I said a long time ago I wanted Bajakian gone, but I always wondered if it would even matter because Butch is gonna keep doing the same stuff. This DeBord stuff confirms it. He shouldn't really even be someone we're considering. All the problems I had with the offense will remain the same because it was Butch, not Jake.

This is a chance for us to really take a step forward. Is this really the best we can do?

If this is the hire, it generates no excitement, and actual disappointment, though I have no clue what I am talking about.

I will give the benefit of the doubt and hope for the best. He is experienced

Personally I have a hard time believing this guy will be the hire. I doubt Butch will hire the very first guy he interviews. This is a huge chance to advance this offense forward and there's nothing about Debord that say he will be the guy to get us there.

Eggs actly

If he does hire DeBord it would be such a troll to the fans after dropping the "I'm humbled by the amount of calls" comment. To say that and then hire the very first guy you interview...lol

Especially since dozens apparently contacted the AD about the vacancy

Serious question. Does it really matter if Butch goes out and hires some young hot shot OC if he is going to bring him in and force him to learn and run his system and way of doing things? I just don't see it. Someone tossed it out there that CBJ and CMB butted heads on which QBs to sign. If it's Butchs way or the highway IMO the whole concern with who is calling Butch's plays is a lot of worry for nothing.

Actually I saw a post yesterday in one of the coaching search threads that quoted Hubbs (IIRC) mentioning that Butch is supposedly very hands off about the offence. I dunno if Hubbs (or whoever) actually said it or it was just BS though.

I was wondering this. Even if it is Butch's offense, he doesn't call the plays. Even if someone shares a similar philosophy, play-calling is half the battle (probably more). I just won't immediately think we get the same play calling until I see a sample size.

You can't honestly say this hire moves the needle for you in a way that doesn't involve a head scratch and "Well, I hope it works out."

I am going to be really honest. When Butch Jones was hired, I scratched my head. I am serious. Couldn't believe we couldn't hire a bigger name. Has worked out so far.

Kinda like the hiring of Butch and his entire staff did the same to the board. "Hart going on the cheap". It all worked out fine. IMO this will as well. Butch screws it up, its his job on the line.

Waking up today, I feel a little better about the hire if it is indeed DeBord.

I think we need to just realize that Butch Jones is going to sink or swim running the "Butch Jones offense" and everything about the program is going to be run his way.

I can see Jones bringing in DeBord to call essentially the same plays as Bajakian, but also to have someone on staff who is a great OL coach and who can serve as a mentor-figure for himself and the younger guys on staff.

Plus, he may be considering DeBord, who has head coaching/admin experience, to have someone he trusts implicitly on campus while he and his staff go out and recruit. I really think Butch loves recruiting and wants to be the best, and having DeBord hold down the fort while he's gone would only free him up to make it an even bigger priority.

Again, just conspiracy theories on my part.

Looking at it from this perspective, it may a better overall hire than just bringing in some young guy whose only "known" value to Butch is that he put up big numbers a couple years in an offense that may or may not be similar to Tennessee's.

But I don't believe he actually calls the plays. He may provide input on run or pass but doesn't call the play. Big difference.

CMB ran Butch Jones offense. I don't see a problem if he hires a man who can run his offense like he wants it run. If UT had huge issues on offense the New guy coming in and what he runs would matter. That's just not the case here IMO.

CBJ coordinated CMU's offense while DeBord was head coach there. I have no idea what that offensive scheme was like over 10 years ago or actually how much of it was CBJ or DeBord. One would think CBJ would look for someone who is running a scheme very similar to what he is running right now.
