I agree. We are in completely uncharted territory and I think a guy like Les gives us at least a shot.

He can recruit.
Commands respect but let's players be players.
Is loved by media (people down play how bad we will need this for recruiting)
He is lucky (we could use some)
He wins (mostly)

If he isn't controllable by the Haslams will he get shot?

We're in the worst shape in program history, and Tee has never run a program. I'd love to see him come here and full circle us to an NC. But he needs to grow and we need to stabilize. Yes, he could come here and succeed. But it would be a steep learning curve and UT isn't a patient fanbase. Not now. Not after the last decade.

He wants a job and no one else will give him one so I believe he is controllable and affordable. It is the one mystery to CFB I don't understand. Guys like Fulmer would have killed it at another school. Like Cut has at Duke, but once you fall from Grace at a certain age no one will hire you. Snyder is a similar example.

The guys we will miss most are the ones toting luggage. They spend tons quietlty and do it for the thoughts of being part of a winning tradition. Lose them and you lose recruiting. Lose recruiting and you are toast.

It would be the most Tennessee thing ever to sign Gruden to some agreement that requires us to pay him, but he actually never coaches for Tennessee

Therefore... I’m trotting out this rumor

Did not happen. I would bet anything on it. my left nut, my heart, all my money. whatever.

I bought into the Gruden stuff too, but this is absolutely ridiculous.

shut it down, my gosh.

We were all told we would spend it with this hire. There is not a single source that said otherwise. That and that alone got us believing in a laundry list of good to great candidates.

Except the most eggregious misdirection wasn't Gruden it was that we were not going to spend big. AV is not pissed about not hiring Gruden he is pissed we weren't putting money towards a legit top tier coach. That trickles down to large and small donors alike.

Now the solution is still money. Either they get this hire reasonably right or their will be financial repercussions.

This became a big misunderstanding fueled by Grumors. When Currie said money was no object, he meant that money wouldn't be an obstacle to getting who we really wanted.. He said UT would pay what it took to land a top hire, but would look to pay market value otherwise. We didn't get a top candidate. We didn't offer any of them because there wasn't mutual interest. We didn't offer top dollar to Schiano because he wasn't a top tier candidate.

That whole "big, explosive and expensive" comment was ill-advised. It wasn't smart to create that expectation without knowing he could get a top guy.

I don't believe he talked seriously with anyone else.

Doug Gottlieb is one of the worst sports reporters in the business. Listened to Clay Travis on his show, and Doug basically yelled the entire time. It’s funny that he bashed UT in that exchange, but also retweeted the Cowherd segment where he and his cohost agreed that the AD flubbed up. I’ve never liked Gottlieb. There’s a reason he was booted from ESPN, then to CBS, then to Fox. He was turned down by OkSt for the head b-ball gig and has been a salty gnome since. BTW, Doug still believes Tony Romo could be relevant in the NFL.

I love the fact that he acts like he's the moral authority in sports. He thinks we all forgot about his felony theft charges at Notre Dame I guess.

I’m just a red neck snake hunter who can’t find a cobra when he needs one

Seriously tho if u would have just killed that SOB like we asked you to, none of this would be happening right now, when was that? Like 3 , 4 years ago?

Mike Griffith said it best today. Everyone has a price. Big targets would be interested at the right price. However, if all we do is call them up and ask them if they want to coach at UT, be prepared to be told no. If you don't take no for an answer you can determine the right candidates price. I guarantee I could be talked into becoming a prostitute tomorrow if the money were right.

So what experienced, winning coach with big program experience do you think is willing to come here to rebuild this program in the shape it's in, in the current environment? For not a lot of money and minimal buyout. Because UT's not likely to break the bank for lower tier guys.

Miles. Let's go I'll drive.

It was 2015. For P-Willy... that’s the one I couldn’t get. We see how that went.

Later killed a different cobra a few weeks later, and finished 2015 strong

When their agents shut you down and top-tier candidates won't take an interview, then you either push harder or move on. Doesn't seem like Currie pushed hard, so perhaps he thought Schiano was the best bargain all along. I can't imagine why anyone at UT thought Schiano was a good fit, but it sends a clear signal about the state of the program and its leadership.

He definitely didn’t push hard, just looking at the guy u can tell he has no Ernest Hemingway in him. He creeps me out personally, that grin at the press conference made me feel like I do sometimes when I’m playing poker and you are just sure the guy is fos
