I've flown/driven through but haven't had a chance to stay yet. Wife and I planned two trips there that both fell through, unfortunately.

We plan on making a Charleston and Savannah trip for our anniversary next year...hopefully. I've been to Savannah, she hasn't. LOVED Savannah.

By far, the best shrimp and grits I've ever had was at The Boar's Head on the river front in Savannah.

I like food.

Now I'm hungry.

Boar's Head in PCB is great. Not sure if it's same or not.

Retire to Charleston, SC. It has the best city life and outdoor activity balance I've found anywhere...which is why I decided to live here.

+1. In west TN, the Florida panhandle and gulf vacations are very popular because of location. But, my in-laws have a place on the Isle of Palms, and I love visiting. We go almost every year but won't make it this year because of a family wedding in Miami.

Charleston is a great mix of history, food, beach, and golf.

I'm guessing his old man has to tag along? :)

No sideways pics this year. I have 2 batteries for the phone so it will be a good day.

Early session with Wilhoit in the indoor facility then moving outside to Neyland (after they listen to Butch speak).

He wants to win his division bad this year. There were some incredible kickers there last year so we will see where he's at.

Well, me having an avatar helps ME identify my posts, but I often wonder/worry if y'all other posters get us mixed up and think I posted something I didn't. Because there are some things I won't post.

I just figured out how to get an avatar today.
Female avatar = vosams
Forming the "T" avatar = volssam

EDIT: on your last sentence. Explain?

vosams and volssam, do y'all ever see each other's usernames as you're scrolling through a thread and think "I don't remember posting that...."

Lol not to often. When I first started on VN, I did.

For faith reasons, I don't post anything with cursing or things that have promotion of sex/promiscuity and such. Even if I quote something with cursing, I edit the quoted post to remove the cursing. Stuff like that.

Ain't nothing wrong with having a small cadre of Jersey Boys. I've actually had good times with lots of people from Jersey -- shame they get stereotyped almost as badly as we do. They're often very good people.

Misplaced state.Should have been a southern state.Jersey has some fun loving good old boys.Played ball with several of them in college

Are you in the city proper? I'd LOOOOVE to live there but I think it would be cost prohibitive to find a good living space in Charleston. I have a cousin who lives in Summerville which is just a spit away from the city proper and she and her entire family love it there.

Although, I've been to Charleston several times since and had already been there once before when I was even younger, I can still remember a field trip there (I think it might've been a Jr. Beta Club trip but I'm not sure). I was blown away by the old buildings, loved what they'd done with fountains/land that had been reclaimed, cleaned up, and turned into something awesome people could use, and the Spoleto Festival just that happened to be going on, although we hadn't planned for that (turned out to be a real treat to experience some of it). The whole city seemed to be into it so it gave off a very cool vibe to be there at that time.

A lot of other sights stand out too but this would be a loong post.

I fell in love with the city on that trip as it was the first time I was old enough to really appreciate it. Every time I've been there it's been great but that trip was the one and I haven't looked back since.

My parents love Charleston. They go there at least twice a year to visit. Our favorite place to eat at is Poogan's Porch. Anybody else eaten there?

In a lot of ways, it really is. Jersey peeps and even a lot of NYC peeps are far more like us than folks realize. I know NYC sounds pretty shocking but I'm talking native New Yorkers as many of them are like us in that they have the tendency to talk and want to get to know any stranger they meet. They are as outgoing and talkative as we are. And share with the outgoing and chattiness that other regions find off-putting. And like us, they're the opposite of reserved, although they're language can be far more blunt than ours (LOL).

That aspect, of course varies from people to people and from neighborhood to neighborhood and borough to borough and cabbies are still rude as are certain people in the city but tons of New Yorkers have a ton more in common with us than they do with the rest of the North, Midwest, or California (those are all places far more reserved than either of us and look at you as though you have a third head and wonder 'what you want from them' when we're just being polite and friendly). A lot of Upstate New Yorkers are the same or even more like us (lots of rural life up there).

Blew me the hell away.

ETA: Forgive the typos. Everytime I edit and see it as a post I see something I've missed. One of those days for me. Dyslexia acting up due to migraine, FTW!

Charleston is a great mix of history, food, beach, and golf.

You pretty much hit it on the head here.

The cuisine is really getting out of control here right now, there are 4 and 5 star restaurants popping up everywhere and chefs from NY, Chicago, LA and Vegas are moving in.

The history is underrated by a lot too I think, there is tons of history outside of downtown as well that you don't realize that is there like Fort Moultrie on Sullivan's, Patriot's Pointe or Fort Johnson.

I do wish we had the white sands of the gulf, but the easy accesability and overall city overcomes that in terms of living here.

Golf when you add in Kiawah is top notch as you said.

One other thing that I really like is that Charleston is still the true South. It isn't like a lot of Florida and that it feels like you are compeletly surrounded by transplanted Yankees. Church and southern traditions are still in place here and makes it feel like home.

It is big enough but not huge.

It is the best! Hense why it keeps being named #1 desitination in North America every year by Conde Nast and Travel and Lesuire the past 3 years and all the way up to #2 in the world.

I live in Mount Pleasant, which is right over the Ravenel bridge from Downtown. It is pricey but worth it, the schools are fantastic and we are 15 minutes from DT and 10 minutes to both IOP and Sullivans.

Real Estate is getting crazy, I would say I live in what would be considered "kind of far out" Mount Pleasant and a house in our neighborhood that was built in the mid 90's and is only 1500 sq ft just went North of 300K.

Poogan's is good, I like it for Lunch.

But I'll be honest in saying it is middle of the pack at best, there are some really top notch places that have opened in the past few years.

If you ever want some new recs for you or your parents let me know.

Just googled Mount Pleasant and it looks like it's pretty much the same distance as Summerville and little bit more upscale but at the same time you've got more in town. Love the inlets and such y'all have got. I've got a thing for inlets for some reason -- I love to sit at restaurants that are on them and just stare out at them.

Question since I haven't been out your way in a while: Is there decent parking for those trekking into the city?

Yeah, go ahead and hook me up with some names. I will throw them my parents way. Thanks for the information :hi:

From my experience with New Yorkers they're outgoing like southerners but there's a harshness to them that southerners don't have. If someone in the south snaps at you you're usually about 3 seconds from a fist fight. If a New Yorker does it they don't mean anything by it. Once I got used to this I kind of liked it. You never have to wonder what they're thinking.
