I'll just agree to disagree. If we're going to bring Petrino in and say screw what the media thinks is rather take my chances with Tee. I think he could put together a pretty good staff, unite the fanbase, and maybe even win some games. I understand your point.

Yep, agree to disagree. I think Tee would be an ill-fated hire.

You and I had a conversation on here about his resume. We compared him to Frost of the early 2000s. Miami tried to hire him. We talked about much needed discipline.

Someone mentioned Penn St. I had never heard that. I thought no way in hell we could hire him after reading that. We all were wrong.

Dang your memory is sharp. I swear I don't remember the penn state thing until a few days ago.

First I saw of them was Friday or Saturday

Were they mentioned before then?

The story has been around since last year. I only heard about it googling his history after I told Aesius it would be an underwhelming hire (wanted to make sure I wasn't talking out of my ass). After I read the info about it, I just assumed we wouldn't touch him.

Why wouldn't they want us to be good then? That gets you as much control as you want? Serious question.

And boat loads of money. My guess is they think they are tied to UT because their family hired Neyland and its their legacy to be the rulers of UTK or some stupid shi ite like that.

You are right about this. Just not Kiffin being an answer.

Kiffin isn't the only answer.

Mike Leach would be another coach who would tell the Halsams to SHUT IT. there are plenty of other coaches out there.

Just saying if it came down to it and we had to hire Lane Kiffin I would be okay with it.

At this point whatever disrupts the Halsams power and their ability to make UT football into the Cleveland Browns of college football I am all for.

It wouldn't. It's not like you're not getting any players, it's players just ranked lower. This class is not going to make us beat Bama, GA, or anyone for that matter. Get the hire wrong you lose classes next year, the year after, the year after that. Then you fire the coach again and we're sitting here doing this again.

This is nuts. A decent coach can get 20s ranked classes at UT, a interim staff is going to get 50s+ garbage It is a self imposed death penalty. We might as well just quit forever. No good coach is going to want to start literally from scratch with non SEC caliber players on the team. I mean your talking about 12 games next season that will look like the Vandy game, a team of walking dead zombies with nothing to play for, can you imagine the toxicity that is going to imbed deep into the program...this idea is stupid. There are some decent coaches who can make the Vols competitive. You are talking about throwing mulitple years away on the gamble this horse**** admin will/can get a better coach than they can right now.

You can't have an interim at this point. We would lose all our assistants in short order. If it was February it would be different. Let's just take our time and get the best hire possible even if it doesn't happen this week.

My theory on why this turned into a blazing dumpster fire and is technically more fixable than we think good or bad.

Money.

We were all told we would spend it with this hire. There is not a single source that said otherwise. That and that alone got us believing in a laundry list of good to great candidates.

Except the most eggregious misdirection wasn't Gruden it was that we were not going to spend big. AV is not pissed about not hiring Gruden he is pissed we weren't putting money towards a legit top tier coach. That trickles down to large and small donors alike.

Now the solution is still money. Either they get this hire reasonably right or their will be financial repercussions. No playing this time. Guys like AV pulling donations hurts bad but 100's of guys like Larry, my dad, and many of you buying a fist full of seats, and concessions hurts way damn worse in the long haul.

Absolute power corrupts absolutely but money is the root of all evil. Kill the root and you kill the tree.

Les Miles.

He is my guy and then Tee.

Les is someone I wouldn't have considered a week ago, but he could work because he would be willing to do a creative, shorter-term contract (maybe 1+ option for 2) with little-to-no buyout. He wouldn't demand big bucks that UTAD isn't willing to pay.

The best value and quickest rebuild is going to come from someone who has solid experience but isn't in great demand and has something to prove.

Wow! Professor, where is Gruden? Last I read (albeit have skipped a ton), you predicted “soon”

I myself didn't predict crap.

Sure, I hoped for Gruden just like 75% of our fan base.

I was aboard the Gruden train 100%. I bought into it, but so did Ziti and Ron plus plenty of others.

My old man has a friend who is very well connected (so I thought) to the University of Tennessee and he text him that Jon Gruden would be the next coach and that the presser would be that Friday. That guy was wrong and I openly apologized to everyone.

It is being discussed in the Gruden thread that Gruden did sign and we may have to actually pay damages to him because of the agreement that Schiano signed (and may have to now pay him also)- that seems absolutely ridiculous right now but given the last 24 hours I have no idea. Did Bald Biker ever mention if anything was actually signed by Gruden?

I can see the doubt. I get it. But, imo, there are 2 things that seperate him from all the other candidates, by a wide margin.

1. Tee will kill it in recruiting. I know, so did Butch. Tee will be at another level, especially with metro-Nashville booming with talent. 2018 may be the greatest class in Tennessee high school history and '19 and '20 are looking like they will be even better. Add 5 more spots in recruiting rankings on average than Butch was ranked. Talent makes up for a lot and Tee can't coach 'em up any worse than Butch did.

2. Oh yeah, former QB of the undefeated 1998 National Champion Vols. Imo, Tee was 2 plays and whether or not u believe, if UT had beat Arkansas, they would get a NC shot, maybe 1 play away from another NC game.

I agree. We are in completely uncharted territory and I think a guy like Les gives us at least a shot.

He can recruit.
Commands respect but let's players be players.
Is loved by media (people down play how bad we will need this for recruiting)
He is lucky (we could use some)
He wins (mostly)

Except the tree is our beloved university. The goal is not to kill the tree but to rid it of the blight. Gonna take a smarter strategy than pouring poison on the roots.

Seriously invol..How would that work?.. We have a 30-50th ranked class this year and then even worse next year because staff has to have time to find, evaluate and court players, to add to a horrid roster already. What sane human being is going to take the job, and try and turn that around after the 2018 season is done. Which would probably be a nightmarish 1-11 or worse with lame duck interims running it. This might be the stupidist idea of all time really, and I know you are not stupid, I'm not calling you that, but you are talking about a REAL self imposed death penalty. That is insane..

Can’t roll with an interim. Got to find a coach and get it right. They are all so stupid up there.

Totally and utterly ridiculous. Gruden didn't sign anything. I can assure you that. I have a fraternity brother of mine who is close family friends with the Gruden family

this past Tuesday, Cindy had told my friends mom that she wanted Gruden to coach for UT.

once again believe me or don't, I don't care. but if Gruden had signed then there is no way that conversation is about Cindy wanting Gruden to be the next coach but its about Gruden actually being the next coach.

Got it. Yeah, I too was onboard, but skipped through tons of posts just to catch up, so missed your explanation. 👍🏿

I've become such a pessimistic fan, and that happened even before this Schiano crap. I thought to myself when it was clear Jones was done after the Georgia game, Tennessee just won't hire a good coach because they all suck. You have to luck yourself into even a Dabo/Fulmer-type hire.

With three dead hires since Fulmer, The chances that Tennessee's next coach would be an SEC east winning coach were slim to none. Now, I think they'll be lucky to land a coach that will keep them in the top half of the East.

I allowed myself a little hope with all the optimistic talk of money and effort behind the next hire. Not Gruden, but I thought a decent coach might be attainable.

I hate this administration.

I am the one championing for ways for inept Currie and Haslam to pull out a hail mary so I don't want this tree dead either. That said if you wanna fix it at the top that is all that is left.

Appreciate you taking your lumps. Sounds like your dad's friend was the victim of malicious disinformation subterfuge. Not the only one apparently.
