What does Debord have to do with Allen and Richmond? I don't get how he is the key to them. Does he know them somehow? I get he is a oline guy but they Prob don't know who the heck this old guy is

It's been mentioned Sheridan may be ready to step up there.

If our new OC doesn't have any experience coaching QBs then Sheridan would do just fine. Would they leave him as a GA to do so or would the create a full-time spot. A full-time spot for Sheridan means we would have to eliminate one.

There is no way a staff member is losing their job

There's better OCs out there.

I'm sure there are.

Who?

And after you answer that, please also answer these:

Do they have interest in the job?
Do they have experience in a "power" spread system?
Would their current job allow them to leave without matching the money?
Does their family want to move to Knoxville, TN?
Would their personality mesh with our current staff?
Are they trustworthy and reliable?
Are they willing to put in long hours and other requirements Butch Jones demands in recruiting?
Would they want to bring in their own offensive assistants?

I don't know who Butch is going to hire. But we don't know who the willing options are either.

The only way this works out if Butch hires this DeDinosaur is promoting Azzani to Co- OC. What kid would be excited to play under this guy who's been out of coaching for years? So much more talented OC's out there. Really hope Butch makes the right decision. Because this offense is ready to thrive next season...

That doesn't make any sense to me either. Maybe just folks trying to attach a silver lining to the hire. CBJ hires this guy they get Richmond and Allen. Yet if you read the board people were saying they were 50-50 VOLS before CMB even left.

I agree. I don't see many kids being excited to play for Mike Debord esp if they are a kid who can go anywhere else in the nation.

Then we would be without a QB coach after Sheridan's stint as a GA is up. Wouldn't that be after next season? Plus, look at how the RBs did the year Dooley tried to have a GA coach them...not to mention the fact we would have 2 OL coaches essentially.

Leonard Little doesn't even know who he is according to twitter.

It's a puzzlement if it is true he is not a quarterback coach and his experience is a pro style offense considering that Butch made a statement where he wanted the exact opposite in his hire.

I'm not concerned at all about age or image. Let me tell you, if the Vols start averaging over 35 ppg, that will get them excited.

A. Score points
B. Make it fun to watch
C. Recruit well
D. Obtain swagger

Order of importance

B & C order is due to quality recruits all ready on staff. You may disagree

I would bet had you mentioned CMB name 3 years ago ALOT of the board would have said kids TN needs to turn the program around would not wanna play for him. I think the head coach is much more the factor when it comes to kids putting pen to paper. JMO

Considering Bajakian didn't exactly set the world on fire recruiting, not sure what your point is here; recruits mostly care about their position coaches IMO. Recruiting is not why this hire would disappoint me. I mean, the guy doesn't even run the same kind of system Butch likes.

If Butch hires the man, obviously he thinks he will fit in just fine.

Another theory: Butch is actually a much better offensive mind (or at least is convinced he is) than any of us give him credit for and is bringing in DeBord to run the exact offense he wants.

Hubbs stated that Butch was fairly hands off with Bajakian calling the plays, but he's not blind. He saw the struggles against UF, Ole Miss, Mizzou, Vandy, etc.

Maybe this is just a move by Butch to gain more control over the offense, while also bringing in a guy who has good qualities of his own (head coaching experience, decades of overall football experience, familiarity with Butch and his system, etc).

I'm really hoping it isn't DeBord, but I don't think the system thing really matters. Jim Chaney has coached just about every type of offensive system in existence. Paul Johnson ran a different offense while OC at Hawaii.

LWS said on Volquest that Debord was big in terms of getting Allen and Richmond. I'm assuming that is the same LWS as here.

What possible chance is this true? I doubt Allen and Richmond have ever heard of DeBord before this past week and now he's the key to getting them to commit. Just not seeing it and I know LWS is pretty much spot on.

Such a bad move to have a GA as your only QB coach. Good luck recruiting QBs. Oh hey coach who is my position coach? Oh a GA with only one year left? So what about when I'm actually on campus? Oh your going to hire one then so who you going to let go to bring on another coach?

Such a bad move for recruiting at a critical position

You can't make a hire just to please two recruits. Just like you can't just promote Azzani to keep PW happy. The future of the program is bigger than a couple of recruits in one class.

No, but you can make a hire and one of the attributes he possesses is that he is a coach that stud OL want to play for

I thought about that a little as well. What if Butch hires this guy then announces he will be calling plays himself? Maybe DeBorg gets the OC title and more helps with the OL. Sheridan steps up to coach QBs and we'll see where we are in a year.

I agree on scoring a ton of points and remaining swagger. It's just the hire? He's been out of coaching for so long that I don't get it. I know this is Butch's offense, but we all saw how insanely predictable our offense ran last year. The announcer at the Gator Bowl was calling our plays everytime we lined up. And this lame duck coach comes in with nothing fresh and runs the predictable offense. So Azzani has to bring new ideas or get a talented OC that will work and mesh with Butch to bring new ideas to the offense that can play to the strengths we have.

I'm judging quickly if it happens and should give him a chance, but this is a huge opportunity for Butch to put a new stamp on his offense to really shine. With this much talent, we can't have a "well that didn't work out", let's get another OC. That disrupts the whole process Butch is putting together. And coaches don't have time to succeed like they did in the old days...
