general. He looks and acts like a football coach. I don't quite know if that means anything, I guess he just comes across as completely different than Butch Jones and right now I'm thinking completely different would be a nice change of pace.

On Campbell, going to a cellar dweller like Iowa State and beating two top 5 teams in the same season doesn't really happen by accident. He clearly knows how to win big games, which is well more than any of our last 3 hires could say.

OK. Point taken.

Like with Venables, I go back to Frost's pedigree. He has studied under many of the best there is.
