He's never coached QB. OL is the only position I can see him taking over, of he's just going to be a position coach.

I was referring to looking at the UTC OC as a possible QB coach, not DeBord.

And to think, should Coach Z leave, we'll get to relive all this fun as we search for a new WR coach.

My guess on the first name VN brings up should Coach Z leave...George Quarles.

Would be my 1st call given the chance.

Anytime any position opens up on the UT staff, his name gets thrown out there. I know he's been successful at Maryville, but I don't follow HS football, so I know nothing about him. But many VN posters seem to love him.

So your contention is the entire treasury was squandered basically in the Fulmer through Dooley fiasco...even though you contend they've been cheap since the beginning of time?

How can Bama and OSU afford their hires? Multiple reasons I doubt you're willing to listen to. But I'd contend the main reason is because their administrations entered the 21st century well before UT did.

Since you're so simple minded, I'll splain it for you. We are in this shape because our performance sucked and fan participation dwindled as did donations. Thus vastly dimished revenue to the AD. Couple that with huge buyouts and the situation you find the UT AD in is what you get.

The reason Bama and other schools can afford to pay top flight coaches is because they have fan bases that throw money at them because of their success. Now I realize that you have far superior intellect than I so I'm sure I'm just stoopid To you but that's just fine by me.

If you're looking to go the HS route and give a guy a shot, IMO few resumes would look better than Quarles. Add to it his recruiting ability instate and he would be a great hire IMO. WR coach, yeah. OC IMO, no.

You guys freak out what too much. Period. Just like when butch was hired. "Oh my god. What will the recruits think"

Hummmmmmmmm

I said Butch was a great hire at 2.5 mil or so long before he was hired. I said Butch over Charlie. I said TN recruits itself if the guy is willing to at least try. Dave Hart is a pretty smart guy.

But can he coach WRs? The last WR I remember UT taking from Maryville HS was Tyler Maples. That didn't work out so well. A position coach should actually be able to coach the position he's hired for. I'm not bashing the guy, but a hire should make sense beyond simple recruiting.

Wonderful response.

And for those who kept insisiting opposition to DeBord was about his age, it had nothing to do with his age. Take away the fact he's been out of coaching for a year, go ahead and throw out he hasn't served as an OC in several years, and you'll finally get to the crux of the arguement. His position coaching resume screams "If I get the job the offensive staff is looking at even more major shake ups less than two weeks til NSD!" I don't really fear any of our D commits being influenced by this, but how will our O commits react? How well liked was Mahoney by our commits, and by the kids we're still chasing? Allen talked about going to the movies with him. Said he had a good relationship with him. Did we just close the door on one of our LT possibilities?

And no, this is not a freak out. Chips are gonna fall where they will. But there's more to the hire than some are giving credit to. It wasn't long ago we were enjoying the instability of UGA's offense, now were this close to NSD and our own offensive staff is facing the same kind of instability. I'm not gonna panic, but let's see reality for what it is.

DeBord just does not make a lot of sense.

LWS posted that Debord would be a big key in landing Richmond and Allen. How I'm not sure, but I saw it quoted where he posted it on VQ.

Winning at the clip he wins tells me he can coach it all pretty well.

"I think the hire will come as soon as Jones is convinced he has the right person but also covers his bases in terms of speaking with a couple of other candidates.

Absolutely, Mike DeBord is far and away with leading candidate --- and Tennessee has been checking sources on DeBord but also vetting multiple other candidates.

DeBord remains on campus and has met extensively with Jones and his entire staff this weekend, as well as other people on campus. He's also, we've heard, logged some time with some Vols' players including Josh Dobbs.

We have spoken to multiple members in the UTC athletics department and multiple members in the UT athletics department who do not confirm anything going on with Durden. "No, that's just not true at all."

I think in speaking with Butch he has a strong relationship with Zach and wants to see him succeed and grow his career but also would love to keep Z here. I do know from folks on campus that something along the lines of "passing game coordinator" and perhaps an increase in pay have been discussed.

However, I'm point-blank told by people connected to the CMU search that they were telling folks, "We want a Butch Jones guy." Obviously that could be Azzanni or even John Jancek, since they could not sway Mike Bajakian from the NFL.

I think like a lot of people when I first heard Mike DeBord's name on Wednesday night, I knew that was someone nearly hired at UT in Fulmer's last year but didn't know much since then.

Having worked the phones now for several days, the guy has a pretty strong reputation. This is not a case where CBJ had his mind made up and wouldn't listen to outside people or isn't talking to other candidates. He's doing both.

But I expect if/when DeBord is the guy, and CBJ formally introduces him, the list of references is going to be pretty darn strong."

While I can't see how the hire would directly help at all with those 2 specific recruits, I don't think it would hurt a bit if UT knew both were already in the bag and attached their names to DeBorg to aid in the BOOM of the hire. Jmo
